"Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
Alright, a shooter buck means something different to pretty much everybody for lots of different reasons... My question is what do you personally consider a "shooter" buck? To me and the places that I hunt a deer that I field judge very near P&Y is a shooter to me. I know that when one of my buddies refers to a shooter, he (or she) is talking about a deer in that will go at least in the mid 120's. I was just curious to others' thoughts.

RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
either a buck that will go above 150 unless he is 3.5 years old or any genetically inferior 4.5 or older buck
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
I hunt public property... If its an 8 point.. Its a shooter
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
my goal is 130" and up.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
Inside spread past ear width
8pt minimum, though 10pt ideal 140"+ min, 150"+ better 3.5yo ideal min. age may consider taking a"management buck" this year |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
![]() Shooters for me around my place will gross in the 130's like the girls are holding, but you better be ready to eat tag soup waiting for one. I have shot 3 in 11 seasons and thats 2 more than anyone else I know of around here. Now any thing with 6 or more points on its head and nice full hind quarters is dead meat around my Wife. |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
Nice mounts and great grandkids, Sliver.
A shooter buck to me is what ever I like at the time. Usually I try for something pretty decent, 140+. |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
Thanks Greg, they come to Pa Pas house and play with deer horns (I tell them they are antlers, but they call them horns) and Bear skulls.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
4.5 year old or older
4pt = 135 plus 5pt = 145 plus Last day of season - diminutive spikeand bigger. :D Tim p.s. This is before factoring in ground shrinkage. [&:] |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
With all the doe tags I am allowed meat is no problem.
So as of right now mostly 130's or higher. Silver nice room pal, most of those kills in Northern, MI? Damn good if they are due to tough hunting up there. |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
The private land we own is terrible for growing big deer and the public land is way over hunted so anything bigger than what we call a "basket rack" is a trophy in my area.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
its brown its down
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
A shooter for me is a mature deer for the area, I like to target 3.5 year olds and older regardless of what they carry on their head
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
Im still fairly new to this sport, but if its 3.5+ it will be down. I have been known to slip though...[:@]
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
Due to my current situation ...... not a ton of deer and only two doe allowed....... it depends on how full my freezer is ....
See my sig |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
A shooter buck would be a buck that I want to shoot.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
A harvestable deer on our property is usually at least an 8 and never under the age of 2.5 years old. Where we live bucks rarely get to 4.5-5.5 years old so we're not to the point yet of harvesting geneteically inferior deer. We also try to make an effort in doe harvests to harvest does out a wide array of age classes in order to keep the age structure balacned.
A shooter buck would be a buck that I want to shoot. |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
I have started trying to let anything under 3.5 walk. Sometimes it is hard to do that when you hunt public land, but if I don't pass him up there is now way he will get older.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
Antlers take up too much space in the freezer. Nuff said.
Seriously, with the hunting pressure around here, if I see an eight point, it is a great day. That is my goal. |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
p.s. This is before factoring in ground shrinkage. [&:] |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
For me its gotta be 130" and up.
|

Silver nice room pal, most of those kills in Northern, MI? Damn good if they are due to tough hunting up there. She has another good one at the taxidermist right now we need to go pick up. The one in the center back wall is from Kentucky, and the ones you can see on the left are from Kansas. |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
For me anything in the 130 range will open season but i wont hesitate to shoot something unique that may score less.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
I've been pretty lucky the last handfull of years to have gotten a few deer (Bucks & Does)...
This year I am looking for a 3.5 year or older buck that would fall in the 120"+ range. However, my doe tag will probably get filled before this happens, this way I'll have more patience with my goal.;) Another thing I'll consider is if it's getting closer to muzzle/rifle season, as we all know, this brings out the additional pressure and might make me think about taking anything over a basket 6 pointer before the war zone starts??? Depends on my sighting as well! |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
3.5 and 120" +
Preferably closer to 130", but I'll give myself 10" of ground shrinkage. ;) |
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
Im still pretty new at this game so I dont have as high of ambitions as soem of you guys.
I have a goal to kill a buck over 100" with my bow next fall. That may not seem like a big deal to alot of you guys but i would be thrilled:D |

I've set my standards a little high for this year after finding a set of sheds scoring around 156, so he's my shooter buck for this year. But normally, 140+ is my standard. Which I have yet to kill yet.

RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
I get a bunch of tags for Does so When it comes to Buck time I usually wait for a big one, Bear in mind big to me is 8 points or more (no inches here) I am just not patient enough to wait for the Big Papa to come strolling through I get to excited.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
8 point that I feel like shooting. I can't sit here and say I won't shoot a buck unless he's got X inches of horn on his head. If he's an 8 point, and I decide I want that one.....I'm shooting him. Period.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
#.5 and older bucks are the deer that I'am after.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
In PA with my longbow I would like a simple 2.5yr old or better standards are subject to change with my mood and how I feel. Definitely not trophy hunting here in PA, I like the simple feel of just deer hunting.........in IL a 3.5yr old or better has been the goal.

RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
BREATHING. As long as he comes by breathing he's got a good chance of being shot at.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
on our illinois trip every yr. 140" on our lease in georgia 120" 125" is probably getting an arrow shot at it.

RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
I have never attempted to label ###" of antler. Hopefully, we all shoot exactly what we feel like shooting. I have passed up deer I otherwise would have taken, simply because it was early in the season and I did not want to stop hunting yet. It is the hunting that does it for me.
|
RE: "Shooter" bucks... what does it mean to you?
I plan on holding out for something 130" plus. But if it is a unique rack or some freak I'll adjust on the fly.
