I say Copperhead, I just caught a northern watersnake and it did not look like that one ( and yes I am positive it was a water snake ). My dad killed it though before I got a say in it (it was gonna be my pet), and coming from a climate that is absolutly full of snakes of all kinds, I know them fairly well. Anyway be carful out there and wear those snake boots, it could save your life.

Copperheads and rattlesnakes and the only snakes we kill....black snakes, water snakes, black racers all provide numerous benefits IMO

What you have there is your common Northern Water Snake, harmless as can be. Being from Florida, Ive handled many snakes, many snakes I should not have handled. There are some Copperheads that look similar to a Northern Water Snake, but yours is deffinately a watersnake, not a Copperhead.

I'm unsure of whatkind of snake it is, I fish year around and every northern I've run into is more orangish than brown here in southern wv...that is why i first thought it was a copperhead. the head was too badly damaged to tell the shape. I found the snake in the road also...who knows? I didn't kill it anyways, I also believe snakes have a purpose.
this is what a nothern water snake looks like to me..I see hundreds of them on the New River.
