Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

Here was the Ally at 29". I always thought I was overdrawn a "little".

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

Here's the 82nd....at 28.5. I know it's gonna feel awkward for a while.....but the guy at the last shop I was in lst night.....said he thought I might be too short.

I take everything like that with a grain of salt.....but I wanted "Opinions" on what you thought looked better.

(OK....I am a USC fan....and the same shirt was on purpose...:))

Jeff you'll hear way better opinions than mine through-out the day.. But to me, you look natural with the longer Draw length. It looks easy and comfortable. (now how long is that stabilizer ;)).

GMMAT 02-01-2008 06:14 AM

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

GR8...It FELT more "natural", too.

Stab. is 11.5".....quick disconnect puts me in the "neighborhood;)" of 12".

You look overdrawn in the first pic, but it also looks like you have more bend in your bow arm in that pic than the others. The last pic looks like you might be a tad bunched up, but then again its all about how it feels to you. For what its worth, it looks like your "T" is just a hair better in the last pic.

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

What I think I see:

Not overdrawn. Just too much bend in the bow arm.

Too long.

Too short.

Switch releases. Use the wrist strap on the 82nd and stick with the thumb trigger on the Ally and you've got it made.

GMMAT 02-01-2008 06:32 AM

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

I don't have the Ally anymore, Arthur....:D

What if I just went to 29" on the 82nd and went with the thumb trigger?

I may try that.....and see. There's only 1/2" difference in DL between the two.

Jeff:

I'd agree as well w/ Arthur. At least for target purposes, you do look a bit short now, but not on the back end. Your anchoring great, etc.........but that front arm has a LOT of bend in it now and most people would have a tough time supporting their form bone on bone like this. Now there are some great shooters out there that can, but the majority of people would have a tough time.

If you really feel like tearing things apart with your form right now, I'd try extending that forearm a bit, but keeping the string in the same position. You may be somewhere between the 28.5" and 29" mods as well, which you can accomodate by adding equal twists to both cables. When I was shooting binary cams still, I was usually able to tweak draw length by as much as 3/8" or so without swapping mods. This will affect your letoff though........it will increase your letoff if you add twists to those cables.

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

Also Jeff, to give you some perspective of how sensitive DL is, if my loop length is off by even a 1/8"...........I'll see a noticable difference in scores. Sometimes as little as a 1/8" difference is going to make a world of difference in your holding pattern......and in helping you find that spot in your form where you can hold with no tension at all anywhere but your back. That's the spot you want it........not your shoulders, arms, etc......

and most people would have a tough time supporting their form bone on bone like this.
Thanks for checking in, Matt.

What do you mean by the above statement? I do know that I feel like I'm having to hold a LOT of the draw weight with the shorter DL. It doesn't fell "right". But I guess I may just not be used to it "right".

If you were me.....would you do what i suggested (going to 29" and using the Carter).....or would you try extending the bow arm, first?

Thanks to all for your opinions.

Extending my bow arm will change my anchor. That'll take a lot of getting used to I suppose.

Is that the new Ron Jeremy stabilizer?

On a more serious note; I’m pretty ignorant to setting up bows. Which one shoots the best, I think could be a deciding factor. Any differences?

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

I don't own the Ally any more, KP. I sold it after my last 3D shoot, Sunday.

I've only shot one Vegas round with the 82nd....and it started out great and ended up poor.

Something just doesn't "feel right". Hard to explain.

Are you a feel player or a mechanical player. (no particularsport~cross referencing ;) [:-])

To me you look a whole lot more comfortable with the Alley. Are these measured draw lengths or manufacturer stated? In the second 2 you look like you're leaning your head back. Maybe it's not so much a draw length thing but more a form change. I don't see any of them as too long or too short, just bent out of shape.

GMMAT 02-01-2008 07:07 AM

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

DEFINITELY a "feel" player. If I "think" mechanics....I'm done.

Good luck man, I'm sure with the help you've got here, it won't be long before it "feels" better.

