RE: Targeting Mature Bucks

Jeff, But are you targeting mature bucks..
Nope...I said that WAYY back there. And I know what the next statement will be......

"Yeah...but that's what this thread is about".

I'm not SPECIFICALLY targeting mature bucks. Nope. BUT....I have a damned good idea of where the ones in my area WILL be.....at a certain point in the season. I still wouldn't say when I go to the woods.....that I'm targeting mature bucks.....more than 8-10 sits in an entire year (and quite probably LESS sits than that).

Suppose there are no "mature" bucks in your forty acre woods next year. What changes will you make in your efforts?
Well....I suppose if you wanna make it like I'm only hunting deer that roam over 40 acres....I'm gonna look pretty silly hunting mature bucks in there. FACT is....I know I'm hunting deer that range at least a square mile (The bucks.....as they've been photo'd by friends that far away;)). So.....when all the mature bucks in a square mile get killed.....I'm **** outta luck for a year or so.

Unless I change my location.;)

But being unwilling to move to a better area does not mean that my tactics will not work.
Again....show me where I said this. I said your tactics were sound! I also said I wish I could hunt that way.

I wish you'd stop trying to make this controversial.

why don't you tell us what tactics you used that were successful for you.

I did. First post.;)
Jeff,

Wow, are you having cramps?

If you wish you could hunt this way, you'd find a spot that would allow for it. By stating that you wish you could makes it sound as if it's impossible for you to do so.

Successful mature buck hunters don't sit around in spots that are extremely limited and wish. They go out and find something more productive.

Something don't add up here........ You see a ton of deer from your stands. Usually when deer move it is either to bed or to eat. They have to be going by you or else you're seeing them off of your land. Also, bucks eat the same food as the does, you should be seeing them. If you only see mature bucks during the rut, you're severely limiting yourself. Time for a new spot.

I don't think Jeff really knows what he's got.

In 2006 you got a shot at the Bull late Sept
In 2006 Jeff shota mature deer
In 2006 he seen the bull again
2007 shoots the bull

In 2 year you have had4 encounters with a mature deer.
I will take that for the rest of my career, two shots at mature deer in 1 year is pretty good.;)

Hunting food source in later part of the season is targeting where the deer are, you may have been hunting other deer. You are hunting no different than me in the evenings. Targeting food source, in the morning targeting travel routes back to bedding areas.

Jeff find yourself some bedding areas and you have complete puzzle;) If I recallthe park system there is no hunting allowed(where they bed). I can tell you that is ideal in my book. Snuggle up as close as you can;)

Joe Brooks shot his biggest buck where?

Right next to a park;)

I'm not wishing I could hunt somewhere else. There's the misnomer.

By stating that you wish you could makes it sound as if it's impossible for you to do so.

Nope. I'm not unhappy with the spots I hunt right now. Never led on to that, either. Didn't mean to sound anything different than "happy" to hunt where I do. Do I wish the places I hunt had some different apsects? Sure. Is it enough to make me want to seek other places to hunt, though. Mine have proven quite fruitful.

Again...I'm not wishing for anything. And if a guy kills 2 mature bucks in 2 seasons hunting "his" way.....would you say he's been pretty "successful"?

Something don't add up here........ You see a ton of deer from your stands.
That adds up just fine.

OK. I didn't say I don't see deer. Quite the contrary. During the early part of the season....I eluded to the deer I see browsing on this side. I just don't see NEARLY the numbers I do after the ag crops are harvested and they get on the mast crops. i've been saying this for a LONG time.

If you only see mature bucks during the rut, you're severely limiting yourself. Time for a new spot.
Why would I want to move from a spot that's produced 2 mature bucks on my wall in as many years?

In 2 year you have had4 encounters with a mature deer.
In 2 seasons I had no less than8 encounters with a mature deer (eight times a mature deer was within 20 yds or less from me)

I know where they bed, Gary. It's just on land I can't access. Joe's book was a real eye opener. I DO hunt right up on it at times (bedding area).....but I can't technically access the actual land they bed on (not that I'd want to;)). I don't hunt IN their bedding area(s)....but in all actuality....I DO hunt VERY near to them.

For a big portion of the season.....I catch them in transition areas that they come out into before they bed down for the day.....catching that last little browse bite. When the mast crops fall, though.....it's Katie bar the door. I'm set. The 3 sides with the ag crops are spent....and I sit on the prime feeding grounds. It's not a bad place or WAY to hunt. It's just a little unorthodox. I'm not unhappy with it. I wait my turn.;)
