RE: North American Super Slam

While I'll likely never do the entire slam, I too plan on knocking dang near all of it out with my bow. I have a whitetail and pronghorn. Im starting with the deer slam, a black bear, alligator. Then comes elk. I started saving up points this year in a few states, may take 50 years...but I WILL draw a sheep tag in the lower 48 and a few goat tags. A mtn goat is more appealing thana sheep to me right now.

I HATE when someone who knows absolutely nothing about a type of hunting, or what it takes....shoots off his mouth stating that all it takes is money....

There already is a "poor man's slam" so to speak...some call it the representative slam. You don't kill each individual species, just one of each category. One of the 3 bear, one of the 5 caribou, one of the 3 elk, one of the 5 deer, one of the 4 sheep...etc. Besides the sheep, MOST can be done on anyones budget if they want it bad enough...and even the sheep can be had by saving for years. Just a matter of how bad one wants something.

That was also a great point brought up about accomplishing whats important to you vs the standard slam. There are a few species that I likely won't hunt just because the price..or they don't appeal to me. I couldn't give a rip about shooting a Tule Elk over a Rocky Mtn Elk....or what type of caribou I have taken. A walrus will never be lined up inmy sights. I also have no interest in a South African waterhole safari inside a fence.....but NZ chamois and tahr are a HUGE dream of mine. It's about what is important to YOU, not the title of the the accomplishment. My longterm goals are to do several DIY western hunts that push the limit, step foot on all 6 continents hunting with a bow, to complete the deer slam, grand slam of turkey, a New Zealand Safari...and a few others....May take more money than what I can pony up when it comes down to it...but hey, we are talking about our DREAMS here. lol

If anyone is seriously interested in making a hunt, PM me. I have a few relatively cheap adventures lined up for the next few years...DIY public land in far away places, camping and roughing it...but should be some great times and great hunting. Starts with AK and AZ thiscoming season...who knows where from there.:) Will is the encyclopedia on this type knowledge though, and knows about hunting pretty much anything/anywhere.

That's a shame. More and more our past time is becoming pay to play. Hey, you can still have fun hunting the things that you do hunt though, right?
Yep!! I too once entertained the thought of a Slam, but soon realized it is $$$$$$ guys game. I'll enjoy hunting what/where I can afford, and do the best I can.

I learned that having Fun is the most important goal.

I'm glad you don't have to complete the Slam to make it to Heaven:D

Rob,

You know I'm wishing you the best of luck on your pronghorn hunt! Knock one dead!

I had my desert mule deer devoured by feral hogs and scattered to the four winds on Jan 3rd, 09. I made a good 30 yard shot on a 26 inch wide 5x5 while hunting SE N. Mexico. I shot the deer late in the evening and opted toretrieve the beastthe followingmorning. I found a blood trail leading into a mess of pig tracks, pig poop, and uprooted soil. I find neither hide nor hair of my deer from that point. My next desert hunt will have revenge attached.

I'm off to Victoria Island in September for a musk ox.

Jim, what are your plans?
Monie?

This year, I'll go to Oxbow Lodge for bear. If I can make enough money during tax season, I'll also go back to Randy Routiers for mule deer. I went there in '07 and got a decent pronghorn.

Next year, I'm considering Canadian Moose/Woodland Caribou, Muskox/CCBG Caribou(or Mountain Caribou), and Coues/Mt Lion. I may, if finances allow, do two combos. I haven't thought about 2011 too much as I am trying to firm up next year's hunt(s).

I forgot to mention that I'll be putting in for PP's and BP's in Az and Wy.

The black listed animals are species I feel can be hunted DIY. A few more can be added to the black DIY list with a change of state residency (from X to Alaska..."*"). The red list will require a guide or a change of nationality.

Woodland Caribou

Quebec Labrador Caribou
Central Canada Barren Ground Caribou
Mountain Caribou

You've hit the nail on the head, huck.Believe me, I've thought of moving to Ak long enough to get the animals I need! lol Or marrying someone there. I've made offers, but interestingly, no one took me up on it! lol

I wish all the states offeredPP's and BP's.

FYI! I've contacted an outfitter in Newfoundland and he says the Woodland Caribou are in decline. They are waiting to hear from the government to see how many tags they'll be issued, if any. This last season, they were onlyissued 5 tags.

Chuch Adams had a nice sponsor to help him. Get the ones you can on your own. Write some stories and submit them to some magazines to try and get the word out on all the animals you have harvestedalready. Then maybea companywill notice what you have done and offer to help you out.

