There's nothing saying you can't have fun even if you didn't get anything............but we are all out there for a reason and if it doesn't happen then yes we have failed in our task to some degree. That can differ from person to person. Some might pass 100 deer hoping for 1 and eat a tag if they don't see it.......and others might hunt like crazy an not even get a shot opportunity. Both guys "failed" in their goal but hopefully they had a great time along the way and learned something for next year.
We are out to kill deer..........if you don't then you came up short of your goal. Not the end of the world and will happen to everyone more then once.
I can't remember the last time I didn't kill a deer................If my brothers and dad whacked a few already I'm not sure I would care at all........If the freezer was empty I would freak out!!!

Reasons Differ
I for one would be pleasantly happy even though I can spend 60 days aloft in a popular tree 20 feet up with out filling a tag. We all have different goals while afoot in the bush tracking America's #1 game.
I 1st started out hunting, I was enthralled with the thrill of sending an arrow to it's mark, now I'm just as thrilled only to get close to the 170 inch plus buck that I'm so lucky to have around. To match witts with one and outsmart them is another story. I have gone 3 yearsupto this season with out taking a buck and took abuck I would never have even raised my bow for this season.I filled my sons freezer for him, albeit a small freezer.
So to feel ashamed or upset about not taking an animal,I would say no becausewe get to see what so many people miss while in the comfort of their home. That is God's creation and the dead silence that we all need.To tell you the truth,I feel it is just as big a task of taking aim with a camera on a good buck at 60 yards as it is of bringing home the meat for the table. Just my thought.

Its nice to get one deer in the freezer, saves on buying beef. I'm not heart broke though if I go without, thats why its called hunting and not getting!

The pressure increases as the season goes on. I would feel like I failed if I didn't shoot at least a doe. I would feel sorry for the chipmunk I take my aggression out on at the end of the season.

Dan, I hear ya
those darn chipmunks!!!The season before this past one, I got skunked for the first time in over a dozen years .... now I'm talking not one deer with ANY weapon ..... and it was BECAUSE I failed somewhere .......either I missed, or got busted in the tree, or target panic ..etc.
Here's the deal ....My family and myself LOVE LOVE LOVE deer meat, and we all look forward to at least 2 deer in the freezer .... always try to get 4 ..... I have to say, in the few years I didn't take at least one deer ...... I could always put my finger on several things and say, " If only I woulda _______________"

I can't say I feel like a failure.... I buck hunt with my bow... there in meaning I try and exclusively shoot bucks with my bow... But, gun season opens up, I get ancy cause I want to hunt something else besides deer, so, if I don't shoot a buck with my bow, I'll shoot a doe, like this year, with my 870 to make burger and feed wife and kid the yummies I can't buy at the store.
Here's some of what I'll be snacking on Super Bowl Sunday.... She's already served up a kick ass bowl of chili on christmas eve.

After all the point is to put meat in the freezer and since most areas can do with less does, not killing one is indeed a dissapointing season.
