Stand Names ?

For you guys that have permanent stands/locations, how do you name them? random names? or just numbered? lettered? Curious to hear some of the more clever/bizarre stand names out there? And the more generic.

personally.....we have the "magic stand" my dads favorite, not mine.

AJ, which is Anderson Jr.,

then some generic stands, like the North field stand, Ridge stand, north drainage.

RE: Stand Names ?

One of my fav's is the Aquarium stand. Named because of a broken aquarium that marks where you turn off the path to get to the stand.

Onestand is named for one of departed hunting companions, Joe's Stand, the rest are pretty generic.

all of my stands have a name...but none are really unique, i just say the old metal ladder stand or the lock on, etc.....

RE: Stand Names ?

Most of ours are generic like the "west food plot stand", the "cliff stand", etc. The only one that isn't we call the "5 deer stand" b/c we have killed 5 good bucks out of it.

If I have one, can I call it "Boo Boo Kitty F&*%$"! or would that be wrong?

Allmost forgot, there's the Apartment stand. So big you could live in it.

Huntingson - how long has it been the 5 deer stand??

RE: Stand Names ?

All of our permanant stands have names, we even name some places without stands.

To name a few....

"The Shack" - Because there used to be an old shack/house there that the mother of the property owner was born in. One of my favorites.
"The Barn" - Because it is only about 75 yds behind the only barn on the place. Close enough to where acorns hit the roof it scares the crap out of ya.
"McDaniel Spring" - The actual name of the spring you have to cross to get to the stand. My favorite.
"L-Shaped Tree" - The prettiest stand on the property. There is a tree that bends into an L shape that is the first thing you see when you arrive.
"The Point" - Where a ridge comes to an end. You can see for miles.
"HLT" - Honey Locust Thicket.
"The Saddle" - Where three ridges meet. It's one of the highest places on my land.

Other areas such as The back corner, Top of bottom field, Big Ravine, and Big Bluff, are recognizable to only us.

RE: Stand Names ?

Leanin tree...for obvious reasons

back nine....my farthest spot through water holes in a place called Rockwood.

the ridge.....obvious again

the onion......atrail off of red onion rd.

wooley swamp......obvious[&:]

ponderosa......a spot on my grandfather's "compound"

God's country close, and far.....Two spots in a cranberry bog that just look so beautiful, you can't help but call it Gods Country.

The Charles Manson....spot behind an old pine hawker's house(creepy looking dude).

Grue face.......another spot behind an old man's house....again, interesting character to say the least.

Finally, there'sfuzzy cats, and that's about it for creative stands. A few others are generic.

RE: Stand Names ?

During bear baiting/bear hunting we name all of our baits. Some of our baits have had the same name for 30 years, well established baits! We name our baits by the surroundings of the woods or by something that fits the area good. We've got some weird names out there but its allot of fun naming a new bait.

RE: Stand Names ?

In a now long overgrown rice plantation in south carolina I had a ladder stand that was the "ghost stand" as it would start unexplainably shaking when it was dead calm and the hunter was dead still. I have my theories, but I made up some bogus story about a slave revolt in the early 1700s and how the slave quarters used to be at the head of the road and that the current property owner said the place was full of deer if you could handle the "happenings" around the old levy cutovers.

I always thought it was funny when my friends came back to the truck white as a sheet.... spooked me the first time I hunted it, but I got over it and shot several deer out of that stand in the four years I hunted there during college.

RE: Stand Names ?

I try to name all my stand locations, I have around 20 so I have to keep track some how. I have one that is called the bow buster because of two mishaps that resulted in bows coming apart. My buddy was shooting at a doe and his glove fell between his string and cam without him knowing, not good to shoot with a glove there. The other time I shot at a doe and hit my top cam on my EZ hanger, not good to do either. Another one I have is called to sky scraper cause its about 29 foot tall, another is the corn crib cause its right next to a old rusty wire corn crib.

The ole Michael Dudikoff standis literally a "River of Death".

After I put ina pit of "Quicksand" directly below it, I have been slammin' Booners since! ;)

If you and Justin come down and join me at the Dudikoff stand, we could be "Musketeers Forever".

Thanks for asking Duke!

How is Tom Beringer treating ya?

Swamp Collie's post in a previous thread, about the Ghost Standgot me curious.Who has an unexplained incident that happened to them while in the woods hunting. Something that gave you the heebe-jeebies, or flat out made you want to get the heck outta there! I was walking into a spot to bowhunt several years ago, about 2 inches of fresh powder on the ground, and I swore that each time I stopped I heard footsteps continuing towards me, not 20 yards away. I would stop, and there would be three or fours foot steps, then they would stop. It was dark with no moon, and my mini mag's batteries were pretty weak. I proceeded to jack up a tree in my climber, and when it got daylight, I checked my back trail and there were only one set of tracks (mine). Had me pretty rattled all morning.

My dad hunted in Missouri on an annual hunt, where farmers allow hunters to use their land, and there are prizes for the biggest bucks. Prizes which go to both the hunters and the land owners. Stand selection is random. My dad got picked for one particular stand, and a young guy, 19 or 20 years old dropped him off before daylight. A horse trail ran on a hill side behind the stand. About 0930 hrs, after seeing nothing all morning, my dad says a man whistled at him from the direction of the horse trail. He turned around, only to see nobody there. A couple of hours went by, and dad heard the same exact type of whistle, only to turn to nobody there again. That evening, when the young man picked dad up, he asked dad if he heard anyone whistle while he was on stand. Dad said yeah, was that you checking up on me or something? The young man said no, that was grandpa checking up on you. Somewhat puzzled, dad asked why would the guys grandfather be out there, when the boy told him that gramps had passed away several years prior, and the stand Dad was in was one of grandpa's favorites. The boy says several hunters have reported being whistled at.

There is a couple locations that we have stands in that we have named. Machinery Holler-its a big holler my grampa used to run tractors, balers, mowers, and rakes up and down it to get to one hay feild to another. The Green Strip- it's about a 5 acre strip of grass. Up ontopof ferns- you gotta go up a huge hill to get there and the person we bought it from was named fern. Sandrock Holler-another big holler that is full of big rocks.
