Hunting the illusive whitetail buck!

When do you all prefer to hunt your bucks? I myself prefer hunting these guys from the 3rd week of October to the 2nd week of November, thats been my best luck anyway. I'm not anywhere near the bedding areas or the deeper, heavier part of the woods of these bucks until the dates I mentioned. If I'm meat hunting (doe or doe fawns) I'll stay close to the edge of the woods if not on the edge of a field. The poll is multiple selections being I'm sure some hunt everything.

Schultzy Ilike the last week of October thru the end of our bow season which is the the middle of November. I've tried earlier in the season to no avail and I personally don't like the heat and the still green woods. Ken

Opening weekend that last few years has presented numerous opportunities at those elusive bigger deer in my area, especially once you get them semi-figured out where they will be feeding in the evenings.

That being said, I still like the first week or two in November, rut should be going full bore, and that is the time you have a good chance of seeing different (mayber bigger) bucks.

I don't know if I have ever seen a illusive buck though, they do tricks like David Copperfield or something?????? :D:D:D

ya, had to edit it, cause if am gonna get smart about speeling i better get my wurds spelt rite also, yanno........;)

Because I hunt highly pressured animals I live and die by the first 5 days of the season.

yup, meat hunt early, get a doe or two in the freezer. I'll usually only hunt afternoons early, but after halloween I'll get out whenever I can. That said, I won't pass up on a good buck any time!

I'm not too picky about times of the season, due in part to my limited time to hunt. So whenever I have a chance to hunt, I take it!

Rut is great to see alot of bucks, but IMO calls, etc.....late OCT pre rut is when the time to strike is! I still hunt the rut etc.....but pre rut is the time that if I only had a few days to hunt the entire year is when I would be in my stand.

October 30th-November 10th is my favorite times in my neck of the woods---I see alot more bucks cruising and vulnerable around November 5th-10th.

Hey Steve,
Because I hunt so far from home I usually wait until the end of Oct. (around the 25th) then hit it hard right thru the end of the month. My past experience has showed me thebest times are Nov 3-8 and 12- 17. That time in between is peak breeding time. It can be the best time or the absolute worst.

RE: Hunting the illusive whitetail buck!

This is a tough one...

I like The first week of bow because the big boys are feedings like does...Sometimes I can put a stalk on them in the beat fields while they feed for the first few hours in the AM.

Althought Nov. 1st is hot...I have a hard time hunting rutting bucks because the one area I hunt in the thumb is just weekend hunts...lots of cahos at deer camp during this time...the little ones are old enough to hunt now and things get a little squirrly...so sometimes I may take them out...

Nov. 15th - Opening day of gun is hot and I can sometimes score on a 17 incher if I hunt all day.

The spots I hunt in Livingston county are small acre areas and booners are uncommon because of the cover in my area...

I hunt the early season and try to put some meat in the frezzer or a Buck if its big enough. But I save most of my days for the Last week of Archery season which most of the time is the 2nd week of November.

Nov. 9th every year is the date that I have seen the biggest bucks of the season on for the past three years on my farm. Maybe its coincidence but that is the day that I will not miss by being away at school.

For a big buck, last week of October thru the first week of November ....

RE: Hunting the illusive whitetail buck!

I tune into actually hunting bucks during early November, but prior to that I am looking for thier presence and locations and travel routes.
If I get close to one prior , sure I'm going to try to take him , but they don't show themselves too often prior to the of October. The exception has always been early October in the Oaks just et the end of legal light.

RE: Hunting the illusive whitetail buck!

If I can get a summer pattern on a buck I would prefer to hunt the early season. Otherwise, I would go mid to late November....mainly because the rut is later farther north where I hunt.

I am early season before all the woods get filled up with muzzleloaders and riflers...
Archery opens Sept 15th in NH and the first two weeks of the season seems to be the best or the last two weeks of OCT.

P&Ychaser,
I can say the same thing as well. November 6th has been my best day by far for seeing the most bucks chasing doe's and also some of the biggest bucks i see are on that date.

RE: Hunting the illusive whitetail buck!

Definately early season for targeting a specific buck. If i know there are several good bucks in the area that i wanted to kill i would say early November....