Darrall Dougherty
Chuck had no sponsors while working on the Super Slam.

A quote from his book:

"Part of it was spending virtually everything I had going after more exoctic animals in the Super Slam. In 1985 I pulled the plug and really went after them. I mean, I went to my local banker. People ask who paid for the Super Slam. I did. I took out several bank loans to go on these hunts because I just didn't have the money in the bank. And I owned a house and I had some collateral and took out loans and paid them back. Those were expensive hunts even then. I paid for all of my hunts-always have and I like it that way. There were fewer strings attached."

That's terrible luck huck! Sounds like a beautiful mule deer. Congrats anyway. Nothing you can do about feral hogs.

I don't know what I am doing yet this year. It all hinges on if I draw a tag in Montana. If I do, then my dad and I are going there DIY for elk and mule deer and maybe whitetails if our buddy actually follows through. If I/we don't draw a tag, then we are debating New Foundland for moose and woodland caribou, Ontario for black bear, or an OTC tag in CO. I would love to see New Foundland, but I don't know if that will be in the cards financially this year.

Good luck on the musk ox! What an adventure that should be! I can't wait for the story and pics:)

If you decide on Newfoundland, contact your outfitter before hand to make sure they have been issued caribou tags! If you missed my other post, according to my outfitter, the caribou are in decline and the outfitters are waiting to see if the government will issue any tags this year.

Newfoundland will likely be my next hunt, next year. If you don't make it this year, maybe we canshare a camp next year. :)I'll be going with Moose Valley Outfitters. They have an exceptional combo price! The reviews of their outfit is just as good! :)

Prince of Wales Island and girlfriends with cookies...this is gonna be fun!:D

Monie, I have some good friends in Az for Coues...
There's actually a ton of public land in the SE corner of Az. Would be a great place to hunt for the small deer without a guide. I have tent trailer and can travel.

Will, we should do a Coues hunt either this coming January or next...right now the plan is to go for both Januarys, just depends on how much loot I drag in this summer.

I have been looking into areas, and like you said SE corner seems to be the ticket. If the plans don't change right now, I will be out there this January, maybe even December seeing as I already have my license for this calendar year from buying Elk bonus points.

We got cananda moose here in mn, as a matter of fact my old man shot the 4th largest in the state. It was every ten years then now it is once in a lifetime. I heard the super slam was closer to $500,000 too rather than $300,00.

I happen to be doing a search on whos on this list and found this post. The gent who scores our deer has completed this super slam. He was scoring my brothers buck this past Wednesday and informed me he had indeed completed this challange. He (Gary Martin) is the only Wisconsinite to accomplish this and only the 16th person also to do so. He did state that number might be a bit lower due to some paperwork issues among other things.
I have to tell you it is a pleasure being at his home and seeing his living room with all these animals. Its like a museam and I will upload some pics a bit later.
Im sure if any of you want to attempt this he would be more then glad to help
out with some sound advice for sure. You can find his contact info on the P&Y website under official scorers for Wisconsin.

That's pretty cool Tony. There is nothing like setting goals and going after them. My hat is off to Gary! What an accomplishment!:happy0001:

Funny thing is Will that Gary was up to #17 I think he said but didnt even pay attention to the super slam. Then is son called and told him how far he was from it then well the rest is history.

For example, desert big horn sheep are nearly impossible to draw a tag. You could put in for years and never draw a tag, or by the time you do you are too old to actually go hunt the dang things because you have arthritis and a walker for Pete's sake. What does it cost to go to Mexico to hunt them you ask?Solomente 60,000dolares Americano (that means $60,000;)). A stone sheep hunt you ask? Well, those are a bargain at $10,000-$15000 plus a nice "trophy fee" of anywhere between $5000 and $9000. Grizzly, well if you kill one it is a steal at $14000. Who in the hell can actually accomplish this? If I started now and killed one new species per year, it would take me 21 years to complete the slam and cost me approximately my left arm, right leg, and both you know whats (and they rhyme with "whats").

You used to be able to hunt black bear in Ontario for $19. That was the license fee... $19 and you didn't need a guide. Now, a good price is $1000.

Oh well, what's one more dream flushed down the toilet of life?

And it is raining... PERFECT!!!

my best friend asked me what he should get my son for his first birth day. i told him "a box of pain and shattered dreams", because that's what i get every holliday.

but i'm slowly picking away at the super slam.

in 20 more years i may get them all.:guiness:
