Who's going trad, this season?

I gotta give Matt/PA a lot of credit in one thing......he made a decision to hunt with his traditional bow in PA this year.....and stuck to it. Of course....the only thing funny about that is.....he only had to stick to it one day;).

But the point is.....he committed to it. I remember him saying he was walking out the door saying...."I'm REALLY gonna do this".

Kudos.

I'm gonna take the plunge, myself. My compound isn't going to se the woods until I have a traditional kill, this year.

Who's with me?....lol Seriously.....who's going "more" trad, this year? Greg (tx)? Rybo? BigJ? Someone else???

RE: Who's going trad, this season?

Jeff,

You bet I'll be out this year with my recurve. I've been shooting it the most latelyand I'm getting ready for the fall. I've really never put it down but I've only shot it for funbecause it's what I started out shooting in 1973. Now that I've decided to hunt with it, I'mreally concentrating on my form and shooting in more"hunting like" positions.

I don't know if I'll go as far as to say I'll hunt with it exclusively because some of my stands I'd rather shoot a compound for various reasons, but I'll hunt with it a lot this year. In fact, I've already scouted an area where I'll only use my trad bow in.

Yep. I'm on board.....can't wait.

I am having a longbow built up, plus a new Elite Fire on the way...so, I'll be doing both. ;)

RE: Who's going trad, this season?

I won't be going trad exclusively till I put a P&Y buck on the wall, but I may take one out a few times this year during the "October Lull" to sit on the plots with and maybe get a poke at a doe with.

Me! hunted with trad and compound and will be only the longbow this year. I can't wait! Im also making a few bows, so i think it would be AWESOME to kill a deer with a homemade bow

I think I may actually do the opposite.... I may buy a compound and hunt with it a little... It gets hard for me to keep regular practice with the recurve as the season drags on.....

I almost feel like I would be cheating though....

No need for popcorn.... Everyone has there own ideas of what makes the hunt... Im just not sure I could get the same enjoyment out of it as I once did... Same as rifles vs bows....

my bow is traditional compared to some of you guys! gotta brush the dust off my bow made in 2006!:D

really, i do see myself getting into the tradtional thing sooner or later...right now, im in college and simply dont have the time. if i go out of state to work this summer, im going to have a heck of a time getting ready to hunt with the compound after most likely not shooting for 3 months..coming back in sept gives me a month to get ready and back into the swing of things....with any luck, wherever i go will let me take my bow and target...but dont think that will work...will likely be living in a national park or federal wildlife refuge..doubt they want some redneck out there flingin arrows :D but i'll certainly ask...and will certainly check to see if theres a shop or one of you guys live pretty close so i can find a place to shoot...gotta get hired first...but hopefully things pan out and i atleast get a job...i can pull the shooting together in a month im sure..just no time to keep up with a trad bow

rybohunter 02-18-2008 04:04 PM

RE: Who's going trad, this season?

It all boils down to confidence for me. Last year I made a pretty good effort to try and take a doe with trad gear with a max range of 15 yds. On top of that I 100% ground hunted with it. Got one shot and missed. (She ducked)

This year,I already feel I will be much more prepared to enter the woods this fall confident and accurate. Time will tell. It's too early to make a decision. One day I want to be completely ready and ONLY take my longbow afield. The next day I want to buy a new ROSS cardiac too :DI will trad hunt come fall, its just a matter of what %.

bloodcrick 02-18-2008 04:05 PM

RE: Who's going trad, this season?

Well im not as commited as some of you, But here is the deal :DI started with one (recurve) back in the very late 70's, its an Indian savage, I was very green back then, never killed anything with it and have always wanted to redeam myself with it. My Dad hung on to it all these years and recently gave it back to me :)Im thinking if i get my buck via compound, then ill switch to the recurve and try it on a shelia :DI gotta get fixed up with some new arrows, glove and alot of practice this summer, ill probably keep it 15 yards and under, its only 45#'s.

With all the hype on speedbows nowadays, I'm going to a slowbow;), I'll be going with the Longbow this season! I'm kinda fed up and bored with the Compound, I'm looking to challenge MYSELF more this season! Same thing with the Gun season, this year will be the Flintlock with a patched Round Ball!

I'll Join you Jeff!!! LOL Well I already planned on doing it... Well atleast for spring turkey season. I'll be carrying either my Chek-mate Hunter II recurve or a 1968 Bear Kodiak Magnum. Both sweet shooters.

