I am new to this whole Turkey hunting Deal, but I would shoot for the base of the neck/head........with a guillotine type blade/shotgun

I am thinking you are wanting a reply in regards to where to aim if you were bowhunting and I this is where I would aim if I wasn't using a guillotine type broadhead. (I may be way off, I am still new to bowhunting and am still trying to figure this out as well)

Hit em high, watch em die.

Hit em low, watch em go.

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

hunter211 is dead on. Vital area of most avians are further back than people think. Bullethole, your dot is in the back of the breast meat.

Bullet Hole Bailey 04-03-2008 10:51 PM

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

Well not to argue but hunter211's dot is right on the drum sticks which will undoubtedly drop the bird but the actual vitals sit right inder the spine close to where to wing bone connects to the body.......

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

I dont shoot strutting turkeys w/ bow. when he lets it down id shoot right above the leg, maybe a little forward. just to much guess work when they are strutting. IMO then again I am a bit new to this bow hunting.

yea.....

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

Thats a decoy in the first pic, right? Have you been having much success with decoys? BTW, I would shoot at the base of the wing.

Bullet Hole Bailey 04-04-2008 08:14 AM

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

Theres actually 2 decoys in the pic, one jake and one hen......man do these turkeys ever get worked up over them.....they come in strutting and gobbling and I never did a single call to them. Its happened multiple times and even the big toms get worked up. I had a tom with about a 10 inch beard come knock the jake over.....

and that is exactly where id aim.

I have a couple decoys I bought years ago but I've never really used them.[&:] This spring will be my first spring bowhunting them.

Just curious but where is the other decoy. I see the one on the right. Is the other hidden away on the left as circled?

Bullet Hole Bailey 04-04-2008 09:02 AM

Ducsauce....you have my decoys pinpointed:D

its the same here.....i think im gonna shoot a jake this year if it comes in and its on tape......even though i would like one with a full tail.....

If I see a beard he is getting shot at as well. This is my first year so I am not gonna be too picky;)

Same way with me

Here is where I would shoot...but take it with a grain of salt, after all, this is my first time going after them with a bow

Lungs or the heart!

psebwhntr16 04-04-2008 02:58 PM

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

The carotid artery sits right above the leg joint bullethole. I gurantee the bird will expire quicker on a lower leg shot than a higher lung shot. With the higher vital shot, your bird will undoubtably cover ground, however, the thicker feathers in this region of the body will prevent blood from hitting the ground, making it a difficult tracking job.

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

Well I know that I would've gotten one last deer season had I thought about getting a liscence for it! With a normal broad head I would place it right below the neck or in between the neck and body if you will.

MIDDLE OF THE WING

DTC 04-04-2008 07:44 PM

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

As long as you have a good expandable broadhead put it in the middle and watch him flop. Rocket used to make a 4 bladed broadhead that was down right deadly on turkeys. We bought a bunch of them out of a catalog for $9.99 a pack. At last count we were 13 for 13 on turkeys with them. I wish I could find some more of them.

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

I would shoot for the shoulder socket with confidence in my arrowheads...

With gun...I'd take them all out with an improved cylinder 18 inch barrel 12 gauge..[8D]

Just Kidding....just kidding......Head shots with the bird shot for me...

Did they look like this one? Of course this one is not a 4 blader but it is a 3 1/2" cutting diameter Rocket.

They don't like lower poundage and frontal shots,I can tell you that.[:o]

WOW.....did you shoot a turkey with the TFOX?

TFOX 04-04-2008 08:24 PM

RE: Where would you shoot this guy??

YEP,at 25 yards and he went staright up,the arrow fell out,the bird dove to the ground about 50 yards away and I never even found blood.Even looking at the pics gmmat posted, the shot was perfect, just not for the setup and broadhead combo.

I had a witness with me and we both thought the bird would be laying where he hit the ground, the shot was PERFECT but the breastbone was just too much,as you can see from the picture.

i hit one with a rage and it busted right through the breast bone but do you think fixed blades would work fine?

Here's a breast bone from turkey shot from the backside. The head (a Wasp SST Hammer) lodged in the back of the breastbone. Shooter was using a 70lb bow. Just shows you how tough that area really is...

In my case,I think a smaller cut anything would have done the job,as you can see, just the 1 blade caught the bone.Anything smaller would have slipped through, imo.

I am not experienced enough with turkeys to say that I would or would have not been able to shoot through the mass of the bone with a fixed head.

so is head shooting wrong guys ?
in oz we have wild turkey everywhere ( no not the drink althought i have been known) and head shooting leaves the meat in good condition and its about the same size as vital area

Nothing wrong whatsoever with aiming for the head. Hey, if you can hit 'em there then go for it. I think alot of guys aim at the wing socket since it's a better target. For me, I'd say it depends on how close and the direction the bird is facing.

edit: spelling correction
