How Do I Respond to Anti-Hunting Comments

I need some advice on how to respond to these people:

After she saw my pic in a local newspaper (with the doe I got this year:)), someone today blasted me with "that poor little deer," "don't you feel bad?", "you SHOULD feel bad." Before I even thought, I replied "no", and quickly changed the subject.

This was my first season hunting; I don't need people like this draggin' me down, and I refuse to let them.

I became "addicted" to this new adventure very quickly.

I hope to get some advice and maybe some "magical" words that I can use when I get comments like this.

Thanks in advance!

First thing, great job on the doe! It is better to see the doe in the newspaper taken by a hunter than by a vehicle!

RE: How Do I Respond to Anti-Hunting Comments

Educate yourself on why hunting is imprtant like conservation of all species, pop. control, disease control, keep them from over pop. and dieing of disease, donation programs feed the hungry, quick human kills are the goals of hunters, an animals overall herd well being is enhanced by hunting, and much more. These positive facts of hunting will give you the ability to educate the non hunters who only see hunting as taking the life of a "defensless animal". WCL

if they eat any kind of meat at all ask them if they know how those farm raised animals are treated from birth to death. Theymost likely are nieve to the fact that the deer you killed lived a more humane life than any cow they ever ate.

This is what I say to thosepeople: "Do you eat meat (or chicken, turkey, pork)? Majority of people say, "...well yeah". So I just say, "Well you are just eating something that someone did all the dirty work already. At least this animal had a chance"!

If they say "No I don't"!...quickly say "Hey what's that"? as you point in the air behind them. Then as they turn to look, RUN!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just read an article..was it in Japan or China ?? hmmm

They have a deer population explosion. They have hardly any hunters like 1-2% and no way to control the herd. Maybe a google search will yield something. But it's a real world example of what can happen.

Understand where and why this lady feels this way, without sympathizing.

Then, if she is NOT an vegan, its easy !!

Say, ma'am..you eat steak, chicken, veal, pork and fish, correct ?

Now, you tell me that shooting a deer is horrible, and it is mean and murder. But, when you eat a steak...that animal was raised on a farm. It was told what to do, when to do it. If it didnt want to do it, it was forced to do it. I was fed high yield foods, steroids, hormones and fattened to a wieght that was unhealthy for its bone structure. Then, when a PERSON deemed that this animal was prime for YOUR CONSUMSION, it was quickly killed and cut up.

It never lived for itself or did its thing, the way it wanted to do. It was a slave, to be killed.

Now, when I eat a venison steak, that meat came from a free-ranging animal. That animal did what it wanted, when it wanted, how it wanted. There was no human impact, or input, telling this animal what to do. This DEER, fed on natural food, made avaliable by nature. Itmingled with other deer, slept, fed and bred.

Now, when a hunter takes to the woods in an ATTEMPT to harvest an animal for its meat, he is at a GREAT disadvantage. The animal RARELY losses !

In order for myself, or another hunter to harvest a WILD, FREE RANGING animal, we must defeat EVERY LAST ONE OF ITS HIGHLY TUNED AND REFINED SENSES, which is amazingly more difficult that you would ever imagine.

So, this doe that I harvested was not murder. I will be feeding my family with an animal that got to live its life, the way it wanted too, until is was humanly harvested.

Then, throw this in. In nature, only the strong survive. So, by harvesting this animal, I have lessened my chances at a future harvest, why ? Because, her genetic make up was inferior to that of the other deer whos senses I could not defeat. The other deer were stronger, so to speak, for refined and smarter. By harvesting the deer that I did, she will not pass on her inferior genetics, therefore, the more superior genetic deer will live to pass on their smarter, more kean genetics. ( I have actually used this BS statement, haha).

You also must explain that if it were not for hunters, deer and other animals, would reproduce themselves to death. Their numbers would become too high, deseases would become more prevalent, and food sources would dry up. In turn, the animals would start to die off, and eventually, be endagered and then gone. By keeping their numbers within the carrying capacity of the land, we, as hunters, are helping to ensure that these beautiful aniamals survive for a long time, and YOUR grandchildrens children get a chance to experience them !
Great answer Droptine, well maybe except for the BS genetics part.

well she's a woman so you can't say "if you don't like eating deer meat how bout I feed you a knuckle sandwhich" haha. But in all seriousness the way I usually rationalize it for people is explain carrying capacity and explain all the colorful and brutal ways an animal can die, be it from starvation, sickness, predators, cars, etc. Then explain that a nice humane shot from a bow or rifle is by far the best way for that animal to go, and explain how you don't kill them for kicks, but because you use them for meat.

