Matt and Frank won the qualifying day for their class. Top scores each day qualify for the finals next weekend.

I'm shooting MBR. I hope to meet Matt / PA in the finals on Saturday if I win tomorrow. Not sure what Matt (RJ). If he shoots MBR, I hope to meet him in the finals as well. That'd be cool, all 3 of us in the finals Sat. Frank shot Hunter Class, he'll be in the finals on Sunday for his class.

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

Jeff:

It's a different format than most everything out there. Each day of the event, who ever posts high score for the day is qualified to compete in the finals event. Then in the finals event, there are 8 shooters that qualified in each class that shoot against each other, paired up with eachother to keep things honest........and then trophies are awarded for top 3 in the finals for each class. Rob, Matt and Iare shooting MBR class (45 yard max pins class), and Frank shot the money HC that competes for a money pot rather than a trophy.

Question about indoor shooting......

I know in our indoor shoots........we already know the distance from the front to the back. We also know the distance from corner to corner.

Once you go to a back, early target.....don't you know the yardage (pretty close, anyways) to the future targets? (if you're smart enough to step off on your return to the line)

Not sure how this one is set up.....but I know you could step off anything you wanted to in our indoor shoots.....and no one would be the wiser.

Rob/PA Bowyer 02-03-2008 06:49 PM

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

Jeff, most of the targets are up in the bleachers. Here's a picture I found.

Rob/PA Bowyer 02-03-2008 06:53 PM

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

There are cheaters here too Jeff. Guys will sit at the opposite side with a rangefinder and take notes. It's been know for guys to stand in the audience and range it and shoot the next day too. It's a damn shame.

GMMAT 02-03-2008 06:53 PM

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

Interesting, Rob......for sure.

But once you shoot one target on that level......don't you pretty much know that yardage?

I have NO experience shooting like this.......but does that make any sense?

Jeff:

This one is a bit more difficult than normal indoor 3D. You have to judge the distance to the wall in front of you, and then the distance on drastic uphill shots to where the targets sit in the bleachers. Not only do you have to judge distance, but you also have to know how to cut yardage for uphill angles. For example.......a 40 yard target you can't just shoot for 40 yards, you would likely end up with a high 8 or maybe even a 5. You have to learn how to compensate for this, and there is no way to really get prepared for that part of it.

This is a pic that shows what the course looks like so you can get an idea of the extreme angles:

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

Woops, looks like Rob beat me to it.

Also, if you know the distance, you can somewhat know the next target, but remember that after every end (2x arrows I think?) you pull those targets and then move down the line to the next shooting station. I think there were 14 spots to stand at through the line.

Here is another pic of the shooting line and crowd watching. You end up shooting from each position that you see a guys standing here, so that helps to mix things up quite a bit.

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

3, 10, 15, 20 and 24.......couldn't you "pretty much" figure them all as the same yardage?

Again....I have no idea....never shot anythinglike this. I can imagine......if you're not used to shooting these extreme angles....I'm not "sure" knowing the yardage would do you any good.

Rick James 02-03-2008 06:59 PM

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

Also...........knock em dead tomorrow Rob! I'm shooting MBR as well and will be shooting first thing on Saturday morning to try and qualify. Let me know how you do there tomorrow!

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

GMMAt, like RJ said. you shoot down the line and the targets are spread allover at different levels. The angles sometimes are nuts. And when you get to the finals they make it as hard as possible. Also you shoot up and back the line. It is challanging but fun to shoot. Oh and do not forget the 200 people lined up behind you at the fence talking and asking you "hey how far is tha elk?" etc. it is cool but sometimes annoying. because if you start shooting well you kinda get a little peanut gallery following you up and down the line.

What your not thinking of, is that the place you need to stand to shoot target 24, as compared to target 3, are 10+ yards apart. For each target you have to stand in a specific station that may be yards and yards apart. By time you get to target 24........you have shot 21 arrows and are waaay down the line from where you shot 3. Changes everything. You won't often find targets with close numbers next to eachother for this reason. You have to shoot each target from a specific spot......make sense?

It sounds like they go on daily winners????????? Is this right?

Rob/PA Bowyer 02-03-2008 07:06 PM

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

Jeff, yes, somewhat you are correct. You can always know the distance to the wall. And those on the same level will be close to the same yardage give or take a few as you rarely shoot straight on, it's from one side to the other but minus the incline, it's similiar to your old indoor range.

Congrats again Frank, that is some fantastic shooting. Last year I qualified for HC with a290.

And your definitely right about finals. Last year there was only 2 targets on the bottom level for HC finals, it was MUCH harder than the qualifying round. They had one turkey that was at max range in finals last year that was such an extreme angle if you went 1" hot on it, you would glance off into the bleachers.....lol. I played "safe" on that one and just stuck it low in the 8 ring on purpose just so I knew I would get foam on it.

Rob/PA Bowyer 02-03-2008 07:10 PM

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

Jeff, yes, daily winners only qualify for the finals. They did not win the overall shoot, just a place in the finals, daily winners are qualifiers only. Only first place moves on.

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

here's what I'm wondering, Rob.......

WHY wouldn't they take the best overall scores from the week.....REGARDLESS of which day it was shot? ISn't everyone shooting the same course?

Rob/PA Bowyer 02-03-2008 07:21 PM

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

Don't know, it's just how they do it and it's the only place I've seen it done. You could shoot higher on one day than all others except that one guy that beat you that day and not make the finals. You have to win your day to move on. It is what it is. That's why Matt, Matt and I didn't shoot on the same days. We'd be beating each other and knocking one another out before the finals.

Rob/PA Bowyer 02-03-2008 07:24 PM

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

Think of it as several single elimination shoots, only the winner moves on.

Cool. Thanks .....and good luck to you guys remaining!

RE: Congrats Matt / PA, Kidd642

The format is a bit strange to be honest. Last year I watched the scores through the week, and there were days when no one even shot in certain classes, and I'm sure there are days when there are quite a few VERY good shooters that compete at the same timeand knock each other out of qualifying. Then there are guys that shoot the course several times all week long, and finally hit it on a day when they can qualify.......I remember hearing guys on the line last year that said they had shot the thing 3-4 timesthat week and that it was their last chance to qualify (I qualified on the last shooting line for the entire week).

In the end though I love the fact that all the guys in thefinals are paired up and policing themselves. It at least brings some honesty to the finals event, and breaks up the buddy groups to help preventpencil whipping. It's really a very fun shoot and the show in general is an annual social GTG for me and all my old college buddies, it's the only time of the year I get to see a lot of them. I went to school just about 1/2 an hour south of there and worked in harrisburg for about 6 years, so it's a pretty cool trip for me.

RJ, it is for that exact reason why I changed claases from Matt. There were a couple years there were He and I shot on the same day and he and Iwere 1 2 and I was left holding the bag.
