Cover Scent Question?
I do alot of bowhunting....... especially sept thru early december I'm in a treestand atleast 4-5 times a week and sometimes more. I do TRY to hunt the wind and I am always using a cover scent. I am alway spraying my clothes w/ cover scentand even Ispray my head and even my arm pits.
My question is, do the normal "cover scents" (Scent-a-way by Hunters Specialties)really eliminate actual body odor rather than just clothing? |
RE: Cover Scent Question?
I think scent eliminators do a pretty good job with body odor. I use Dead Down Wind, the whole line, and have been very pleased with the results. I don't really use a "cover" scent, I try to be 100% scent free, so I don't use fresh earth or anything like that. I think if you team up a good scent eliminator with good carbon clothing, you will have the scent game under pretty good control.

RE: Cover Scent Question?
The commercial scent killers all work fairly well, but there is no such thing as "scent free" no matter what they claim. For cover scent I use and swear by Deer Danderâ„¢, it probably won't fool a mature buck, but I've had more than one deer walk to within yards or even feet of me since I began using it.

RE: Cover Scent Question?
Scent eliminating sprays do work pretty good, but as mentioned, they are not fool proof. I personally don't use a cover scent as I would rather smell like nothing. There's no dirt in fresh earth scent, so it's chemically fabricated. Dead down wind and scentlok, and play the wind as best you can.

RE: Cover Scent Question?
Deer are able to decipher and identify many scents at one time. A cover scent will do nothing to cover a human scent. It will only add another scent for the deer to identify.

RE: Cover Scent Question?
Haven't tried them all, so I will comment on my experiences only.
I think I am quite methodical with my process and have had very good results with deer only a few yards away. Including stalking to within 20 yards of a mature Doe. #1) I wash all my clothes with UV killers and scent elimination soap, this includes wash clothes and towels, then secure these items in plastic bags. I even wash my hands with scentless soap prior to touching them while taking them out of the washer and dryer. #2) Before going afield if time permits, I take a scentless soap shower and use the virgin towels to wipe dry. #3) I spray my truck with scentless spray befor getting in. #4) When @ my spot after getting out of my truck, I spray all over with scentless spray and put my scentlok on. #5) Lastly, when I get into my tree stand, I re-spray if I think I need too. |
RE: Cover Scent Question?
I don't use any cover scents at all. I do strive to be as scent free as possiblethrough any and all methods at my disposal.

RE: Cover Scent Question?
I have used all that stuff (cover scents, carbon clothing, scent eliminating sprays) in the past, and after many observations from the same trees and conditions, I am 100% convinced that they are all a waste of time and resources.
Have I had deer come in downwind and I remained undetected using these products? Absolutely, but I also have had the same experiences under all types of conditions including wearing unwashed clothes and going unbathed for 3 days in a row while hunting out of a dry camp. For you guys that hunt lots of days within a season and in areas with high deer population, experiment and make your own conclusions. If done with lots of repitition and objectivity, I am betting you will come to same conclusion. IMO, you can fool young deer fairly often and a mature deer very seldom, regardless of scent control measures. |

Hey "jackflap", I see your from the panhandle of the big "T". I went down for a hunt last season and agree with you 100%. I was in the central eastern part of the panhandle, around Briscoe area. It sure is different up here in the northern New England area. I believe every advantage is needed and agree once again about the observation of mature deer. |

I use Wildlife Research Center's Scent Killer. The odorless formula only.;)

RE: Cover Scent Question?
I think scent killer etc......spray onto whatever you spray them onto, and kinda cover/surround those particles keeping them from being detected by animals, so spraying them on your clothing, when you sweat and that sweat htis your clothing they probably stop some of it, but thats what deodorent from scent killer is for.....along with bodywash, and then you should try your best not to sweat during your hunting. I really think scent killers etc....are designed for once you get out of the truck......that odor you picked up from your car...etc.....the seats, to conceal that, get that off your clothing. Another reason to try your best to get dressed in the field.
cover scent vs. scent killer though, cover scents all ive read are not suppose to be used on the body/clothing, rather around you, but I think youre talking cover scents as in scent killer, just thought I'd point out there's a difference. like cover scent in earth, apple, pine, etc..... |

I agree scentcontrol is important..... But I've always hunted while playing the wind & thermals. I think many people put WAY too much effort into trying to be "scent free", andthis is not ever going to happen. What I have always doneis put in the legwork and scout my woods.... Set more than one stand.... Set them with varying winds in mind and hunt accordingly. It just seems to me that some guys now just think they can through on some Scent Lok gear/dry off with a "virgin towel" and they will be good. THE DEER WILL STILL SMELL YOU!!!! Deer were hunted sucessfully before all of the ScentBlocker/ScentLok products. I'm not saying they don't help somewhat but if the deer is upwind from you, it's not going to smell you.

I like to use deer dander spray.I also use a earth scent spray I use.I have never seen a deer spook since I have been using it.

RE: Cover Scent Question?
Scent control has not been that important for me. I tend to hunt with the wind in my face. Typically, I would notjump into a post like this, but I ran into a trick in Illinois I want to share. The boyz up there gather oak leaves and forest debris each morning before heading to their stands. A pile is made and then that pile is lite on fire. They all stand around the fire and let smoke fill their clothing. It seems to work...I had deer bedding around me 360 degrees. The wind had to be coming from some direction. The deer showed no sign of my presence.
So, for what it's worth, it's cheap.....Good luck and happy hunting. |

ORIGINAL: mlo31351270 Deer are able to decipher and identify many scents at one time. A cover scent will do nothing to cover a human scent. It will only add another scent for the deer to identify. I have a ritual I go through everytime I go to hunting. I shower with Dead Down Wind, seem to have great luck with it, I never put on my outer hunting clothes until I get out of the truck at the parking lot, I always keep my outer wear in a plastic bag, I never wear my rubber boots anywhere other than the deer woods, they also stay in a plastic bag all year, and I always hunt the wind. Since I started this regiment I've had much better luck at getting close to deer. The only time I got busted this year, I thought I would try Deer Dander due to some of the stuff I had been reading on here. IMO, it's another scent to put other deer on alert! I'll never use it again. With Dead Down Wind, you are trying to make yourself invisible in the woods concerning scent. I also believe different people will emit stronger odors than other people depending on the foods eaten and other factors. |
