Please be careful
How in the hell this happens is beyond me ,but here in PA it happens all to often. Every year people are shot after being mistaken for turkeys. This mans life is in ruins over a very foolish moment of carelessness.
BELLE PLAINE, Minn.— The Sibley County Sheriff says that a man who accidentally shot and killed his 9-year-old son while they were hunting apparently mistook the boy for a turkey.[/b] Sheriff Bruce Ponath says that Anthony Klaseus of Belle Plaine and his son Hunter were hunting turkey about three miles west of Belle Plaine around 6:30 p.m. Saturday when Klaseus shot his son in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun. Klaseus dialed 911 on his cell phone. Emergency responders pronounced the boy dead at the scene. "He was absolutely panicked. That would be an understatement," Ponath said. "Very distraught." Ponath said the shooting was an accident but that his department is continuing to investigate the circumstances. |
RE: Please becarful
I'm gonna ask the very obvious question.........
Why in the hell is a 9yr old boy even far enough away from his fathers direct supervision to be "accidentally" shot?[:@] |
RE: Please becarful
Did you notice the time?

RE: Please becarful
When I was young I shot over a rabbit and didnt see my dog i hit her with some pellets she lived till she was 15 but I learned very important lesson about how that thing in your hands can take life in a split second. That is so very sad how must the father feel my god.

RE: Please becarful
Iwork with a guy who was shot in the shoulder and side of his head15 years ago. He lost one eye and still has 27 pellets in his head. He says it felt like a 2 X 10 hit up alongside his head when he got shot.
He speaks at hunter safety classes and really gets the kids attention, when he shows them the x-ray with the pellets on it. And then he takes out his glass eye, just for the added effect of shock. I do not understand how anyone can ever make that mistake. What in the hell are they looking at???? ![]() |
RE: Please becarful
Too many bad ingredients in that recipe. I agree with Matt/PA.
What a shame. |
RE: Please becarful
I am speechless, sorry.

RE: Please becarful
How does one mistake a person for a turkey?!?!?! Are they wearing turkey outfits? I don't get it!! And if you are leaving your partner tell him![&:][:@][:@][:@]
|
RE: Please becarful
I just dont understand. Thats all I am going to say about this.[:@]
|
RE: Please becarful
It simply dont make sence how or why this should ever happen. I know that it was an accident but theres only one person to blame here....
|
RE: Please becarful
Confuses a camoflauged person for a turkey? Oh lord, poor boy, poor dad, poor family.
|
RE: Please becarful
One of 2 people trespassing on my leased land turned out to have shot a guy in the bushes when he was 15. It was on his record when the game warden ran his info. I told the game warden that if he returns to my land im pressing charges. Its a shame that people shoot without knowing what they are shooting at!
|
RE: Please becarful
You mistake your kid for a turkey...maybe he should have never been hunting, I know 100% for sure what I am shooting at, and I am sure that everyone here does also...besides what is your kid doing downrange anyway.
|
RE: Please becarful
I never understood how these things happen either. Just don't get it.
I was hunting public land the other day and was almost too scared to pull my decoys out the bag.:( Hell, I was afraid of getting out the truck. |

Its very bright yet at that time. Its not dark till after 8pm here in WI and MN, Wisconsins Turkey closes before 8 (at least for the 3rd season). I think its a half hour before sunset. Or right at roost, which ever comes first.

RE: Please becarful
When it is to dark to count points see beard you should be in your truck unless your waiting for it to get light
|
RE: Please becarful
I can see to shoot a turkey here after 8:00.
|
RE: Please becarful
Guys this is horrible, and we wonder why hunters get a bad rap? I know a boy who was shot by another hunter with a BOW!!!!!!! How in the world do you mistakenly shoot another person with a bow. He was walking out just after dark and caught an arrow in the leg. Still to this day has a limp. Some people should not be allowed to reproduce....Matt

RE: Please becarful
Such a shame here in Wv spring turkey season you must be out of the woods around noon plus who would let a child that young be far enough away from them to mistake them for a bird. Just plain stupid.