These are all good answers. A mixture of all will likely make you look good. Instead of telling them to "Pound Sand"I would tell them to "Pound Salt" :D.

Some other good facts are deer are capable of consuming approximately 15 pounds of farmers crops per day.You know what that does to produce prices. Without hunting the deer population would go unchecked, deer would starve to death, disease would spreadthrough the deer heard, the meat was put to good use, we fed the poor, and your car insurance would double due to more deer related accidents on the road.

Don't let them make you feel bad, send them to me for a "Session at the Shop".

I have to attest the genetics were good on that deer so I would not use that argument. It was her first deer and she harvested it with a gun. It offends me that people have made her feel bad about something she loves to do and has worked so hard to accomplish.

Here it is:

First of all present yourself properly don't argue or fight. I explain 2 things to anti hunters. first -hunting revenue is spent on wildlife conservation. If it weren't for hunters, many species would be endangered or gone.second- If we continue to attack other peoples rights to do things soon we will become the communist states of america. Also if things would happen to turn bad who do you think the anti gun people would run to for protection?

ask the person, "Would you ask a wolf or a shark if they felt bad about hunting?"

then let that person know that all animals take lives to extend their own, and that she shouldn't take being a person so seriously. we hunt, kill and cultivate other plants and animals just the same as other animals do.

RE: How Do I Respond to Anti-Hunting Comments

im like bowhuntingfool...i wont respond.

these people truely and deeply believe that hunting is wrong and all that.

you cannot argue peoples beliefs. think about it...someone tells you the God you believe in doesnt exsist and is wrong etc etc...your not gunna wanna hear it even if they back it up with valid proof and reasons(just an example of something most people have some sort of belief of..) you just cant argue beliefs...they are personal.

trying to educate these people SOUNDS like a great idea, and i can fire hard facts all day about the hunting industry and the economy, population control, wildlife management, etc etc etc...but they still dont wanna hear it and wont listen.

anti-hunters are known to be some of the least educated people about what they are fighting for. they dont know much other than its "wrong" and "inhumane" and "cruel" and all that stuff...thats about ALL they know...but they dont wanna hear anything else...

if someone is borderline and asks me about hunting, and why i hunt etc, i will explain to them and try a little education and try to reach them with things like "my dad taught me to hunt and its how we bond and spend time together" and things like that...as well as education such as "if hunters did not hunt deer, the population would steadily rise until their carrying capacity has been reached. besides more deer on the roadways, they will eventually eat themselves out of a home, and disease and starvation will become a major problem within the herd" a quick bullet sounds alot more human than being whacked on the road or starving or diseases...

but, that only works if they are borderline and TRUELY curious and asking. i dont talk hunting with people that dont hunt, and other than my vehicle, you'll never know i hunt...and the next vehicle i doubt i put the stickers on...ya i got the hunting t-shirts and that...but only wear them out with the buddies or to a place i know is going to be made up of hunters...i just dont need the hassle...

First thing you need to do is figure out what type of answer will work, all of the above will work, or at least are the best option to toss out at times.

Usually I just say, cause it tastes good and is more healthy than store bought meat. Go from there.

Base point: its legal, its healthy and its good for the environment, I do it cause I enjoy hunting.

RE: How Do I Respond to Anti-Hunting Comments

yes! my first question to her would be are you a vegan? vegetarian? likely her answer will be no, and yes she eats meat, then ask her if its ok for someone else to kill her food for her? out of sight out of mind? I've read horror stories probably from environmental groupsa bout cows still being alive as they go into the grinder, which doesn't seem to make sense, but none the less, and if she is a vegetarian, tell her to get into hunting! then she can enjoy healthy animals killed humanely. I know some vegetarians have a problem and choose not to eat meat because the way its processed, which hunting would make a great alternative for them. Don't get down over someone ill imformed response.

RE: How Do I Respond to Anti-Hunting Comments

yeah, this person went on to say that she hadn't been around hunting; that her dad didn't hunt, neither does her husband.

so, she probably shouldn't have even made the comments to me to begin with, since she knows 0 about it.

thanks for so much feedback!

maybe next time it's said to me (and i know there will be many more). i won't be at a total loss for words.

bottom line is....I LOVE TO HUNT......:)
