I am shocked that so many people are in favor of STATE MANDATED bow hunter training.

Does everyone really think that the STATE knows what's best? Like I said, education is great...it should be available. But why should I HAVE to take a course just because someone else WANTS to take a course?

Many of you must not be very confident in your skills if you think you should be FORCED by the STATE to attend training.

It can be a slippery slope...after a while, what are the other restrictions the STATE will place on our hunting? First its mandatory training...what's next? More restrictions....

I am on the fence on this issue. I believe that education is a good thing and know that there are certain individuals who NEED to be educated before going into the woods, but any time you make something mandatory it becoms tricky.

Badger_Girl sums up my feelings pretty well. Especially that last part. Think about it. Most of us have taken hunter's safety courses that are state run. What have you learned more from, that state runcourse or your family, friends, and other hunters? That should be a rhetorical question.

Just throwing this out there, I don't "have" any evidence to back it up. Could it be that the states are protecting themselves from lawsuits resulting from injuries occuring on state land, that they opened up to public hunting? Or protection, because the state encourages hunting on all properties, and takes tax money from the activity? They domake money off of this.

Oh, I don't know. Maybe the state will set bag limits. Maybe the state will set season dates for different game animals. Maybe the state will issue licenses.Maybe it will tell you exactly how you can kill a deer.Bottom-line:Hunting is already a highly regulatedactivity. And both the hunter and the wildlife are better off for it.

My point is, we are already on the slippery slope. We got on the slippery slope when we created game commissions and conservation departments.

For the record, I supporta mandatory bowhunting education class.

I guess we should have STATE MANDATED training for everything in our lives. The state better teach me how to walk my dog, how to shovel my snow, how to cut my grass, how to build a fire in my fireplace, how to participate in competetive sports, how to drive. If I want to participate inanything that could possibly result in bodily harm or property loss,I better receive some really high quality training from the state. Without the state teaching me how to do something, there is no way I could possibly do it right.

how to drive.
I take it you are from Wisconsin by the screen name. Interesting that you didn't have to take a driving test. I thought most states were doing that now.

Never said that. And you can't, in good faith, take my statement that I support mandatory bowhunting classses andsomehow come to a conclusion that I, or anyone, support state-sponsored, dog-walking training.

I like the idea of mandatory bowhunting classes because, in the absence of any empirial data to the contrary, they give bowhunters an opportunity to become safer and more ethical hunters. Sure, families and mentors can fill that role as well. But as someone previously posted, some hunters don't have that guidance. And they need that guidance.

Just as a state mandated grass mowing class would give grass mowers an opportunity to become safer and more ethical grass mowers. Many grass mowers have never received training or mentorship from friends and family, so I guess they need to get it from the state.
