More Sheds (3-8 update--page 4)

Instead of making ya'll download the few other sheds I have found this season, I thought this might work better.

http://hunting.net/forum/tm.aspx?m=2600881&mpage=1&key=

The below is the result my wife is due with our 2nd child any day, and the dog is driving her nuts, along with a 35 degree day, why not kill 2 birds with one stone and drag the dog out the woods and walk around, burning off his energy and getting out before it drops down to single digits again (as forcasted this weekend)

After another 4-5" of snow yesterday, I wasn't to optimistic but it hadn't dropped below freezing so maybe the snow would melt/settle.

Ten minutes into the walk and I see ahead of me on the trail.....

Definitely the nicest I have stumbled across this year so far.....

Better get in what I can before the new addition to the family shows up.....just like how you can't shoot deer sitting on the couch, you can't find sheds there either ;)

UPDATE:

2-13-07

Found them about 100 yards apart

2-16-08

Got out this one the morning before the big storm (got about 10" on saturday, then another 5" on Sunday)
Snow is getting a bit deep out in the woods [:@]

2-23-08

Found three on Saturday, unfortunately I didn't find any of these, my dad did, figured I would let him look in the 'better' spots, besides they are the spots it is easier to walk to, the snow is up to about mid thigh if you step off the trails....

This one was a heck of a find, he basically stepped on it :)

2-24-08

Today we brought a tractor with to break some trails to the back end of the property. Without this little bit of help, I don't think we would be getting back there for sometime. Even with a broken trail to follow it was pretty tiring getting back there (about a mile from where we parked) Heard the other day we are sitting at about 60"+ of snow this year, fourth highest on record...

I also believe that by breaking trails it will make it a bit easier for the deer until the snow starts to drop.
The amount of deer tracks in the older trails we have made backs up this idea.

(no the dog doesn't find the sheds, but it sure does tire him out ;))

If the bucks stay in the area, it is shaping up to be a real promising upcoming season.....

We also are still seeing bucks in the area with both antlers running around.......I can not wait till July to start filming these bad boys.....

Well, got another 3-4" of snow yesterday, so, must be a good time to get out in the woods looking for sheds ;)

First shot is of the dog and a trail we cut last week with the tractor, I can't wait for it to get warm out and maybe uncover some of them buried antlers..... (he is a bit over 100 pounds and still won't find sheds for me [:o])

First (and hopefully the last) dead buck of the year, I have been through this area seven times this year, and he had a little bit of snow on him, his neck was still pretty flexible, odds are he passed in the night, (temperature when we took this was a around 20 degrees, should have been pretty stiff if it had been there longer)

They aren't to hard to find when they look like this

This one, if you look carefully to the right, you can see my boot print, yes, I stepped on this one, sometimes you just get lucky ;)

Pretty good day, 4 sheds, in 3ish hours little over 5 miles walked for the day (got a pedometer to keep track of those sort of things)

So, for those of you keeping track, that is 21 sheds for the year, thinking one of them was from last year, 3 matched sets, so there are at least 14 other singles out there.......can't wait for the snow to melt......

Nice find! I should have went out today. Most of the snow had melted and it would have been a great time since another snow storm is heading my way.

RE: More Sheds

15 minutes outside of city of Waupaca, Waupaca County

Last two times out bowhunting, I saw 2 one horned 2 years olds and 5-6 one horned yearlings, (that would be January 4th and 5th)

Been staying out of the woods hoping that a couple of the bucks I had been seeing would stay where I had seen them and drop their antlers in that area, the antlers could be there, but there is sooooooo much snow,

3 of the 4 antlers I have found this year have had blood on the bases......so I am optimistic that there is more buried under the snow.....

Went out Wednesday after work and found nada, but tonite, after slogging through the snow about 3/4 of a mile back, I was standing there catching my breath, I look down at my feet and low and behold;)

I was then panning around with the camera to make a visual record of where I found the shed, so I can come back when all the snow is gone and I see this on the trail about 50 yards away.....