RE: Please becarful
I would about bet the father was either drunk or something else is off. I know there is no way I could ever mistake a person for a turkey especially not in shotgun range.
|
RE: Please becarful
PA is like NY regarding spring turkey. Only until noon and bearded birds only. I hate to kick a man when he is down, but there is ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE for this "accident".
|
RE: Please becarful
It would make no difference in this case ,but if you pull into a place to hunt and there is already a truck there,go else where ,or at least leave a note to what side of the road your hunting. the popularity of turkey hunting is making it more dangerous every year.
I posted this so maybe just maybe every one takes that little extra time to be safe. |
RE: Please becarful
How about we just don't shoot any 100+ pound turkeys we see walking around out there? It just doesn't make sense.
|
RE: Please becarful
What a crying shame. I have no idea how this could happen, but it is an absolute tragedy. There is no use in pointing fingers because the deed is doneand many lives areruined in this case. We have to learn what we can from this poor man's errors.
There is no limit to how safe you should be in the woods, so everyone PLEASE BE CAREFUL OUT THERE. |
RE: Please becarful
I live about a half hour from where this happened. Very sad indeed. The thing that i don't understand is, in the MN spring turkey hunt you can only shoot toms or jakes. How can this guy be that stupid to shoot something he can't identify. Sounds like he didn't care what the rules were he was just going to shoot whatever moves. Makes me sick!!

without beating the father anymore all I can say is as a father my heart hurts reading about this
|
RE: Please becarful
A tradgedy for sure, I can't even imagine.
|
RE: Please becarful
I feel sorry for the boy and his mother, as for the father my thoughts mirror Matts.
What ever happened to Know your Target and Beyond I just dont see how anyone can mistake a person for a turkey or deer. Too many people shoot at a sound without knowing what made the sound. |
RE: Please becarful
Man that sucks for the mother and son. The father will have to live with this forever, it has already killed him, he just does not know it:(.
As for "How it can Happen" think abut this, 75% of car seats for infants are installed wrong, it takes 5 mins to get it in correctly. Parents can not take 5 mins to get it right. In a nut shell as a society we have become lazy and stupid[&:] |

RE: Please becarful
agreed, this is all about knowing what you're doing! sorry but shooting a dog, a person, a house, a car, isn't acceptable.
agreed, 9yo shouldn't be hunting alone, with a gun? away from his dad? a rule I seem to recall, maybe others do not....."don't shoot at something unless you're certain of what it is, and what's behind it or in the way" just plain ridiculous! Maybe people who have "accidents" should have their rights restricted..... Accidents do occurr, but we need to limit them, or at least try to, and educate people on how to, I remeber not shooting a pheasant more than once, because of how low he was flying, and either a dog or person was in the way, also swinga gun to follow a bird.....people need to develop their eyesight....ie know whats around them and aware of these things, like hey if this bird gets up and flies left, Bob's over there, so be careful however I worry this will fall on deaf ears and these people who cause "accidents" will continue to exist, I worry about one of them around me.....I sure hope I never cause one, but as much as I worry about me, I worry about the guy near me, or off in the distance.... Quick story, 2 years ago antelope hunting, rifle, 2 guys went over a ridge, both were hunters hunting antelope like us, however no blaze orange, then antelope appear between us and the other hunters, on a ridge......passed up the shot, and in this scenario I feel those guys could have been shot accidentaly but their own fault, reason we have blaze orange I feel is for that long range shot when you can't see a guy in camo behind the game you plan to shoot, |
RE: Please be careful
Sorry for the cliche', but we all have to purchase a license in order to go afield, but no one needs a license to have children. My prayers go out to a family that lost a young life. As for the father, he'll live with his decision to pull that trigger.
|
RE: Please be careful
Very sad story. I feel bad for him and all who knew him and loved him. I also feel bad for the father because he'll have to live with that every minute of every day. Can't imagine it! This being said, he must have been high on something to make that kind of "mistake" at such close range!
