RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
1.........No and yes..yes being I have CB's now...
2.........Hunting Whitetail more with my Trad bows and Useing longgun for bigger N.A.B.G.ie Elk,Moose,Bear and going on more far away DIY hunts... But my compound will still be used for hunting overall.... |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
5 years ago, I was using a bow that was about as fast, and with pretty much the same amount of gadgets. I didn't have a rangefinder then though, used to pace off to shooting lanes ahead of time.
5 years from now I'll likely be chasing them with trad gear. I'd like to take a P&Y deer first before I make that move, but once I've got one of those I'll probably go exclusive w/ trad for a while at least. |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
Until last month, I was using the same stuff for 20 years (including firearms). The only really new thing I had was a ground blind. I also started using aerial photos.
Five years from now, who knows, but I am sure there will be plenty to peak my interest. |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
No. 1 - I've only been hunting deer for 3 yrs.....and I've tried to soak in EVERYTHING I could learn. I've been willing to try most every gadget and tool. SO....in this regard....I've gotten more and more "gadgety".
No. 2 - I see my use of these things (hunting-wise) lessening in the future. I think I see a day coming when I don't hunt with a compound for whitetails.......or turkeys. I already use my trailcams less than I used to. I won't carry a rangefinder to the woods, this year (and I'm not recommending this to anyone......I'm just stating that my 'effective range' is getting shorter and shorter.....to its' now 'no-brainer' status). I carry with me the following items to a hunt: Stand; bow; bow hook (and OK....a camera, this year). Not commenting on anyone else's way of doing things.....I just see a trend coming in my ways. It may or not be within 5 years. Maybe sooner....maybe later. Was wondering if anyone else felt this way. That is all. |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
5 years ago I didn't hunt and had no desire to.
5 years from now, I may feel the same way. I buy and do now, I'll worry about then when it comes. Until then, I'll just do what I can when I can. |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
1) I think I used more gadgets 5 years ago
2) I think I will be using a good GPS unit with built in contour lines....other than that I just like my treestand and bow! I am a pretty simple hunter. I would like to start trying some of those Montana decoys out this year to play around. |

RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
5 years ago I never used a back pack, now i have a full one.
I had 2 camo suits realtree@(orginal) and Advantage Timber I now have way to much stuff, but it's been fun:D Working for Cabelas expanded my supplies;) |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
5years ago no cabin, just started managing the property, Had to sleep in the truck or a tent. Laughed at taking a backpack.:DBareley used any calls.
5 years from know Might start hunting with a recurve. More land and more food plots. ORIGINAL: GMMAT No. 1 - 5 years ago....did you have/utilize less gear/gadgetry in your pursuits for deer than you do, now? No. 2 - 5 years from now....what do you predict you'll be doing (in this arena)? Explain? |

RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
5 years ago I was into the newest and fastest stuff out there, this gadget, that gadget, worried about this and that, to much goin on, I want it to be fun and simple. This year I'm going in the woods with Longbow in hand with 4 arrows in my quiver and sometimes a tree stand!;) I've turned over a new leaf and I really ENJOY it! :) I looking for more of a challenge within myself!:)

RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
1. 5 Years ago I was hunting with my Buckmaster 2000 (I was hot stuff:D) simple prong rest, and shooting feathers (). I was also 18, not very equipment savy (far from it now), and didn't have to have the latest and greatest (mostly because I couldn't afford it).
2. 5 Years from now will find me most likely shooting competitevly, hopefull establishing more do-it-yourself tools for Archery, but most likely not becoming super "gadgety". I will be taking a camera into the field a lot more as well (need to figure out what DSLR/lens setup I want soon). I also find myself slowly gaining more interest in habitat preservation/general food plot science. |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
I think I will be using a good GPS unit with built in contour lines... I'll also be switching arrows so that I can use Tracer nocks, or maybe now that Easton has bought the company they'll make a version that will fit A/C/C's. I enjoy the tolerances with the A/C/Cs, but I think there's other top-level offerings out there that will accomodate the Tracers, and I think that shooting them may be one of the biggest things I'm looking forward to in the near future. |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?

RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
Thats a good question, it made me think. In the past five years I have learned a ton, although the learning curve for the three years before that was much steeper. Despite all I have learned I still am using pretty much the same equipment...a slightly faster bow and now carbon arrown instead of aluminum, but all the basics are the same....plastic fletch, release, string loop, multi pin sight & peep, replaceable blade BH. I think I use calls somewhat less...and now I never use scents unless it is a fresh tarsal gland in the rut..I still use topos and aerial photos tho..overall I guess I am one of those who is using somewhat less gagets now, not more.
In five years...I probably will be a trad shooter, so I think that means even less gagets[&:] |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?

RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
5 yrs ago I was only gun hunting. And I was using fairly low tech means to do it. No treestands, old lever action, hand-me-down blaze orange.
5 yrs from now...I actually think I'll be back in the "low tech" hunting. I have an old recurve I've wanted to get shooting for a couple years. I still prefer the more simple things in hunting. IMO Scent Lok/Carbon suits, fancy soaps, some of the new bow technology is almost a waste of money and a paradox of what bowhunting is to me. To me, it should be a more primitive affair. The same goes with a lot of gun hunting. Sure I love the new firearms tech and I still love shooting my guns whenever I can. But does anyone honestly need a smoke pole that can shoot out to 250 yds? What about a rifle scope that has a built in rangefinder? Simply put, No.Just MO though. |

No. 2 - 5 years from now....what do you predict you'll be doing (in this arena)? Explain? My wife and i have a small familly so I can almost guarantee that 5 years from now I will be shooting my same bow as I am stillhappy with it..In afew months if the budget permitsI am looking to replace my old faded predator fall gray camo with some wolf skin fall brown predator from Gray Wolf Woolens.. My boots are 10 years old and I am sure I can easily squeeze another 5 out of them.. Can't beat Viberg boots. |
RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
Not really I have collected a few more stands and the one thing I have now is a range finder that works. Years ago I had some bad range finders, you had to split the image with a dial and take out the backlash, now it's just press a button.

RE: 5 years ago? 5 years from now?
I have more stuff now that I did 5 years ago, but I wouldn't place it in the gadget/gizmo category. It's more in the utilitarian, now I can afford good clothes/stuff category. :)I'm not a gadget/gizmo kind of person. I do have a rangefinder, but don't often use it. I use scents WAY less than before. Always have & always will use a grunt call. I'm at a mix as far as compound/trad gear goes.
In 5 years I could see it going to all trad gear, and make use of a GPS that I may add this summer. |
