RE: Another twist on "mature" bucks
Really depends on your area, although a 3.5 year old is mature he may not be the most mature or dominate buck on the block. In anybody's book a 3.5 should be a trophy

RE: Another twist on "mature" bucks
I agree this argument is subjective tothe 3.5 yo deer in question, and the over-all age structure of the bucks in the area being hunted, primarily including antler size. For my hunting area I'd say a 3.5 is a borderline harvest for me personally on average. Starting a couple years ago, I re-evaluated my criteria for harvesting a buck and I decided mostdeer in that age class I'll let walk because they simply aren't as big as I'd like mass-wise, but if he's a 3.5 yo thatwould be what I call a'buck of a lifetime',I'm sure not going to pass him up just because of his age!!!

RE: Another twist on "mature" bucks
Since I haven't seen Dr. Death post on this thread yet, I thought I would answer on his behalf with a picture of my own.
To heck with 2.5's, 3.5's, 4.5's, 5.5's and 6.5's being mature. You should all set your sights on bucks that are 7.5 or older.[8D] |
RE: Another twist on "mature" bucks
Yep, again in my area, I would love to see more bucks make it to five years old. but seems like all to many little bucks get taken during firearms season.

RE: Another twist on "mature" bucks
who knows----but if we are talking about bragging rights of killing a "mature" buck, then I guess we should all just continue arguing because it is all about the ego... over the last 8 years in the place I currently hunt I have only seen a handful of "mature" bucks. So to me, a 3.5 year old buck would not only be mature by its species standards but mine as well...so YES.
