RE: scouting public property

Last season(06) I had to pass up on 2 does, other than that the other deer I have seen were moving to fast or out of range.I have tried to move to where the one 8 pt was, he stood 50 - 60 yds from me. That was the only time I ever saw him.

Didn't get out at all this year.

Good for you! I plan to do the same this weekend. We have some very good bowhunting only public areas that I have always wanted to try....I'm getting proactive this year......No more hanging on my small tract waiting for a buck to come by!

We gotta get out there and find them!

Good for both of you guys!! I'm sure you know this but find a lot of spots "just in case" spots. There are times where I plan on hunting a great spot for the wind, get there early and someone is the! Plan B, sometimes Plan C. Have fun guys and good luck!

yep...always good for public land to have back up spots.....only down side is that in order to really understand a spot (public land) you have to hunt it a lot and scout it a lot...if you enjoy the scouting aspect then it is great,,new areas and it will increase your learning curve of deer (whitetail or blacktail) extremley

Your right, Thats why I'm ALWAYS looking for different spots. Sometimes we need to scout more than hunt! I scout year round except for June/July due to work, no days off. I really enjoy it. It feels good to find a different location and then kill a deer off it! Its like every time I hunt a new area I'll see or get a shot off at a deer![8D]

RE: scouting public property

This year was my first hunting season. Fortunately I had a friend who had hunted the public land for about 15-20 years. It got crowded a lot this year and I bumped and got bumped into by other hunters. I just got in there EARLY...sometimes almost 1:30 before light. As far as scouting he showed me what I need to look for....droppings, rubs lines, scrapes, trails were all over. Go where YOU would go to avoid hunters. Only a couple of times I failed to see ANY deer even with the pressure this year. Good luck and be patient...
