Let's cut the crap......I'm cold!

Ok guys, I guess I'm just a southern weenie, but I can't handle the dang cold weather! And I know 30 degrees isn't cold to most of you, but that is dang cold for here!

Now, I'm good on the stand for up to 3 hrs, maybe 3.5...... But when I start putting in those long, 4-5 hour sits, I get dang right cold! Shaking cold......can't shoot a bow cold......

Here is what I had on this past weekend and still got cold!

Top:
Under Armour Cold Gear
Another layer of cold gear
Duofold thermal underwear
Thin wool shirt
Insulated Grey Wolf wool vest
Warm knit sweater

Bottom:
Under armour cold gear
duo fold underwear
thin pants
unlined wool pants from Grey Wolf

In addition, wool hat and face mask....

Now, I packed all this gear in to make sure I didn't sweat.....

Like I mentioned, up to 3hrs, no problem.....4+hrs.....big problem.....

What am I missing here?

And money really isn't an issue...... I want to know what will keep me warm ALL DAY in temps from 20-30....which is a low as we get....

When it's cold here, 20-30, I'll wear 4 layers top and bottom including my rain gear as the outside layer, 2 pairs of socks and 800g boots. If it's windy, something to cover my face and ears.

Do a google for Justin Charles wool. It's a merino wool base layer that I've read is fantastic! It's on my list for next year. I think the UA stuff is great if your active but don't put to much stock in it if I'm sitting. My .02 Also try some type of wind barrier jacket, Grey wolf makes one.

that heater body suit they have in all the mags might work. here's the link www.heaterbodysuit.com Make sure you don't have to many layers. Personally I only wear thermal underwear and my coat and bibs. Something about better circulation keeping you warm. I don't know but it works for me.

RE: Let's cut the crap......I'm cold!

I'm from just out west of Chicago. Maybe not the coldest place, but it can get pretty rough. So for what it's worth:

-You seem to have quite a few layers on. Are they too tight? If so, that's no good. Your clothes should be loose to hold a layer of air around you.

-Are some of those layers cotton? You shouldn't wear any, synthetics or wool are the only options. Cotton holds water and can make you freeze.

- The hardest time to stay warm is when you are stationary like when you're sitting in a deerstand.Clothes that kept you warm when you were moving might not when you sit still.

-A good layer of protection on your head and neck is very important. You lose more heat from these areas than anywhere else. A good wool hat and a gaiter around your neck could change everything if you haven't been protecting these areas.

- A wind proof layer can also make a big difference. Wind cutting through your clothes will carry off all your heat.

- Your boots should be loose too. Tight boots will freeze your feet. Back in the old days, railroad workers wore those black rubber boots with thebig clasps on them all winter long. The kind we wore as kids, that are meant to go over your shoes. Those are just cheap bootsbut if you got big ones that lefta layer of air around yourfeet, they kept you warm. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars, you need to keep your boots loose and your head protected.

- Don't sweat up on the way to your stand or the water evaporating will keep stealing heat from you as you sit. Attach your coat to your pack as you walk and only put it on when you get there.

- Two thin layers are usually better than one thick one. This is the idea of layering, although I have used some heavy garments that held a lot of air and were very warm.

- When it gets cold and windy I wear two layers of wool underwear under an insulated outer layer. The kind that is like terry cloth is the best long underwear made in my opinion. Some wool smells like a manegy dog when it gets wet. I think the Justin Charles stuff is like that for some reason. The stuff from Ullfrotte ismade like terry cloth, is very warm, and doesn't smell. I am going to start carrying their products, probably this season but you can find it on a number of sites till then.

- I think the warmest outer layers are a coat and bibs rather than coveralls. With a coat and bibs you end up with a double layer on your midriff. Also, your outer layer needs to block the wind.

Well, the season is over here in Illinois. I'm jealous that you're still out there. So stay warm and good hunting!

LOL DC Back in Nov we were praying for the 30's to kick up the rut a little. That's warm for us now. ;)

Layering is where it's at. If there is one bad ass outside layer, I've never found it.

I usually wear thermal underwear and my insulated pants that are wind and water proof. And for my upper body i were light t-shirt then put my kidney belt on with 2 large hot hand packs in then my scent lock and then the inside layer of my rocky 2 piece parka along with mywool hat drop in a couple ofhot hands into my gloves i use the boot ones with the sticky side and put them on top of my hand rather than in my palm usally can sit for most of the day just change out warmers in my gloves and dry socks if needed i wear 1000 gram high-top boots to keep my feet warm

RE: Let's cut the crap......I'm cold!

