Bag targets.....All the same?
Who uses one...and who loves the one they have? Ever get an arrow that passes through?
|
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
I've used most of them. I own 2 Outdoor Range bags now from Morrell (one at camp, one in the basement) and think they are truly the best "bag" type out there. We also have them from 10 to 50 yards at the club I belong to as well, and they usually last an entire season there before needing to be changed, and that's with a club w/ 600 members.
My bag in the basement is only a month old or so, and it holds up pretty well. It will occasionally have an arrow poke out the back though, but you gotta remember that I'm shooting it at 10 yards, with a vegas face pinned on it, and drilling 40-45x's ever game I shoot........all with 500+ grain indoor arrows. That's bound to mess any target up. I move the target a bit about midway through each game and that keeps the poke throughs to a minimum. |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
I've got 2 medium price range bags now and both are pretty much crap after less than a year. I'm going to be purchasing Morrell from now on. My buddy has had his for 2 years now and it's holding up very well.

Matt:
How do you have your bag set up indoors? What's it hanging on? I suppose I could just hang something down from the floor joists. These bag targets are WAY cheaper than the block type targets.....and I' just looking for something to shoot FP's into. |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
Our club - nowhere near 600 members! [:-]- also went with Morrell Outdoor Range bags. We've had them aboutsix yearsand they're great. When a bag starts shooting through, just throw it on the ground and stomp the snot out of it to redistribute the stuffing and it's good to go. Every year we buy replacement bags and rebag them, and it's real easy to do.Justslide the target - old bag and all -into the new bag and close it up with zip ties.Give them a good stomping to redistribute the stuffing and hang 'em up. Unless you are shooting as much as an entire archery club, a cover should easilylast you several years. The target itself should last a lifetime.

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
I have been using a WALMART block for two years. It has thousands of arrows through it.
I have a ratchet strap around it. When it gets shot up, I tighten the strap and it closes the foam back up. |

Basically J-hooks into the floor joists though, and then the bag tied to these so that the middle of the bag is just below chest height, I also have a cheapo flour shop light wired in just above it. Works perfect. |

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
Thanks, Matt! (and everyone else)!
This looks like a REALLY inexpensive way to handle my indoor shooting needs.....besides the layered rubber target I'm now using....that KILLING me to pull arrows out of. It's a great Rage practice head target.....but it's hell on FP tipped arrow removal. |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
Bag targets are a great way to go for FP's. Much better than any block target for more reasons than one;)

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
I've always used Morrell bags, and they are great. Very durable and for the price, you are WAY ahead versus buying a Block type target IMO. I also shoot inside at close range, and chewed up a Block in a couple weeks to where the arrows were going nearly completely through. The Morrell bag has lasted nearly 6 months with the same abuse, and no real ill effects.

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
The Yellow Jacket is the best I've seen. Good luck wearing that baby out. ;) Keep it (or any bag target) off the ground to avoid soaking up moisture.

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
Jeff im thinking mine was a blue ridge, it was a cheap one lasted a long time but now has weakspots in it. I have heard nothing bad about the morell. I use a block target in my basement, they are ok if you weight the top of them, if you dont they scoot sideways when you shoot the other dots, i mounted my bag target on an aluminum frame, but it tends to swing on impact when suspended.

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
I have two morrell bag targets and love em'. I think my next buy will be a Glendale Buck.

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
i bought mine at Dick's sporting goods called the "carbon giant" its got reinforced sides(feels like it might be that stiff plastic cardboard type stuff) and filled with mostly cotton from what i can tell...
it stood up for 2 full seasons now...i cant imagine how many arrows from me alone..plus ive had buddies shoot it many times... when i buy a new one, it will be one i KNOW i can get a replacement cover for. thats the only part that wears out. mine wore out so i started shooting the back...filling came out the hole in the front and i started to bury arrows real deep...never had a pass through, but had to pull many from the back. my temperary fix?? silt fence. made out of a similar weaved material...i wrapped it in it and used a staple gun to staple into the sides...put a couple layers on...worked pretty well...needs redone...good thing i brought home a ton of silt fence...asked the boss what we did with the stuff i was ripping down and he said throw it out back at the shop...asked if i could take it...he said sure.... heres a pic takes alot of shooting to wear out a bag with a decint cover on it...lots of room to shoot at, and the way the bag is weaved lets alot of arrows in without making a hole... for fieldpoints, i dont usually shoot anything but my bag...arrow removal is stupidly easy.... |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
what about a bale of cardboard boxes fresh out of the compactor, has anybody ever tried that??

