How many years did you bow hunt before you saw a mature buck from stand?
It was my fifth season. How many years did you bow hunt before you had a mature buck in bow range? For me it was my sixth season. How many years did you bowhunt before you shot and recoverd a mature buck? This also was my sixth season. Just curious. |

Too damn long, 21 years but its my own fault! This last year I finally connected on a nice buck, he scored 140 1/8 net P@Y. I've passed on right around 15 or so 120" to 130" knowing I've had bigger and better bucks in the woods through out the years and also wasn't 100% sure if they were going to make books so I'd give them the pass. It could of been sooner possibly but I was pretty picky and still am when I started doing this buck and doe managing stuff. It was well worth the wait though!! |

Seems like there is a curse on me when i go bow hunting. When i have a gun i can see bucks but not when i have a bow. So for me it hasn't happened yet[:o]

To elaborate further... Thru those years I saw many 1.5's and a handful of 2.5's.... It just took a long time to finally catch up to the older age class bucks.... Once I saw one from stand I became even more obsessed..... From then on, I started running into them some what regularly. Odd how it works out...
I shot 2 small bucks the first couple years and then decided to shootnothing but a mature buck.... I learned a lot in those 4 buckless years :D [/align] |

I think you and I both agree that 3.5 is "mature". That being said..... How many years did you bow hunt before you saw a mature buck from stand? I was in my second season.....3 days into the season. I saw the second mature buck of the '06 season on Thanksgiving Day, that year. How many years did you bow hunt before you had a mature buck in bow range? Again......3 days into my second season. How many years did you bowhunt before you shot and recoverd a mature buck? December 9th of 2006......my second season.....1st full season. Scott: I often think about what the answer to these question would be if I'd started hunting deer with a bow as a young man. I have MANY luxuries that a lot of younger guys don't and didn't have (not necessarily monetarily). I'm quite certain beginning deer hunting at 40 has made things easier for me. Another funny stat.....I've only seen 2. I killed them both. |

I don't know exactly, but I think it was probably about year 6 or 7 that I saw my first mature buck.
It was year 13 when I killed my first mature buck. Of course, I didn't really take hunting that seriously when I was 7 so these numbers are rather skewed. |

im going into my fourth season of bowhunting, but the first two I only wenta half dozen times and didnt take it seriously.
I have yet to see a mature buck from stand with a bow in my hand. Ive seenplenty whilescouting (bachelor groups)and rifle hunting, but never while on stand witha bow. Hopefully this will all change in 08.[&:] Im still going to hold out for a respectable buck though. Ive gone for this long, no need to let up now. |

I saw the biggest buck of my life, from a stand, in bow range, about my third year of bowhunting. Didn't get a shot at him. He may have been booner. Since then, have only seen mature bucks from bow stand about 3 times, no shots. Sucks. Had 4 shots at one from a road one time, that sucked too.

I started bow hunting at 15 years old.
my first buck came about 4 seasons later my first big one came 16 seasons later The interesting part of this is that each of these milestones was reached only after I made the decision to strive for those goals. |

Im comming up on 6 years hunting and i have yet to see a mature buck in the PA woods.
I cant really say ive ever had a shot opportunity at a mature buck. Sad to say but my area of PA dosent hold many Mature Bucks. BUT!!! at this point in my life brown is down, simply because im only 17 and havent killed that many deer i still get excited over shooting smaller bucks!! including my 8point i shot this year that scored 43 7/8 haha!!! You should have seen how excited i got over that i still laugh about it!! Ryan. |

Well i have been at it long enough i cant really give you an honest answer, guessing around 4 years before i had my first mature one in range, he was big and had half his rack snapped off, and was dogging a doe, i could not make a shot. all i can say is it was a long time before i put down a mature buck, I had zero guidence, there were not alot of deer back then, and i had no clue what the heck i was doing, Dad would not buy me camo or let me hunt out of trees. I have learned alot from tons of mistakes over the years, i actually think that is a good thing and carved me into who i am today as a hunter.

