RE: Does the Bow make the Shooter?
I think that a properly tuned and set up bow of today, with proper spined arrows. bows with at least 7 inches of brace height or higher. Bows with lower poundage and at least 75 or 80 percent letoff. These newer bows of today will shoot more accurate, quiet and more comfortable than the compounds of the 1980 early 90's.

No bow makes a shooter, no one brand or model. You may be more comfortable with one bow and not with another. Shooting a bow is all mental from the time you set it up until the time you get it fine tuned. I disagree with Beretta. More of today's compounds are accurate and of course much more faster, lighter, quieter, but as far as more accurate NO! A bow is only as accurate as the person behind it. Some compounds made 10-15 yrs. ago were just as accurate as today's bows.

cougarmag, i'm talking about the old ones with only 50 or 65 percent letoff. the higher the letoff the less weight you have to hold shot after shot. The old bows will wear on your muscles after alot of shots thus making you not as accurate!

I believe a bow can help make the shooter, but won't actually make the shooter. I've seen guys with old bows make awesome shots in front of guys with the best equiptment. Practice and skill maked the mest shooter IMO.

RE: Does the Bow make the Shooter?
Last spring I bought a Relfex Express, its got a 6in. brace height. At the time I really didnt know what I had,yes thats my fault. After I got it set up it took about 20min to get zeroed and I could do no wrong. After a while I stopped practicing as much, mistake. Then I would go out and couldnt hit the broad side of a barn.So I started over focusing on form and got it back. Any way to answer your question I think the bow does have something to do with it. Some are simply more forgiving than others not requiring such strict form. On the other hand, when I had problems it was all me. Myself I could see trying to master more than one bow giving me trouble I'm sure they all have their little things that have to be just right ......1B

All else being equal. Any bow we pick up is capable of better accuracy than we will ever achieve. If you place the Matthews, your Martin and my longbow in a bow shooting machine, I bet that not one of them would shoot better than the other. Like was said above, your mentality when you are shooting and how the bow fits you will make a world of difference in your shooting.

I have to disagree with your let-off scenerio.
Bows with 50-65% let-off are more accurate to shoot in the hands of skilled archers.
In order to maintain 100% back-tension you need low let-off PERIOD!!!!!
70% is not bad,80% sucks!
Sure the high let off feels good, you are able to hold slightly longer (before you start floating around because your not holding any weight).
Most top notch shooters that I know, and most that I've read about or have seen shoot opt for the lowest let off available for their bow.

I am sure that someone probably stated it above...but...A good bow won't make a good shooter any better, but a bad (poor quality) bow will make a good shooter worse.
But, in your case....since you went to a Mathews and actually improved...I would say it is the Shooter....<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>