I think they might be a matched set......nothing real big, but that really isn't the point, that is just a bonus ......:D:D

Really? I have been dying for the snow to go down, so I can get out and do some serious looking, snow depth in the shallow areas is about 4-6" and in the deep areas is probably pushing 20"

I gotta imagine there are alot of antlers out there that wont see the light of day till we get a good week of 35+ weather.....

how to you hunt for sheds? just walk the deer trails and keep your eyes peeled? do they normally scrape them off on trees or bushed?

That is neat, nice finds for snow! I happened to find a matched set saturday from a decent 2.5 year old (about 120") while i was rabbit hunting....but I am not going shed hunting hard-core untill some of our 18" of snow melts off! I look for this year to be a great shed year for me, the deer are really yarded up locally.

The last few that I have found have been laying on trails, however, I have seen as recently as last week bucks at my dad's house butting heads. So I am sure that would translate into sparring knocking loose antlers off also.

As for looking for sheds:
go slow
take your time
walk the trails
take a pair of binoculars with (if you have some)
take frequent breaks and look around
investigate everything (I have found sheds frozen below the surface of puddles)
stop and look at where you just came from (it is possible to kick one up without seeing it)
dont forget to look at your feet besides looking in the distance

if you have access to a older shed, small, large, whatever, take it with you and throw it around, so you can see what you are looking for, helps train the eye, I will still take sheds that I have just found and toss them ahead of me.

It is actually pretty easy to find them, if they are there to be found......

If you know where the deer are, and it is easy to get to, check the area as often as you can, or as much as you feel comfortable with.

One area that I have been working over pretty hard, I noticed that the sign (tracks/beds) was getting less, so after staying out of the area for a couple weeks, came back and the sign is thick as ever and we found 3 sheds no more than 60 yards apart.

That is what I thought, but after this weekend, with the deep(er) snow, the deer do not wander as much, there are fewer trails in the woods thus it takes less time towalk them. Yes, depending on when the antler dropped, you may walk right over it and not see it but if it is on top they are harder to miss.......

RE: More Sheds

Well, the wife was (actually still is) running a fever, so just didn't feel right leaving her alone with a 3 week old baby and a 2 year old, so my dad went out looking for some sheds today.

Right around 40 degrees today so the snow is starting to settle, he said both of the sheds he found just had the tips sticking out of the snow. So, maybe we will start finding some more that have been buried the last couple months.

A promising sign, he said he saw 7 bucks with horn still on their heads, 3 full racks and 4 half racks. Down side, he saw a large black dog running around with a deer leg in its mouth, might be why he saw that many deer, he said they were running all over the place.

In case anyone was wondering, this is not a normal year for us for finding sheds. Over the past 11 years, the best we have done is 17 sheds, and we are sitting at 22 and counting. Hunting this year it seemed like there were alot less squirrels running around, don't know if this has anything to do with it, but it is nice to find these things regardless.

RE: More Sheds

Well, been working all week with the dog around the house and out in the yard, trying to teach him how to find sheds.

Initial impressions, we got a lot of work ahead of us:(

He will find the sheds in the house and with a bit of work, outside also. However, once we get out in the woods, well, it is alot more fun to run around and all thoughts of trying to find a shed go out his head. I brought along a small shed to so he could find something while we were out in the woods, but even with placing the antler very close to me, he could care less, he even stepped on it once......

Nonetheless, after about 3 hours, I found two and my dad found one.

Now this is not the end of the story, I had to leave the woods and go home to watch the boys, (wife had a jewelry party to attend) but my father got to stay out in the woods for another 2-3 hours. He managed to scrounge up three more horns, one was even within about 20 yards of where I had walked earlier. I probably would have stumbled across it but he had called me over on the radio to take a look at the half of a 6 pointer he had found........I think he is not liking that I have a 7 horn advantage on him so far this year....;)

What is kinda cool about the two 5 pointers he found is that they are probably the other sides of two of the sheds we found last weekend (one of the sheds was found at least 400 yards away from the first side we found)

Nice sheds!!

Ive been practicing with my dog on finding sheds too. She finds them around the house and in the back yard. Her first time in the woods will be this week. I hope she keeps it up.