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
Another vote for the Morrell Outdoor Range target. I have had one for over a year that gets shot by 5 people on a daily basis and it is holding up great. I'll need a new cover soon, but the target itself is fine.

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
thats probably my group im most proud of Tony. almost posative that was 40yds. if not it was 30 for sure...dont ask my why the arrow holding up the bow has a broadhead on it(know i wasnt shooting BHs at my bag...maybe i was fine tuning that day and BH tuning)
...yep, a tad low and a hair left for sure...nother proud moment is hitting that same bullseye at 67yds on my 3rd arrow...had a ton of spectators that day..it was at a fun shoot at a 3d shoot other 2 arrows fell just low...3rd i put right in the center...the guys were amazed...a punk 20yo kid shooting a hunting bow drilled it while the bigshots wouldnt even fling an arrow at it...funny how much lower my arrows fell..pretty sure i had atleast a 50yd pin dialed in, maybe even my 60...that 17 or 7yd difference was a good foot or so of arrow drop....just runs outta gas when you get out that far.. |

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
I have the Outdoor Range from Morell as well. Suspended outside with two ratchet straps around a roofed in stand. Keeping the bag suspended helps with energy absorption imho. I've never buried an arrow even up to half the length of the shaft yet after ~8 months of use.

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
I use the 'Rag Bag' from Third Hand Archery. I love it. Simply fill it with old cloths and forget about it. It is light enough to shoot outside during the summer, and move it in the basement for some winter shooting. I haven't sent thousands (and thousands) of arrows at it without a passthrough. And you can't beat the price.
If the thing ever wears out, I wouldn't hesitate to get another one. JMO of course. |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
I have one called the Pro Magnum I've owned for several years. Not even sure if the company who made it still exists anymore. Best bag target I've ever seen anywhere. I finally broke down and bought a Morell because I cannot find one like my old one....not the range target but the one under it. Not a bad target but not nearly as good as my old one was.
IMO a good bag target is the only way to go for shooting field points! As in most things you have to spend more money for a good bag target. The cheap ones are little more than junk. |

Cougar, I have a Pro Stop Magnum and it is a great bag target. I tried to order one for a customer the other day and didn't have any luck. If they are not around anymore that's a Shame Dan |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
There's also the redneck bag target.... Save up all the plasticbags your wife brings home from WalMart and stuff 'em tight into a burlap sack. Works just fine, only the burlap wears out pretty quick compared to the synthetics. But then when the burlap wears out, wrap it up in some of that silt barrier that mauser06 used. Then you'd have an uptown redneck bag target. ;)

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
Jeff, I've had my Morrell Range bag for nearly 8 years now. I shoot through it (fletch through first side) depending on where I hit it consistantly with the Alli and 82nd but no other bow has done that.
I rotate it and adjust it and it's good again. I do have a broadhead target behind it in the house to be sure, outside it doesn't matter and stops ALL arrows. |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
I have to say Morrell bags are the best!
They make them right up the road from me.I go get there 2nd's.You know the bullseye might be off center or something. But abag will be like 10$.And if you have a bag that needs Rewraped they do it forfree. |

RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
Morrell makes great targets but I think that spiderweb targets will be the field point target that will actually last a lifetime.
Evenseveral 425 grain bolts at 400+ fps from a Stryker crossbowshot from10 feet only gets about 4 - 6 inches of penetration. http://spyderwebtargets.com/ |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
bigbulls beat me to it... it's what they use at the Bowtech factory... I think they got 55,000 shots on their last one?
I picked up two of these for my personal use at the ATA show. |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
Guys w/ Spyderweb experience.......
It's my understanding that the smaller 24x24 model would not be friendly for spot shooting, that it would be difficult to attach a target face to it, and that it may cause the arrows to kick out of it at odd angles. Is this correct? Is there a different cover on the large model as compared to the smaller model? I almost bought one of these, but I shoot a LOT of indoor spots games in my basement and I needed something that would be condusive to this.......... Any thoughts? |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
Don't know yet, Matt... as they were so heavy (I can't imagine anything more solidly built... talk about DENSE!!!!) I threw them in the back of one of our Bowtech trailers and I'll actually get them when I work the Il Deer & Turkey Expo next month, as I was flying back from Indy...
I think I got both the small and the large models, so I can let you know after that :) |
RE: Bag targets.....All the same?
How are they for arrow durability? Stopping an arrow that hard can't be good for arrows? (thinking out loud, sorta like shooting into a tree);)