Double Creek,

You didn't mention if there was much wind. I find I can layer and be ok at 10 degrees or so most of the day. I carry those hamdwarmers and use them alot. However, if I get a little wind i get cold much faster. So I may only last half as long or even less even in warmer weather 20-30 degrees. If you can block the wind off you it helps a bunch. Wet weather gear usualy works pretty good for the outside.

JMHO

Good luck.

I found something in a Cabelas catalog a few years back that for some reason I haven't bought yet... A heated vest. I take advantage of the heated socks I bought two years ago, and now they have it in a vest. Wear that as a middle layer and I can't see someone freezing out. Seems to me it was right around $70.

RE: Let's cut the crap......I'm cold!

Once it gets cold I keep an insulated one piece shuit in my pack & an insulated bib overalls plus an XX large cammo sweatshirt.
I'll wear regular cotton thermals under insulated pants & a tee shirt plus an insulated flannel shirt with a hood, the hoods important.
Once I get to wherever I'm hunting if its over 25 or 30 & not windy I just put the suit on over my clothes. If its windy I'll pull the hood up & put on a cammo hat over it.
If its cold, under 25 or so and/or windy & nasty I put the bib on over the suit & pull on a sweatshirt mostly to cover the buttons on the straps (I'm paranoid about hooking them when I dump the string) Anyway, bundled up like that I can sit when its 10 degrees for hours & hours. Its the layers & haveing them fit right.
If its warmer out I'll skip the long johns or insulated pants/shirt but the suits a must have once its chilly. I'll wear it over shorts & a tee shirt in late fall.

If your not careful tho you can severly restrict your mobility & wont be able to shoot. I'm cheap & none of my stuff is expensive. Its Sportsmans Guide stuff but it fits well so I can move right. The bibs are huge if I'm not in the suit & the suit is just big enough for me with the stuff I mentioned.
It works excellent unless it rains. Then I go in a blind. ;) honestly I hunt mostly from pop ups this time of year anyway.

These walked by me Friday. :D

RE: Let's cut the crap......I'm cold!

Two words DoubleCreek: Hot Hands! Man, I am a cold natured anyway and this cool snap we have had is tough. I however started using the Hot Hands last season when it dropped to 22deg one morning. My boots were frozen to my Summit platform.(Literally) I usually will put 2 Hot Hands handwarmers in my coat pockets (2 ea pocket), or the waist muff. I will put 2 ea Toasti Toes warmers on my socks.(1 on top and 1 on bottom) I will also put 1 ea of the Body Warmers in my Cargo pockets of my bibs. The trick to these things is to open them and just lay them out in the open for 15 to 20 minutes, then place them in your pockets or on your feet/body. This, along with layers will keep you on stand longer than you probably want to stay.

I like a good waterproof/windproof bib and parka. Fleece pullover, fleece pants, insulated thermal underwear. you may want to try the insulated fleece but I dont need itaccept on really cold days in TN 10 degreesor worse. Keep the clothing loose not tight to help trap air.

just use lots of layers. I was hunting coyotes in -5 this weekend. Did not see a darned thing either...... just lots of layers, and make sure your clothes fit like they are supposefd too.

A tent blind and a little buddy heater will solve everything. [8D] Other then that.....I stay toastie with cabelas down filled long under wear as base layer.

RE: Let's cut the crap......I'm cold!

The best thing I've found for long/all day sits in the cold are the ThermaCareback warmers designed for low back pain. I put it on over my UA layer once I'm settled into the stand and I'm toasty as long as it is. It keeps the kidneys warm and I think that is the key. The other thing you can use is one of the ThermaCare neck warmer for neck pain. Keeping your neck warm is also very important. Doing this will help cut down the layers and you'll be comfortable without all the shivering.

Don't mean to pick on you Southern guys, but did you see the football game last night? Guys with NO shirts in -1 F weather for three hours? It is all mental. (And, yes, THEY are all mental, as well!)

About a week ago, you may have noticed that the nation's low temperature was Alamosa, Colorado; at 32 below zero (no wind chill factored in). I was up there for a late season elk hunt that morning - and waiting in the dark for legal shooting hours. Dressed pretty much like you did - but had a Gore Tex hooded parka and Gore Tex bibs. Also was wearing the LaCrosse -100 arctic boots. There is still the hands/face frostbite issue, but generally I was warm. Used the Heat Factory stuff inside the gloves.

