Cover Scent Question?
I do alot of bowhunting....... especially sept thru early december I'm in a treestand atleast 4-5 times a week and sometimes more. I do TRY to hunt the wind and I am always using a cover scent. I am alway spraying my clothes w/ cover scentand even Ispray my head and even my arm pits.
My question is, do the normal "cover scents" (Scent-a-way by Hunters Specialties)really eliminate actual body odor rather than just clothing? |

I think scent eliminators do a pretty good job with body odor. I use Dead Down Wind, the whole line, and have been very pleased with the results. I don't really use a "cover" scent, I try to be 100% scent free, so I don't use fresh earth or anything like that. I think if you team up a good scent eliminator with good carbon clothing, you will have the scent game under pretty good control.

The commercial scent killers all work fairly well, but there is no such thing as "scent free" no matter what they claim. For cover scent I use and swear by Deer Dander™, it probably won't fool a mature buck, but I've had more than one deer walk to within yards or even feet of me since I began using it.

Scent eliminating sprays do work pretty good, but as mentioned, they are not fool proof. I personally don't use a cover scent as I would rather smell like nothing. There's no dirt in fresh earth scent, so it's chemically fabricated. Dead down wind and scentlok, and play the wind as best you can.

Deer are able to decipher and identify many scents at one time. A cover scent will do nothing to cover a human scent. It will only add another scent for the deer to identify.

Haven't tried them all, so I will comment on my experiences only.
I think I am quite methodical with my process and have had very good results with deer only a few yards away. Including stalking to within 20 yards of a mature Doe. #1) I wash all my clothes with UV killers and scent elimination soap, this includes wash clothes and towels, then secure these items in plastic bags. I even wash my hands with scentless soap prior to touching them while taking them out of the washer and dryer. #2) Before going afield if time permits, I take a scentless soap shower and use the virgin towels to wipe dry. #3) I spray my truck with scentless spray befor getting in. #4) When @ my spot after getting out of my truck, I spray all over with scentless spray and put my scentlok on. #5) Lastly, when I get into my tree stand, I re-spray if I think I need too. |

I don't use any cover scents at all. I do strive to be as scent free as possiblethrough any and all methods at my disposal.

I have used all that stuff (cover scents, carbon clothing, scent eliminating sprays) in the past, and after many observations from the same trees and conditions, I am 100% convinced that they are all a waste of time and resources.
Have I had deer come in downwind and I remained undetected using these products? Absolutely, but I also have had the same experiences under all types of conditions including wearing unwashed clothes and going unbathed for 3 days in a row while hunting out of a dry camp. For you guys that hunt lots of days within a season and in areas with high deer population, experiment and make your own conclusions. If done with lots of repitition and objectivity, I am betting you will come to same conclusion. IMO, you can fool young deer fairly often and a mature deer very seldom, regardless of scent control measures. |

Hey "jackflap", I see your from the panhandle of the big "T". I went down for a hunt last season and agree with you 100%. I was in the central eastern part of the panhandle, around Briscoe area. It sure is different up here in the northern New England area. I believe every advantage is needed and agree once again about the observation of mature deer. |
