More Knowledgable?
Would you say you have more knowledge when it comes to your equipment or the animal you are after?
The same? For me I would say the animal. I pretty much let my local pro shop set me up then I go out and practice and get tight groups and good to go. For example: If something happened like my D loop coming off I would probably be screwed. I have promised myself to work on getting to know the equipment side of things more. |
RE: More Knowledgable?
I know almost nothing about bows and how they're set up.
I know deer have to eat, sleep and make little deer.....and that I have to to catch them on their way to doing one of those to be successful. That's about as simple as it gets in my book. |
RE: More Knowledgable?
Both.
Maybe a slight edge to knowing bows better since there is still so much to learn about deer. |
RE: More Knowledgable?
It depends on the animal, but the cut and dry answer would be my equipment.
|
RE: More Knowledgable?
5 years ago I would have said the animal, without question.
Today I have to go with the edge on the equipment. 1. because I've learned so much about gear from this place, and 2. I keep learning I have a lot more to learn about deer. |
RE: More Knowledgable?
rybo post just about sums it up for me, I am no expert bow wizard but I have a member on this forum to thank for the knowledge that I do (Big John) and its enough to get my bow tuned by myself to the point I want it, the deer on the other hand, every few years everything seems to change, its not so much the deer as the enviroment. Several years ago a narrow funnel behind my house was the "gimmie" spot and had constant use, now its rare to see a deer there. This past season my "gimmie" spot was gone due to timbering and a new county jail being built adjoining the property. As soon as I get a good pattern on the deer something changes.

RE: More Knowledgable?
I'm working on the equipment..I got a lot to learn
I can cut and fletch my own arrows. I 'm good at setting up bow accessories. (muzzy 0 effect for example) not just screwing in a stabilizer :). But the bow itself, new string cables ..stuff requiring a press..goes to the shop. Which isn't a huge deal I live under 1 mile to the shop! |
RE: More Knowledgable?
If my hunting knowledge was a pitcher of beer, what I know about deer would fill a mug. The rest would be equipment. :D
|
RE: More Knowledgable?
My equipment, no question. I have so much to learn about deer, I don't think I have enough time.
|
RE: More Knowledgable?
i think i know more about the deer

RE: More Knowledgable?
ORIGINAL: GregH Both. Maybe a slight edge to knowing bows better since there is still so much to learn about deer. I became self sufficient for a reason. There are few I'd let set up my bow and even fewer that I'd rely on. I have a full blown shop in my basement for me and my friends. The Deer, no one will ever know it all. Like Greg, I'll be learning the whitetail to the day they lay me down. |
RE: More Knowledgable?
The animal, the whitetail. I am a book nerd.. and own nearly 60 books on whitetail and each one I've read. When I'm not hunting deer.. I'm photographing them.. scouting them.. looking for their sheds.. whatever.
I've never known a great deal on equipment.. which is why you'll never see me post when a question is asked about equipment. I only answer biology questions. When I have an equipment Q.. I ask Justin. |
RE: More Knowledgable?
I know everything there is to know about deer, Its just that the deer know that I know, and switch things up to make me less than 100%. ;)
As far as my equipment goes, I do everything myself, including making my own strings and cables, no one else touches my stuff. [:@] |
RE: More Knowledgable?
I had a small bow shop in my garage about 15 years ago, so I know bows pretty well and how to set them up. I have been hunting with a bow since I was a little kid. The thing I need to know is where the biggest bucks are in my area. I can't alway get into everywhere I need to be.

RE: More Knowledgable?
Im working on both myself lol, but I believe I know more about the animal then my equipment.
|
RE: More Knowledgable?
Neither! When I get either one figured out, I'll let you guys know
|
RE: More Knowledgable?
I look at my 16-year-old son and know all I need to know about a buck in rut. :D
|
RE: More Knowledgable?
:D:D:DNow that was funny.
|
RE: More Knowledgable?
Neither here, lol. I know the basics of both but have a loooonnnggg way to go in both areas as well. Like someone else stated, i can set up my rest and simple stuff like that, but anything on the string and im in a shop. Bow presses are too much anyway[8D]

RE: More Knowledgable?
for me probably a little more knowledge about the animal im after.
|
RE: More Knowledgable?
Equipment for sure...It's much more straight forward to me than pursuing deer...I still have quite a few years before I'll feel like I know what I'm doing out in the woods.
|
RE: More Knowledgable?
Equipment. I'm not even that knowledgable in that department. I'm learning a lot more (especially in the last year) about the draw force curve, KE/Spine/Arrow weight relationships, tuning techniques, etc. I really want to learn to do string/cable work on my bow and not limit myself to just putting accessories on. I want to take my bow to someone and have them actually TEACH me, properly pressing a bow, putting in peeps, tying serving it, splitting cables, installing new strings/cables, etc.

RE: More Knowledgable?
Unfortunately the animal. The only thing I know about archery equiptment is how to shoot it.[&:]

RE: More Knowledgable?
i like to tinker with things...i cant do ALL my own bow work as of yet, but plan to become a do it yourselfer and buy the tools and press etc...
i tune my own bows...use the shop to get my paper tune..then go home and fine tune...i can handle the basics thus far...tying my own loops, tuning, sights, etc...and understand some of it...i can broadhead tune my bow and not have trouble doing it for the most part... more than some guys i know...they just simply know how to shoot...when it comes time for broadheads they simply move their sights... the game im after, i know enough to hunt them and see them somewhat regularly...but am always trying to learn more about deer... for some reason, i enjoy learning about things i enjoy...you can preach to me all day in a class room and if im not interested, i may never catch a word you say....you talk to me about bows or deer or coon dogs, etc im all ears and taking notes...just the way i am....enjoy learning and think you can never learn/know too much....always room to learn more |
