I'm suprised I haven't seen a thread popup about broadheads for turkey. Season's right around the corner here in Ohio and has already started for some. So, what head will you be using this year? Me-85grain Spitfire.

A new one for me this year. Steeforce Phathead Talon. FEDEX left mine were on the porch this afternoon. A buddy shot one in CA a few days ago with one. He said it flipped over backwards and never moved after that. He said he couldn't get over the wound channel the head made.

Turkeys are amazingly hard to kill sometimes with a body shot. I lost two birds last spring hit pretty well with NAP Spitfires. A buddy of mine said the secret was to keep the head in the bird - either by shooting a 40 lb bow or by using some sort of penetration control device. For me, the latter worked well. I used the ASP washer between a 75 Muzzy and the insert. The Grasshopper washer also works well. Very difficult for the bird to run or fly with a broadhead stuck in him.

I will use the same head i have used for every animal I hunt, they work!!!!

Muzzy phantoms. Only because I will be longbowing it. I suppose I could use my vortex mechs since they are the same weight. I don't know if they'd open on a turkey, but I guess they would. I've got good speed to get them to open.

Any thoughts on mechs & a longbow?

I love my vortex's but I never used them with my recurve asI was under the impression that I needed more speed (energy), I shot magnuswith my recurve. I never hunted turkey with my recurve either, I would have to look at that hard before I did it, maybe chrono the bow and figure out what type of ke your getting and speed.I was told a long time ago that you need at least 240fps with a hunting weight arrow for them to open, of course that wasjust what someone told me, may not be any truth to it?????? I don't know.....

I body shot two gobblers thus far with Rocky Mountain Snypers, neither made it out of sight.

I'm also using the Rocky Mountain Snypers. Rosco has the right idea with the grass hopper warsher. It is tuff business tracking turkeys that fly away.

You got that right Chris. In KS, tkycaller(here on HNI) hit one that took flight. We studied the film (on 3 camera views) and went the way we last saw the birds flight, luckily we found the bird on that side hill. Without the cameras I honestly don't know if we would have found it. (don't know if would have made a difference but he wasn't using Snypers)

I have some Grasshoppers, I might do some experiments with them prior to the season.

I was using Eastman mechanicals. I believe the shot was a little low so I am not sure any other broadhead would have made a difference. I am using the Snypers this year for the first time.
