Sorry Jeffery. ( I wasnt being a smarty just very polite.:))
"Why would I want to move from a spot that's produced 2 mature bucks on my wall in as many years? " ORIGINAL: GMMAT I can answer the last one, because you are not targeting mature bucks. Lost me.....again. Jeff, But are you targeting mature bucks..[/blockquote] Nope...I said that WAYY back there. And I know what the next statement will be...... "Yeah...but that's what this thread is about". I'm not SPECIFICALLY targeting mature bucks. Nope. |

RE: Targeting Mature Bucks
Fraley....I still don't get it....but I said earlier....that there ARE times (a few sits per season) where I am targeting a mature buck. Both times I've been successful at taking one.....are good examples of these few times.
I had a "pretty good" idea that these guys were gonna be where they were the day I shot them. hence the area I chose to hunt, those days. But for me to go out in October and say I am targeting a mature buck, today......that's never happened. If I ever shoot one here before November....it'll be because he happened by.....and NOT because I was targeting that animal that day. My '06 8 pointer.....I watched him from afar until I had a pretty good idea of where he was going to be. Then I moved in (over a week). Is this unusual? |

RE: Targeting Mature Bucks
I have two stands around my house, that I hunt. IT is about 175 acres. The deer get pressured behind me by my neighbors and a hunting club. THe land beside me is filled with poeple who love to ride four wheelers and dirt bikes. Then my two stands are surrounded by bedding areas, water sources and food sources. One is a very large hay feild on one side and a cow pasture on the other. I hunted there about 10 times this year, and tried not to pressure it. I had never seen a mature buck there, until this year. I hade him very close one time, but couldnt get him to step out, with the does. The other one is a wide open feild that they are always in beside water and a grown up cut down. I killed a 10 point out of there this year, saw two more 8 pointers, a 9 pointer, and a few sixes. I hunted this spot 3 times this year with one of those being successful.:D

RE: Targeting Mature Bucks
ORIGINAL: GMMAT Jeff find yourself some bedding areas and you have complete puzzle;) If I recallthe park system there is no hunting allowed(where they bed). I can tell you that is ideal in my book. Snuggle up as close as you can;) For a big portion of the season.....I catch them in transition areas that they come out into before they bed down for the day.....catching that last little browse bite. When the mast crops fall, though.....it's Katie bar the door. I'm set. The 3 sides with the ag crops are spent....and I sit on the prime feeding grounds. It's not a bad place or WAY to hunt. It's just a little unorthodox. I'm not unhappy with it. I wait my turn.;) |
RE: Targeting Mature Bucks
These mature buck threads have become more like watching a rookie give Randy Ulmer shooting lessons.
