Check out December 2001 or January 2002 issue of Outdoor Life Magizine on the cost of a do it yourself elk hunt out west. He makes some very good points as to when you are financially ready for the trip. I hope to go west someday.

If you have never hunted elk before then a do it yourself may be out of the question. Hunting elk may be more enjoyable for you if you do everything yourself, but not all of us have the luxury of trial and error on a week long hunt. Where are you thinking about going? I think in Montana you may have some luck finding a reasonably priced outfitter sponser package.
