How many actually pick a spot?
I was just wondering how many archers actually pick a spot on the deer when they shoot. I have to admit that I don't. I know where I want to hit and put my pin here and touch the trigger. ButI can't say that I study the deer and pick a tuft of hair to shoot at.

RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I hear it a lot, too....but I'm sure I don't do it.
I settle my pin....squint.....open both eyes (to make sure I'm centering the pin housing in the peep)....and expect my arrow to hit behind my pin. |
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I just try to put it behind the shoulder and let the Muzzy eat!
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I don't pick a spot i just hope to hit right behind the shoulder.
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
exactly
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I aim behind the shoulder and expect the arrow to hit there
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I have shot many deer without "picking a spot" but when I do, the arrow always goes to that spot. It's simply a matter of taking your shooting form and concentration to the highest level.
Training yourself to always pick a spot will improve your accuracy and we owe our game that comitment. |
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
If I don't pick a spot, I don't hit the target! No choice!:D
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
For the newER guys out there.....that spot "behind the shoulder" is misleading (IMO). The angle of the archerto the deer (both vertically and horizontally....in the case of a quartering shot) should dictate arrow path......and the path of the arrow through the vitals should dictate entrance point in EVERY scenario.
Simply stating that we aim "behind the shoulder" can be VERY misleading to the novice archer who hasn't taken into account a deer's anatomy. Just my .04......(.02 and .02, amended);) |
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
What the sam hill do you think that PIN is? That IS your spot. You just gotta make sure your spot is in the right spot before you release.

RE: How many actually pick a spot?
Off your meds again Arthur..:D
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
Which one is it today... The blue pill or the yellow one? :D
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
Just listen to the voices in your head they never steer you wrong.
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
Since I shoot a recurve instinctively I only hit thespot I look at or else I hit nothing. If I don't pick a small spot I'm just as apt to miss the entire deer.
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I pick a spot because for me, "if I aim big I miss big"...I aim small and I hit good. I zero in on a spot and fire!
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
Going further into what Arthur said (which I wholeheartedly agree with).....
What do you do after you pick that spot? If you put your pin there, then......you've covered up your spot. If you just put your pin there and shoot......you've accomplished the SAME THING. Now....in saying that.....GregH said something a while back that I also agree with. When that animal's coming in......PRE-pick a spot you think you'r egonna need to stick the deer....and focus on that spot. But when the moment of truth comes......I place my pin where i want my arrow to go.....and the "spot" IS my pin. |
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
That's a little to deep for me Jeff....;)
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I do, But I also believe it is from my days of shooting a recurve you have to pick a spot when you aim. So now I am always looking for a tuft of hair or something and that is what I aim for.. Walt

RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I have two pins on my site.Top one iswhere I want the arrow to go. The bottom is my "reference pin". I put the bottom pin in the arm pit of the deer. I move to the right and left if needed.
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I have to admit that I don't |
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
Charlie that just might be the reason....:D
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
GMATT is 100% correct about the angle of the shot, it's not always right behind the shoulder...
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I don't pick a spot.Knowing the deer's anatomy, I try to invision the path of the aarow. Can Istick it in the vitals?........... from my height in the stand and angle in reference to the deer is wht I am trying to determine when the deer is within range......................I'm not looking for a "spot"[:-]
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I try to shoot the ones that don't have spots, they're still too young.
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I can't imagine shooting if I didn't pick a Spot![&:]

Same thing just put a different way of explaining it. |
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I pick a spot while shooting my recurve.
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
i just put it right behind the shoulder
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I guess, but some have mentioned finding a tuff of hair or a dark spot on the deer to aim at when describing "picking a spot". |
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
Every animal I shoot, I pick a spot. Usually a grove in the muscle or a tuft of hair.Slinging arrows at an area is a horrible habit to get into. I pick my spot on the deer after planning the arrow passage through the animal. I pick the spot on the enterance that will insure the exit is where I want it. Everyone needs to pick a spot after calculating the path the arrow will travel through the animal. If not, you are going to have some bad shots that you will get to enjoy by tracking all day.

RE: How many actually pick a spot?
Slinging arrows at an area is a horrible habit to get into. Tell me Burnie....if your pin is oriented on the deer ....in a place that you want your arrow to enter....... Have you not picked a spot? |
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
Who does this???? |

Very well put, Burnie.

ORIGINAL: Charlie P Who does this???? Pick a spot guys, your luck will run out if your just aiming in a general area. Its hard to do when all you see is brown but it makes you focus, slow down a bit, and you will watch you game fall in sight. |
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
I pic a spot when he's on the way in but that goes to Sh#$ when he finally gets to the point I'm ready to pull the trigger and let the arrow fly, more or less aim in the zone and hope forhte double lung dance
|
RE: How many actually pick a spot?
On a broadside animal I aim at the crease behind the shoulder about 1/3 of the way up from the bottom.
If it is quartering away I try to visualize where this spot would be on the other side of theanimal and aim accordingly. |