Here is a Pic of the Chek-Mate Hunter II

And here is the 1968 Kodiak Magnum

Hey PA Hardwoods, that Kodiak Mag is one sweet bow!!!!!!!!:)

Matt / PA 02-18-2008 07:38 PM

RE: Who's going trad, this season?

Yeah I'm a nut. :D I really was committed regardless of what I saw preseason or from stand. I think that's the way you have to approach it from day one of practice, everything needs to build up to it and you con't really do it as an afterthought and probably hope to have any success.

Although the chance I got was 1 in a million I was a sprepared for it as I was ever gonna be and somehow Mars was aligned with Saturn and pulled it off.
The great thing is that it really takes the edge off for THIS season and I can go into it without any anxiety about "What if this?" and What if that?"

I will still hunt with a compound as usual in Illinois with Greg but I'm not sure the compound will see the woods again here in PA. You guys who have never done it.........I really can't describe the level of satisfaction in just SITTING there with a recurve or longbow in your hands. You feel like you accomplished something before you ever pull the string back! Take an animal with it and it almost seems like magic.

I'm already shooting the recurve again staying strong and keeping teh eye sharp. Stepped out on my patio yesterday and fired 4 arrows in a baseball sized group right in the sweet spot from 15 yards away stone cold. Pulled em' and went back in the house. I bet ya I looked like this ------> :)

You will never believe how that bow looked when I got my hands on it. My dad bought it probably 15yrs ago at a yard sale for like $10 or so and it was spray painted all black, and for years we used it to bowfish for stingrays and it was just thrown in the bottom of a boat. And I got my hands on it 3 yrs ago when I starded shooting traditional again and I cleaned off the black spray paint with some 90% alcohol and that is what I found underneath. It is absolutely beautiful. In fact if I knew who spray painted it I would thank them for saving it. LOL[8D]

Thats what its all about BHF!! I've been shooting recurves for 30 years to be exact and I'm going on 13 years of bow hunting strictly with a recurve. I haven't picked up a compound for hunting in 13 years and I don't miss it one bit, thats the way I am. There's allot of satisfaction when taking an animal with no gadgets, it really makes ya feel good!! Everyone has there own way of hunting, mines Traditional and it will never change. Whatever works for you, good luck to the new Traditional hunters!!

RE: Who's going trad, this season?

I will go more trad this year. I got the feral hog last year, now its time for a deer. I hunted with the trad gear probably 10% of the time last season. I intend to make it 50% this coming season. I have been practicing with it quite often. I find it to be very relaxing, much more so than shooting the Diamond. I have also made a breakthrough of sorts recently. I'm not sure what happened, something just clicked. I am shooting the recurve a lot better lately. From different distances, from tree stands, sitting, kneeling, I am all of a sudden,( after shooting it for 2 years!),much more confident and accurate. I will kill a deer with it this year. And I'm taking it to New Mexico in April for a turkey hunt. I plan to tag one bird with the Diamond out of a pop-up and then try a trad bird.

I'm gonna give it a try this coming year.Practice begins this weekend. Any suggestions for a left eye dominant right hand shooter???? This is why I typically stick tomy crossbow, shooting left handed.

yes, when you throw a baseball, or a football, or shoot basketball, or hit golf balls ...... do you do it right handed ? If so, don't change a single thing ! Your mind has all your life coordinated your left eye dominance with your right handedness.

I have a 54# Zipper recurve and gads I shoot it well. I'm working on spining my old Graphlex shafts to the right length, and having a total arrow weight of maybe 650 grains (maybe 700). I'll probably hit a blistering 165 fps with it :) I'm looking to go to 3D more this year, shoot small game, and the big one is spring turkey hunting. I'm using only my recurve for them this year

No see I read a very interesting article on this a few years ago by G. Fred Asbell and he said if you ever want to be totally proficient that you should change what hand you shoot with to match your eye dominance. But that said I know many guys who shoot cross dominant.

RE: Who's going trad, this season?

Kudos to you guys who are doing it, or have been doing it, even if part time. The commitment required for taking on that challenge is commendable in itself and taking an animal after making that commitment must be very satisfying. Every year I toss around the idea of doing it and someday will make the plunge, but I don't think it will be this year.

Best of luck to all that are doing it.

My "new to me" Bear Montana should arrive today.:D:D I was really hoping it'd arrive Saturday, but nope. I won't make the same pledge GMMAT did though.... I know that if I did, I'm stubborn enough to stick to itand I might end up getting skunked this season.
