do you have your cape??

RE: Gentlemen, the PANIC button has officially been pushed !!

i would euro mount it..

or cut off the antlers, shoot a doe and have the doe taxidermied with the antlers on it.

your taxidemist is screwed with-out the mesurements.

wait til the cape is tanned before you try to measur it. do you know how to measure it??

CAMPFOURCORNERS 02-13-2008 09:44 PM

RE: Gentlemen, the PANIC button has officially been pushed !!

is a taxidermist mounting this for you? if he is he should know how to take a measurement off the tanned cape. when i order forms i measure the tanned cape anyway to order a form. this buck was measured off the cape alone before i mounted it. so theres nothing to worry about.

measuring outside the hair is usually going to give you an inch bigger than what your form will be. ex. 22" around a bucks neck outside the hair you would want to get a form that 21" or maybe even 20". give me a sec and i will post a pic of how to measure the cape after its tanned.

(offtopic thanks sliverflicker)

Here are you measurment points and if you read this link VanDykes even tells you to take off 2" for hair
www.vandykestaxidermy.com/newsletter/feb21-2005.htm
what kind of incision did you do on you buck? when you caped it did you split the cape the whole wayout or "y" incision

it definitely would have been too large:Dhere is a pick of how you measure a cape. if it "Y" incisioned i put a ruller 3" down from the ears and double your measurement.

You dont need to order an form or anythign yet. That deer needs to be fully caped out and salted before you can even get a close measurement but really should wait until the cape is tanned. Then you can get all the measurements you need and get the perfect form. The taxi doing this for you should be able to handle everything once you give them the cape still attached to the head. I prefer it when I get deer like that because I know I wont screw anything up then and the cape will come off with no to minimal holes. WCL

hey thats a great buck especially if you shot it in jersey.

RE: Gentlemen, the PANIC button has officially been pushed !!

Only 3 measurements you need are like he said the C, B and the nose measurment. Shoulders don't need to be measured. WCL

ORIGINAL: DropTine249

Man, the more I look at photos of my buck ,the more I get upset with myself.

I always preach about letting young bucks walk so they grow older...what did I do ? I took a freakin 2.5yo buck..He HAD potential...Man, I am disgusted with myself over this...[:@]..I dont like shooting young animals to begin with....let alone a buck that would have been an actual shooter next year.
Its your first buck man. Nothin wrong with that. Only way to hunt is shoot a bigger one next year. Can't start at the top then ya have nothin to work for. WCL

i mainly concern myself with the B measurement. A is important but if you get a form that 1/4"-1/2" different on the A measurement on your deer it will still mount up just fine. the B measurment gives the true size of the deer. oh and there is no measurement for the shoulders.

oh and i know there are some good deer in jersey just busting balls:D:D:D

I screwed up my first bow buck too. Thought it was a diff deer and happened quick. Ended up bein a 13 inch 10 ptr. Lots of potential in him but you live with it and make yourself shoot a bigger one each year. WCL