My buddy has a receptacle hitch hoist that we used to lift the elk into the back of his truck. My ungloved hands froze fast to the steel hoist. Lost some skin getting them free. [8D]

I didn't read thru all the pages, so maybe someone else mentioned. Day One Camo insulated parka and bibs with wind stop. You cannot walk in this stuff. Put it on once in the stand. 20 degrees and up, I probably never even put the parka on if I have a heavy poly top on.

Under Armour has a parka that I took a serious look at this year, but funds would not allow for it. A real spendy piece, but I've had good luck with all UA products. http://www.underarmour.com/outdoor/ Armourstealth extreme cold parka.

Rocky heated insoles

You're on the right track with layering, these are about all you could add that might help. One thing to remember about where you live is the humidity, 30 degrees in high humidity is just as miserable as a much lower temperature in drier conditions.

Cold Weather System by Red Head at bass pro. I bought the3 piece parka and bibs and am very happy with it. I wear it when it's cold (i mean real cold -10 to -20 not 30 for christ sake [8D]j/k) and it is warm as warm can be. The only layer I wear underneath is underarmour. Sometimes maybe underarmour and a light long sleeve shirt or turtle neck. That's it. I'm not a fan of a zillion layers. I feel like the abominal snowman with 4 or 5 layers. This setup gives me warmth and mobility. Keeping your feet warm is key for me too. 1600 gram rubber boots. If my feet get cold it migrates through my body. With a good face mask, gloves, boots, and the CWS by Red Head I can sit in -20 cozy for along time.

30 degree weather I would recommend somelight weight pants a long sleeve shirt and take a fleece along with you in case it gets colder.:D

RE: Let's cut the crap......I'm cold!

Just layer it up. And by the way, at 30 degrees up here we're waiting for the greens to thaw so we can go play golf. LOL Put on a nice wicking layer, then a layer of smart wool long underwear. If you're real cold natured put on another layer like Cabelas Expedition weigh undies. Throw on a wool shirt and cover that with another heavier wool shirt and you'll be fine. Same stuff on the bottom. Socks and boots are most important. Carry a balaclava to keep your head and neckwarm. If it gets sure enough cold then you have to start carrying chemical hand warmers etc.

I do not know if it will help your specific situation but a little trick I have found with those handwarmers......

..pick up a few packs of the toe warmers. Insert iton the outside of your closest layer (underwear). They have adhesive on one side of the warmer so it stays in place. I typically place mine on my back just below the base of my neck and inside of my shoulder blades. It works flippin' wonders.

As being from the south I can help you with this one. I go to KS every year when the highs are in the teens. Hands downthis will also keep you warm up to the 30's. You can also shoot a bow just fine with it on trust me I shoot one at 40 yards with all of this garbage on.

Tops
underarmor fleece lined
apex performance fleece shirt
camoe cotton shirt

bottoms
underarmor fleece lined
apex performace fleece bottoms
camo pants

and to top it all off a set of gortex 200 grain insulated coveralls

gloves
underarmour release gloves
stick your hand in your pockets if they get cold or use a fleece hand muff I think it gets in my way so i dont use it unless I rifle hunt

underarmour face mask
fleece beanie

feet
800 gram insulated alpha bulry sports
bps wool socks
andif your feet get cold but on a set of heater toes

Pack most of it in like youall ready do. Itmakes for a bad trip if you arewet with sweet. You will always be cold if you sweet.

Ok for all you tough guys making fun of me getting cold down here in 20-30 degree weather...... here is a quote from Gary Clancy, outdoor writer

"And being a Minnesota native, I always thought that anyone who complained about being cold while hunting south of the Mason-Dixon was a real wimp. Wrong again! I recall in painful detail a mid-December hunt in Mississippi, when I would have gladly traded my bow for a Heater Body Suit"

I see the smiley face there but if you're even 1% serious, remember the human body is still the human body whether in 0 or 30 degree weather. Once body temperatures drop to a preset level, you feel cold. I don't think there's any "used to" -or- "not used to the cold".

Anyway, someone mentioned that the layers can't be too tight. First reason for that is the obvious that you want layers of air to insulate. Secondly, I've experienced that if something is too tight, say for example like afewpairs of socks, it'll limit blood flow and make you cold. Blood brings heat so in that situation, 2 pairs is warmer than 3 pairs.

The other thing to not neglect is head and neck wear. About half of your heat loss occurs there. A decent qualityski mask made a night and day difference for me this year even in 5 degree weather.
