United States Air Force '88-'92 Desert Storm Vet
37th Tactical Fighter Wing, 35th AGS, 561st AMU (Wild Weasels) and later 20th Training Squadron AMU
I was a Hydraulics/pneumatics mechanic on F-4 E and G model fighter/bombers. I was later cross trained into Crew chief and Jet Engine mechanic when the rolled all three jobs into one (rivet workforce)
Then at the end of my enlistment I was on a special transfer team that worked directly under the commander of maintenance for our wing. Our job was to do flyable storage and ready aircraft for sale or decommission as the base was closing down and the F-4's were phased out.
The F-4 wild weasels played a large roll in the Vietnam war and the 561st was one of the first military groups to go to Desert Shield/Storm. The main mission was to locate and take out Surface to Air sites, They also targeted mobile SCUD launchers. A lot of the pilots I got to work with had considerable rank and were Vietnam combat veterans with combat experience and confirmed kills. Very cool guys to talk to. Not like the young know it all pilots.
