Diaphragm FYI
I know a lot of people that have difficulty making the quiet seductive putts, purrs, and soft clucks with a diaphragm. They can yelp and cackle but the soft sounds that help get a bird into bow range are sometimes more difficult. Anyway, something that I realized is that pretty much everyone uses a full size call and most people don't trim their calls. A smaller frame diaphragm makes it much easier to make these sounds and is just as capable of making full tones and volumes as any other call. I tried the mini mag from quaker boy a couple of years ago and found it extremely easy to use. Since then I've turned a few friends that previously had difficulities and it made a huge difference for them. I just ordered a set for dubbyasdoe, so she can call in my big birds (although she probably doesn't need ANY help).:D:D:D Anyway, I'm sure this is common knowledge to some but I just wanted to share.

RE: Diaphragm FYI
Good tip, Dubbya.
I trim allof mine and have no problem making those soft seductive calls now. ;) Good lookin' out. |
RE: Diaphragm FYI
Thanks wash, what the heck happened to the post? It's like a mile long now!
Okay, it's fixed now.:D |
RE: Diaphragm FYI
Good advice! The problem is I can not purr without moving my lips, and I'm pretty sure that's not how you are supposed to do it. It sounds good but I want learn the right way. Do you know any sites that can help explain it better?

RE: Diaphragm FYI
Funny you posted this Dustin i almost did the other day :D, i was un-gifted with a small pallet in the roof of my mouth, no matter how much i trimmed, it did no good because the frame was still to big, i had to go to a youth size diaphram with the dome, all is good now, im using the quaker boy with a triple bat cut.

Do you know any sites that can help explain it better? Rolling your R's while blowing is one, which I absolutely can't do. I choke. Or how you described, by moving your lips. I explain it by calling it the "Motor boat" way. Theres no right or wrong, just differen't. |

RE: Diaphragm FYI
I really need to practice more with mine. The little bit of reading I did when I tried my first diaphragm was the rolling Rs to purr, but I never really got around to practicing a whole lot.
LMAO. Best part of that movie in 5,4,3,2,1....... |

and what is up with the lack of tongue rolling skills ???????
ha ha ha ha ha MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM, the meatloaf! |
RE: Diaphragm FYI
Well then just look at it as you getting to save money. ;)
I can roll my tongue. I can roll my R's. I just can't do it with a call in my mouth. [>:] |
RE: Diaphragm FYI
Motorboaters: I have a pretty shallow gag reflex too - so to get a good purr, I cut a little off the back (careful not totrim so much that you lose your seal), then I kinda turn it a little bit to the side, and roll my tongue over it.
You kinda have to cup your tongue and just roll the tip of it over the reeds. I have this technique where I kinda just roll the left half of my tongue, and pin the call down with the right half. That's why I turn the call a little bit sideways. Yes, this is a conversation between men about the depth of our gag reflexes and how long our tongues are . . . |

They've known about the issue with the big frames and big tape for years and market all their calls with the smallest frame without going to the youth frame. Great calls offered in many different cuts and reed thickness.http://www.rivervalleygamecalls.com Personally I use mine without tape. ;) |

RE: Diaphragm FYI
Not yet blood, and at first it pissed me off as they are not putting out a new Vol IV DVD but when I learned the route they are taking I'm fine with it.
They are going to introduce an interactive TV show on the website and eventually that'll prelude into a TV show. MY hunt should be featured there and I'll let you know if it appears. Otherwise I have it on vhs and I could send it to you. |
RE: Diaphragm FYI
I havea ridiculously sensitive gag reflex for some reason so I've alwaystrimmed my calls

RE: Diaphragm FYI
I know a fair number of comp callers who cannot purr with a diaphram call by vibrating the vocal cords. I've been using a diaphram call my whole life, and I still just purr by rolling my tounge, sans call... tuck it in the cheek. Sounds better that way anyhow... if he is close enough to hear it with a call... he's close enough to hear it without. Best way to make a fighting purr is the motorboat... its a more agressive call anyway.

RE: Diaphragm FYI
i don't have tons of birds under my belt, but i will say that the birds i have gotten i have NEVER had to purr with my diaphram call......just thought i would throw that out there for the guys who are newer to the sport...it is not something i personally feel will make or break a bird...
