In order to be considered a yearing, the deer should be at least one year old - othwise why the heck would we consider it a yearing? A deer that's born in the spring will not be a year old by hunting season, so that fall we call them FAWNS...

The next fall they are just over one year old, so we call them yearlings....

Some people want to make things so complicated [8D][>:]:D
i dont call a deera fawn, unless its got spots
Got this from the dictionay: :D

fawn (n):

1. A young deer, especially one less than a year old.
well whatever the dictionary says, im still going with my deffinition of fawn;)

A buddy of mine raises deer. It seems like he mentioned having 150" 1.5 year olds.

I call fawns yearlings and 1.5 year olds 1.5 year old. I also call lunch dinner and dinner supper.:)

let the battle of interpretation begin[8D]

GMMAT 03-18-2008 06:23 PM

RE: The biggest yearling you've ever heard of?

It's only a "battle of interpretation" if you assume that a buck can also mean a female deer in certain vernacular.

A "yearling" IS a deer that is in it's second year.....or was born in the previous year. It's really not prudent to argue otherwise.

A "fawn" IS a deer in its first year......a deer bor nTHIS year.

Iassumed this was common knowledge.

the biggest yearly i know of is sudden impact scoreing 286.if you go to www.whitetailquest.com you can look at 1.5 up to 5.5 old deer and what they score...you have to go under buck listing..he's not on this site.they have 5 on there scoring over 200 as a yearly but there are more out there..a buddy raised 4 yearly this year 160 to 180 and a 2.5 scoring 204 25in inside spread typ

"–noun

1.
an animal in its second year.

2.
a horse one year old, dating from January 1 of the year after the year of foaling. –adjective

3.
being a year old.

4.

An animal in it's second year would be referred to as a year-and-a-halfling. 3rd year = 2-year-and-a-halfling, ect.[:-]

A deer at exactly 1 year old is a yearling or else he is older than 1 year. Simple math.;)

RE: The biggest yearling you've ever heard of?

We hunt wild deer, and have taken 1-1/2 year olds by accident with very big racks for the age and size. 14 point, 10 point, and a couple of 8's that I aged as first rack. biggest was the 10, about 125 inches. Young deer with good genetics can definatelyhave good head-gear, I have noticedover the years, that the pedical is small and racks have been spindly on the young ones.Hunting in Missouri.

We found one dead last year that scored 156 and thought it was a yearling but after further examination of its teeth turned out to be a 2 1/2 lacking any sort of mass. It's masses were all around 3 while its G1s and G2s pushed 12 inches amazing speciman.

Jeff, did he have pics of the deer? Thats hard to imagine. 180" at 1.5.....thats 10 inches of antler for every month its been alive.

RE: The biggest yearling you've ever heard of?

He said they had two of them.....and one died.

I'm angling for a shed or two just to have around. I want one to dislay my Bloodrock Dan made for me. I'm gonna pick his brain some more, tomorrow. I don't know any of this stuff.....but I've seen the promotional DVD for this operation. They have pen-raised deer.......farm-raised deer......breeder deer......and a HF operation. They do concrete work as a sideline.....which is how I know them.

Nice people......and they make a good living at it. Their concrete business is their side business......and I have about $.4M worth of work with them at the moment.;)

RE: The biggest yearling you've ever heard of?

do u ask questions to start arguments?????

GMMAT 03-18-2008 08:06 PM

RE: The biggest yearling you've ever heard of?

Nope. But when someone reads the question and interjects that a yearling isn't adeer in its second year......it really goes against finding the answer to the original question, now, doesn't it?

I mean....a yearling is a yearling....and it isn't up for interpretation. A buck is a buck. Period.

I guess we could just ask questions like......

"Is a buck a male deer"?......and when someone answers "no"....we could just take their word for it. Seems logical, huh?

RE: The biggest yearling you've ever heard of?

I posted this pic a couple years ago... but this is the biggest yearling I've ever seen. He scored just over 150 as a yearling.
