Police cornered the cougar in the back yard of Ben Greene
Not the first thing on my to-do list. Cornering a cougar? No thanks.

He said he then ran into his house and watched police chase the cougar on foot.

These guys are crazy

They should be charged with the unlawful killing of a big game species, protected in IL.

Jeezus it took them 10 shots to drop him?! Send them back to the range! 10 shots in a residential neighboorhood = very bad. At least no kids were hurt.

Ya.. I heard about it the other day and it was in this mornings Daily Herald.

All I could think was great.. on top of the constant thoughts that a alien is gonna kidnap me while I'm walking to my treestand in the dark.. but now I have to be on alert for Cougars too.[:o] Son of a....

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in my readings cougard sightings are being documented more and more often in the midwest and east. Actually, several years ago there was a sighting' of a cougar in Virginia. No visual evidence, just a blurry still photo. Still, this was before photoshop and it looked EERILY similar to a big cat. It really is scary. These cats can kill up to 30 deer per year, individually.

CBS news in Chicago is going to run the story on the 10 o'clock news. I heard about it on the radio driving home and there have been sighting farther North in Willamette recently.

Killed on Roscoe Street in Roscoe Village. They say over 150lbs. and about 8 feet from nose to tail. They are saying they don't think it is the one seen recently in Willamette.

I just caught the tail (pun sort of intended) of this on the news, the locals were complaining about the gun shots.....I agree it was careless to fire all those shot in a residential area but c'mon would they rather have that thing roaming the streets? It may help with the rat problem though!!!

So there could be a second in the area. That could be a little more alarming...It takes two to tango if you know what I mean ;)

One big kitty + another big kitty = bunch of small kitties

Still seems dumb they had to kill the cat. The news thing never said the cat appeared to show agression or harmful acts towards people. Why couldn't they ahev called animal control and followed it till it was in need of being shot for safety reasons or control arrived and darted the cat. I'm not one to jump to conclusions when i dont know the whole story but im guessing the officers are glad they killed it and wanted to look like heros/be thefirst ones to kill a dangerous cat. Seems like a waste and a bigger deal was made of the situation than needed to be IMO. WCL

As the shots stopped Greene heard the police yelling, "We got him! We got him!" ........... Now thats what I ment. Those guys didnt kill the cat cuz it needed to be put down, they killed it prematurely just because they could. WCL

They said animal control tried all day with tranqulizer guns but never saw it. The police aren't used to kitty cats that big in these parts.

Haha IC. Still didn't seem that the cat was showing harm or agressionto anyone. Its not like it was in its hunting element/mode in a big city. I'm guessin it was a lil confused and lookin for a way out. Could be wrong though I guess. Never know.

I agree WCL, they were obviously able to close enough to kill it with their handguns (I assume they used their sidearms at least), which means they were close enough to use the tranq. gun on it as well. Drug the cat and have the state dept of resources relocate the animal.

On a side note - is it known if a cougar will trace its way back to an area that it was previously moved from? I know bears are known to do it, but what about Cougars?

Every documented sighting in VA has been tied to a licensed (or even illegally) imported mountain lion. To this date in recent history there have been no confirmed cougar sightings in VA.... and thats right from the horses mouth (of course he says the same thing about cottonmouths and I'm gonna kill him one and carry it to the house).

In WI there was a cougar down by Madisoncausingtrouble, then there was one in upper WI that a guy took a pic of a cougar laying on the padio table outside watching the little kids play in the living room. There is a big rumor going around that the DNR released the cats to control part of the deer population and I wouldn't doubt it. Northen Chicago is only three hours away from Madison I wonder if that could be the same cat. If so I would hate running into one hunting. I think Im going to start carrying my sidearm bowhunting.

The window pic was from out west and was suposedly a tame cat, not WI. The DNR does not release cats cuz if they did they would haveprotection on them due to law suit issues if someone was to be attacked.Thecatin southern WI is real atleast it use to be who knows now. There was blood taken from one of the tracks, after it was found in that barn, from a cracked paw of the cat and was sent to a Montana lab to test for DNA cuz legal pet mt lions come from south america and wild ones in WI decend from the black hills cats. Havent heard if they got results yet or not, may not get results with freezing issues and DNA they figured. Some kids here at UWSP with the wildlife society are studyin it and tryin to prove the WI cats but the guy in the brn beat em to it. Anyway now they are workin with the DNR on it down there.... Get this, they tracked the cat out of the barn that day the DNR and the trapper who spotted it and while tracing it they made a big loop and crossed back over their tracks, Now that is scary!! They were that close to that cat and it knew they were behind it. WCL

Cougars are pretty much spread all over the U.S.
Not a shock at all that they have them in Chicago.
We have lots of them and Bears in Oklahoma.

I have seen Cougars in the wild in Southern IL. They are few and far between, hardly an everyday happening.

Maybe one was on the Northern fringe of his range. Well you can't go any further North in IL.;)

I live about an hour from Dan, and we have reports of cougars every year in the newspaper, but no solid evidence to back it up. I believe there are a few around southern IL.

BTW, was anyone else expecting this story to be about a 45 year old woman that was targeting college guys?[8D]:D

Cops in general are afraid of just about everything so I'm not surprised they were so scared thatthey killed the cat out of cowardly fear. As hunters we know that surrounding and baying up the cat would have been enough until a biologist was dispatched to tranquilize the animal.
