Hey everybody,
I'm an oldschool bow hunter - no composites, no calls, just my good old Bearcat and as much time tracking as it takes. As one guy mentioned, Saturday was the last day of the season for "antlered bucks" in Pennsylvania. So last day of the season, I'm not taking any chances. I start out real early, find myself a trail that's still almost warm and follow it for hours. Finally I get close, and he's beautiful - big boy, killer antlers, I don't know how he keeps his head up. With my bearcat I need to get pretty close, but that's the best part of the hunt for me, and I'm almost there.
Now I've been hearing something for a while now, and the buck's been hearing it too. Sort of a rumble in the background from some guy riding his ATV - illegally, I should add, cause I know for a fact that they aren't allowed in this area.
So I get really close, almost there, and all of a sudden the sound - down the hill - gets a heck of a lot louder. And there he is: some joyrider off-roading his ATV where he shouldn't be, and my buck - the catch of the season I've been tracking for hours - is headed for the hills at top speed. And I walk home empty handed.
Anyway, it turns out that mine wasn't the only catch this guy - or someone else riding their ATV in non-motorized areas - scared off on the make-or-break day of the season. Have any of you guys had this happen?
And are you still as PISSED OFF as I am???

Its happened to me in Northern Minnesota bear hunting! Those SOB's are the 1st words that come out of my mouth. People don't care what the laws are, they think there the law sometimes! And yes I'm still pissed off about it!

oldschool, I feel your pain. I'm sorry to hear that you had gotten so close only to have it screwed up like that. Still you have an awesome experience to take home with you.
I live in the suburbs and always have so contending with joy riders, legal or otherwise, has always been something that I've had to deal with. Yes, they screw up your hunt, but there is nothing you can do about it. Once I have some joy riders come by I stay alert for a bit to see if they push something to me. If they don't I relax for a few minutes before I go back into "game mode" and enjoy the quiet.
BTW, I admire the way you hunt. I don't have the skill or the patience for it, but those of you that do I commend. Respect.

there is no reason for breaking the law
but if there were more public places for people to ride the ATV and off road trucks they would not ride where there not allowed to
there are a few places around here but most place i have been there is nothing for a 100 miles

I did a double take on the title too! Looks like just a coincidence to me.
Maybe a pocket full of roofing nails and a leisurely walk down the ATV trail are in order

Yeah sorry to BTBowhunter for stealing his post title - I just saw his post about GETTING the buck, and was jealous about losing mine.
Isatarak, I've got no problem with ATV's man, my brother has one at his place out in Minnesota and he gets pissed sometimes about having to go out of his way to ride. But at least he doesn't ruin it for anybody else. I don't have much problem with anyone as long as they don't come in between me and my kill... live and let hunt!
P.S. HuntingBry you want to try something fun, go up to Minnesota or something and try spear fishing. I didn't even know people still did that until my brother took me out. Didn't get anything, but still had a blast. He speared like three big fishes... frikkin awesome!
