Maximum Range?
How far of a shot are you guys comfortable with on deer sized game? This is taking out all the factors, and assuming this isn't an alert deer. Known yardage, and lets say it's an open field, such as hunting Mulies, Pronghorn, etc.
How far are you comfortable shooting out to? |
RE: Maximum Range?
It all depends on situation for me, Matt.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
If I'm shooting unbelievably totally awesome its 20 to 25 yards max!
|
RE: Maximum Range?
Sixty yards.
Given the absolute perfect scenario, mentioned above. |
RE: Maximum Range?
More than 5 yards and less than 100.:D[8D] I don't know. I have pins to 50 which means 55 if I want with no trouble. If I were going out west I'd add a pin, but I'd probably still wait and see if I could get a slam dunker. 20 yards and inis so nice.:) I've passed very makeable shots before thinking something better was coming and had it all fall apart. And yet, I still find myself doing it again because it's OK to fail once in a while. Lots better than a gut shot. If I really felt the need and knew the range, 50s fine. I just never really felt the need. I've killed several at 40.

RE: Maximum Range?
ORIGINAL: buckmaster It all depends on situation for me, Matt. For me, and this is just me, I'm confident out to 60yds. That's really as far as I practice with my hunting bow, and that's where most of my practice is. I can usually, and you can take my word with a grain of salt, hold a 3 arrow group inside a paper plate, and sometimes even better. Rarely will I ever drop one out of a paper plate sized group. Once again, believe me or not, that's on average. |
RE: Maximum Range?
45 yards would be the max... but I'll be the first one to let down if I'm not totally comfortable with a shot. Odds of that 45 yard shot happening ain't much the way I hunt... my average is about 13.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
I have pins to 60. I never shot much past 30 though. Most areas I hunt it is just too thick.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
deer.....40yds is pretty much my standard long shot, 50yds id consider, ever since going elk hunting where I was prepared to shoot 50/60yds, I feel I can put one in there.
Also though I thought I'd point out, the farther the shot, the more time the animal has to react, and to a deer that's huge! |
RE: Maximum Range?
I'd say 40yds on deer, hogs I like to be in closer 20-25
|
RE: Maximum Range?
I would have to say 50-55 yards. I make 50 yards shots on the 3D course, but have never taken one that far in the field. I just know I have the worse luck in the world, perfect scenario, something will go wrong for me. A touch over 40 yards is my further kill with a bow, it is also the furthest shot I have taken. Most of my kills are between 10 and 15 yards, I like to hunt in the thick stuff.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
im comfortable out to around 40-45
|
RE: Maximum Range?
I "Might" take a 30yd shot, now.
It was 40 two years ago. It was probably 35 last year. It may be 25, next. |
RE: Maximum Range?
All the shots I've taken have been within 40 yards, and would say max would be 45 under "perfect conditions". I passed up a shot opportunity last year at 55 yards, and that was a no brainer. I'd rather move my stand and try for another opportunity than take a shot I'm not confident in.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
60 at the very max with perfect conditions... 40 yards raining and windy on the buck of a lifetime ;)
|
RE: Maximum Range?
Since Howard took out an elk at 185 yards, I'd say 190 yards at least.

RE: Maximum Range?
30 yards and in and its going down. Farthest i have ever taken an animal was 40 yards, right in the boiler room. That being said, other than that doe, the farthest shot i have taken was right around 20. If you put yourself in the right spot and have patience, you typically wont need to take a far shot.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
Given everything as described and a deer totally relaxed and unaware....I'm not answerring ;)
|
RE: Maximum Range?
35 yards for me.....after that the target seems to get exponentially smaller each yard out.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
60 yards.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
40...MAYBE 45 but thats pushing it.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
This past year my comfortable range was 30 and I was confident I could take a shot at 35 if the opportunity presented itself and I felt comfortable in the situation. This offseason I'm gettin comfortalbe at 35 and 40.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
40 yards
|
RE: Maximum Range?
I practice at 40 - 50 yards regularly and I can probably go further cause I do have a 60 yard pin. In those conditions no problem at 50 yards and probably 60.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
I would be totally comfortable letting one fly @ 50 yards. I'll kill that deer, no question. That's not to say I'll actually shoot, though. I don't really WANT to kill one from that far. Isn't that why we hunt w/ a bow, to get them in close?? Is for me. But.....if it's a good buck out there that I really wanna shoot, and he's straight up 50 yards........Aluminum torpedo out, running hot and normal.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
I've bow hunted about 40 years, never taken a shot past 25 yards and 95% were closer than that...
|
RE: Maximum Range?
Taking out all the variables other than the bow and myself;). Well, then since my farthest pin is 85 yards (assuming I would keep it on for the hunt, which I really probably would not) and that would be my max distance I can confidently hit the vitals of said deer every time. Also assuming I am 'in the zone' as I like to be.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
I clear my shooting lanes to 30 yards
|
RE: Maximum Range?
Not more than 40, and that would have to be the perfect scenario. Open, no wind, relaxed deer, feeling good.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
Last year, I attempted several shots at antelope that were in the 65 to 75 yard range. Several oppotunities came up that were beyond this distance, and I didn't shoot. But considering I didn't fill my tag, I really need to re-visit the logic of slinging arrows in the 65 to 75 yard bracket. Maybe I should limit myself to 60 yards as well.
At the range, under ideal conditions, hitting a pie plate at 70 yards is a high percentage shot. But under field conditions, it appears not nearly so certain. |
RE: Maximum Range?
25 yds.
|
RE: Maximum Range?
I will theoretically shoot to 5 yards beyond my last sighted in pin. In practice it would take some specific circumstances to actually use it.
I am confident in my ability to kill game at any range that I have a pin for with a known distance as a given........too many variables to put a limit on max range though sitting in front of a keyboard. Where a slam dunk might be 60 yards at a standing Elk, a no shoot might be a nervous quartering away buck at 30 in heavy wind? I shoot when my mind and body tell me I can make that shot 100%. Might not always happen but Iam surelynot going to mentally limit myself before I step in the field. |
RE: Maximum Range?
The less yardage the better. The farthest I've ever shot anything under the perfect conditions above was a fairly large reindeer at 39. Given that I wouldn't like to shoot whitetails at anything over 30 and 100% of mine have been under 20.
I'm more impressed by someone who makes the killing shot at 5 yards than the one that does it at 50. (3-D is just the opposite but that's another game altogether...) |

RE: Maximum Range?
50 yards max if i cant get in that close im having a bad day
|
RE: Maximum Range?
37 yds, 2 feet, 3 5/8 inchesand not a 1/2" farther[8D]
Otherwise I don't know, don't really care.I tend to shoot shots that are rather close. So far in the situations that have been borderline, I've never released an arrow. |

RE: Maximum Range?
40 yards

RE: Maximum Range?
If this season opened tomorrow morning I would be very comfy at about 17 yards with my Longbow, when the season actually does roll in maybe 20 yards with the perfect conditions but NOTHING past that. I don't want to take long shots, its Bowhunting, getting them in as close as possible! I'm not hunting animals where I need to shoot far, some folks are, more power to them! Like I said this season its the Longbow, anything past 20 yards I'm saving for the Flintlock, anything past 70 yards, I'm saving for the shotgun/rifle!!