I've seen and had 4.5 year old mature buck in range, with no shot, in the 3rd year of bow hunting and a couple years later. This past season was my 1st shot at a 4.5 year old mature buck, I missed! I hunted for so many years to take that shot, I blew it! [:'(]

I don't honestly know. My first ever shot with a bow was at a huge to me at the time wide racked buck. I was 14. Was he truly mature....don'tknow. I saw a few other "big" bucks here and there, but back then I wasn't good at aging, and thinking back I just can't recall enough to givea true answer. How many years did you bow hunt before you had a mature buck in bow range? See above. And in around my 4th year I missed another maybe mature buck from a limb deflection. Itwas my first. I took a shot at him from 25 yds. He was working a scrape under a licking branch. My arrow hit the branch and cut it right off of the tree and it ended up in the scrape.:D How many years did you bow hunt before you had a mature buck in bow range? 1st year-see above How many years did you bowhunt before you shot and recoverd a mature buck? I shot my 1st buck in my third year of bowhunting.(240lbs field dressed, 160" gross)After killing 2 does (1 each the first 2 years) Just curious. |

Easy question. How many years did you shoot the first buck to give you a shot in a season?
The mindset I grew up in was that a buck was never to be "passed" on. If you had a shot, you took it. So for umpteen seasons, I drilledthe first buck to walk by my tree and for a while ended a lot of seasons REAL early. |

Second year, missed a nice mature 8 pointer at 15 yards :(....I shot low b/c I was so nervous. How many years did you bow hunt before you had a mature buck in bow range? Second year. Have had only had 4 others pass by in the last 6 years, but I could not get a shot at any of them. How many years did you bowhunt before you shot and recoverd a mature buck? I have never arrowed a "mature" buck and I have bowhunted for 7 years, bowhunting only for the last 3. I shot a 2.5 year old 8 point with a 15 inch spread this year, that being my best buck. I seem to be alternating between being a big buck hunter and someone that just want to go out and hunt does/bucks without worrying about it. I can honestly say that the last 4 years I have seen many more mature bucks, but less deer overall. That I think is a good thing and that I am maturing as a hunter......15 years after I started (I am a slow learner) :D I had noone to teach me how to hunt and just walked around in the woods, reading books, and trying to apply everything I read to the woods. I missed so many chances by doing dumb things, ruining hunting areas, and just plain stunk so many times. But I can say that honestly that really instilled the love of hunting into me and all the hard work that goes into it. |

I saw a huge buck my second year of bowhunting. I saw his tail several times that year.
I seen him again my 2nd 3rd and 4th year. Again lots of tail flashes. On my 5th year I shot a buck in the 170's. Not him. I never seen him again. Now it seems like I will kill a really nice deer 150 or better every 2.5years. I'm already looking forward to the 2008 season. |

Im thirteen and have been bowhunting for 3 yearsand only shoot bucks that will score 150 or over so i havent got one for a year but i saw four different bucks that will go 160 but they were out of bowrange.

My 1st year I saw more than I ever have....to date my 1st year was the only year I've seen a "shooter", since I've seen plenty of 2.5yo that'll go 135". Passed a solid 2.5yo 8 pt this year that would have gone 130-140.
I have no problem holding off, this year I think management bucks may be taken, I'm tired of not harvesting, management bucks and does should be coming soon! ie this fall. |

I wouldn't even know how to answer that one.
I started bowhunting at 12 (without knowledge) and I got serious at 15, that was 26 seasons ago. I don't remember all the deer I've seen in that time frame nor can I recall what year I shot at them....LOL I can recall however recovering my first mature animal, if 3.5 years old is mature, some say yeah, some nah and that was in 2001. |

Aged by DNR at 4.5 yrs. but not a big rack. In fact he would be considered a cull buck in some circles. It took me 11 yrs. to get a mature, big racked buck into bow range. Took him(best racked buck) in 1988. |

Still working on that.;) I'm with Rybo in that when I was growing up we had one tag and if it was a buck it was worthy of that tag. Things are a lot different now and not only is my mindset different, but there is a more realistic opportunity at a mature deer. |
