Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
Mine is called the "first draw" stand. About 75 yards behind you there isa big field. 30 yards in front of the stand is a really heavy thicket and bedding area. Trails running everywhere. To the left of the draw is a filled w/ oaks and to the right the same.
I've harvested 7 deer from that stand and between my dad and brother its somewhere around 15-17 deer. Just wondering what your favorite stand is? |
RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
"Clover Patch" is a stand of oaks about 300 yds from an old clover patch and just before a 200 acr. swamp/river. 8 bucks have been taken from it between me and my hunting buddy, we have passed many there as well, and missed too!! Love that old stand, don't know if we will be able to hunt it anymore though, industry moving in... been a good stand for 30 yrs to a lot of us, it was our turn for about 10 yrs.

My favorite stand we originally dubbed the "no deer stand" because we never saw anything out of it. Then, after my dad killed 2 nice bucks out of it, it was dubbed the "2 deer stand". Since then it has become the "Five deer stand".;)
I've killed1 of the 5[&:] |
RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
I dont have a place of my own to hunt except my aunt and uncles 5 acres where I have 2 stands, not necessarily my favorite place to hunt but Ive killed 10 or so deer there from my "top stand". I used to hunt my friends place quite a bit, my favorite stand there was "the clearcut", was a nice draw that came up out of a creek bottom that was clearcut a few years earlier. The few times I sat in it I saw bucks each time, and missed my biggest buck (at the time). I havent huntedthere in 5-6 years I think. They shot a 160" buck two years ago during the gun season from that stand.

My favorite is a river bottom stand here in KS. There is a ditch that runs parallel to the river (perfect for the prevailing NW wind) and I found this spot were several trails converge. I just hung the stand this year and hunted it once on November 21 and saw around 20 deer and killed this nice eight pointer.

I did have a spot in PA dubbed the iffy spot by the landowner, which I harvested (10) bucks in 10 years along w/ a couple of does each year. Biggest deer was around 135", the rest were 8 and 6's. Have not hunted in PA since the license increase.

RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
I have a Ground stand in PA (Rifle season) Called Porcupine Tree..cuz the giant dead tree beside it was always a place for porcupines. They kept me entertained. I killed geez more than 10 bucks there. I've had to move in recent years do to changing patterns but still usually sit there a few hours, just for old times sake.

[blockquote] I have a stand called the "dubble decker" on a piece of land I got permission to hunt three years ago. It is a huge sycamore tree on the edge of a 10 acre field. As the name states there are two stands in this tree and it has accounted for 7 deer in three years. It is a great early season stand and a great first deer stand. There is always action. The toughest part is getting the deer close to the tree in the field. My fiancee also shot her first deer out of this stand by herself the second day of our shotgun season at 15 yards. It would be a great stand to video from if I ever get around to trying it.[/blockquote] |

RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
My favorite stand was not the most productive. It was in a pecan tree in the middle of a bean field in Georgia. There were 4 trees in a wad. I killed probably 5 or 6 bucks from it, but the best part of it, I put 3 kids in that stand(one was mine)and they all got their first bucks from it. I had built a family stand with 3 seats and camo around it for walls. It was a place kids could get away with a little fidgiting and still see deer. One year my best hunting bud in Georgia was having one of those bad years. I finally convinced him to sit in it and he shot a buck and a doe at the same time. Here's my kids first buck from the family tree house.

"My Tree"-I killed 6 bucks in 7 years and probably 10 does in that time. It's semi retired now. THings grew up and I'd have to do too much trimming to hunt there effectively, and I try to keep the trimming to a minimum.

RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
I rarely leave a stand in one spot for very long due to logging changes in the country side or deer catching onto me, but I do have a couple standsdue to terrain features, solid enterance and exits, and habitat (FEED)that consistently put big bucks in bow range year in and year out, especially during the early part of Sept during the fainting days of the summer feeding phase. I've killed 2 of my 3 oldest/biggest bucks from this stand. I haven't moved it since 00 when I first placed it. It setsin a saddle on the edge of a high mountain clearcut. Its also located in the back corner so its a saddle/inside corner combo that leadsto a great feeding area. Its backed by a massive mountainside covered in thick timber and buckbrush. Huge Bedding area.
Every season we have over 30 elk pass by us at this stand and at least 1-2 whopper bucks show up in that area... not to mention an occasoinal bear and a handful of younger bucks.. rarely any 1.5s or does though, its too high and too much work for the does. |
RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
My favorites stand is a place I call the Beeches because it is a 20acre lot in the middle od our property that is covered in beech trees and oaks. This stand is where I have seen many big bucks including a 200" buck that was later killed in gun season. I have takenthree 8 points and 2 does from this stand. It's an awesome stand with a creek running through it and is a hot spot for rutting bucks. They like to run through this area scent checking and making scrapes. I've been hunting this stand for the past 7 years and is considered my "Honey Hole"

RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
I don't have a favorite stand.:(
I jump around to a new place every year.. new tree.. new land.. new county.. sometimes even new state.. so I have no time to fall in love with any. But I have alot that are memorable. |
RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
I've taken both bucks in my avatar within 40 yds of where this photo was taken. Actually.....they were shot within 20 yds of one another.
Here's my '07 buck (one on the right in my avatar) walking by me in '06 as I sit there without a tag for him. |
RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
Here's another view from the same stand.....
# of deer harvested from this stand would be3. 4 from within 40 yds of this tree. I have taken 3 deer from another single tree.........2 froma few others. |
RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
Mine is Hogback Hill. Now I only hunt this stand in gun season and I've missed more bucks than I've taken, but this is by far my favorite stand. I have moved around the area a number of times, but stayed within 100 yards of the same area over the years. I have seen more deer, and more bucks consistently from this spot than any other. The topography of the land and the road down below funnel everything coming from all directions of the mountain to this spot. It's just one of those places that you look at a topo map without ever setting foot in a spot and say "That's where I want to set up."

RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
The Killing Field...It's a 50 acre field surrounded on 3 sides by woods and bedding areas...It received it's name back in the 70s...We have probably killed 200 deer in this field...
Whenever I take a guest that I really want to score, that's where we put them... Then there is Deer Point...It's a 5 acre field that is surrounded by a swamp on 3 sides...The run of the swamp takes a U turn around that field and the deer cut through the field to feed and go from one area to another...Had a guest kill a 9 pointer with a 18 inch spread there this year...We've only owned this farm about 30 years and just really got it set up properly to hunt about 10 years ago...I'd guess about 50 deer have come from this stand... |

RE: Favorite stand and # of deer harvested from it?
I have to say that our favorite stand is an old wooden stand we have built in on the corner of this clear cut where it goes off into a swamp theres a bedding area about 100yrds in front of it a feild about 100yrds to the right across the swamp and then theres the clearcut right behind it. We'll have to replace it this year but so far about 10 deer have been taken off of it. About 4 bucks the biggest being a 140" 9point, then 8's and 6's i killed my first deer there too.