Jeff,
I think your bow arm is bent to much in all the pictures. I think the draw length looks the best in the last picture. But if you straighten your arm up you will need to lengthen the draw some. One thing I was always told is that if you hit your bow arm with the string then your draw length is to long. But I don't know if you wouldsee thatthe way your arm is bent.

Are these measured draw lengths or manufacturer stated?
Mfr. stated.

In the case of the Ally.....that bow was nearly one yr old in the photos....and I might have had soem string creep......thus making my DL even longer. A new 29" DL might be the ticket.

I DO have to lean my head back a bit with the new DL/bow to see through the peep. that might also be atributable to a form flaw. I honestly don't know. Complete novice in this arena.

GMMAT 02-01-2008 07:13 AM

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

Not that it makes any difference....(as I don't know)......but if I straighten out my arm....the string's gonna be off my nose (with the shorter DL). I know that's not imperative....but I'd lose a point of reference.

If I extend my bow arm....where's that gonna put me anchoring? it would "seem" it's gonna have me hanging out there.....with way less reference.

Interesting, for sure.

MC Bowhunter 02-01-2008 07:21 AM

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

The peep sight is your rear point of reference.

I think it's too long. But set it up where you are most comfortable.
Try the shorter draw length and see if you group better then when it's longer.

I think you will be happier with the shorter dl for hunting. Especially when you start bulking up the layers of cloths.

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

Id have to switch to the 29 D/L if i wanted to keep shooting the thumb release.(jmo) if i dident care what realese i was shooting then i would try the wrist strap first.

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

Valid points TeeJay and Dan......but I'm setting this one up "primarily" to shoot targets and 3D.....if that makes a difference. I may or may not hunt with this bow come Sept.

If I do hunt with it.....I could always switch back (no pun intended, Teej...lol) to the 28.5" mods and use the wrist strap.

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

Changed to 29" mods during lunch.....and it feels a LOT better. I don't have a photo....but we'll see how it goes.

Thanks for all of your input(s).

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

I like your new anchor point. I like the string to touch the tip of my nose. Now I don't know about everyone else, but I completely extend my left arm, (with the thought of my palm facing down) no bend. I never get any string contact, maybeI am just lucky but I find this to be very a repeatable draw.

I think adding your 1/2" on draw will be just about perfect when you straighten out your arm.

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

Jeff you are a better shot than me, and I am no archery coach, so take my opinion as just that - opinion. I've learned strictly by trial and error and these forums.

But I also think the DL looked too short in ALL the pics. I think if you straightened that bow arm you might actually be a tad longer than 29" with the same face anchor points.

I used to have alot of arm bend and I noticed that I got fatigued very quickly because I was using "small muscles". When I straightened my arm out (just shy of completely straight) I found myself much more steady at full draw which made me much more accurate, and I didn't get tired nearly as quickly. It's the "bone on bone" contact that people talk about.

Not only am I more steady with the "straight arm", but I was able to increase my DL up to 29.5" and gain a little speed along with the accuracy I gained.

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

You might just try tying a longer loop.I think your release elbow is working out, toward the camera but hard to tell from the pic.You can definately straighten the arm more imo as well.

It is easy to get the anchors on your face that you want, just lower or raise your hand a bit and you will be there depending on which way you go.

You really need to work on your hips as well, they are pushed forward or you are leaning back, that is where you need to start before messing with the draw length, get that fixed and it might fix all the draw length issues you are experiencing.

RE: Same guy....different bows...DL "Opinion"

Forget the peep is on the bow, stand in front of a mirror and get the posture corrected and get the head in a comfortable position before you do anything to the draw length.

Then once you are standing straight up with the head in the proper position for you, then adjust the BOW to FIT YOU.

I don't think your question about bone to bone contact was answered.I refer to it as shoulder load and just makes more since to me but all it is is bringing the shoulder back into the socket when at full draw.Just have to make sure it loads back and doesn't load UP.If your shoulder is coming up,that can cause injury and fatigue.

Maybe matt can explain it better.
