i bought my first bow, having never shot a bow before. I had a buddy that got me interested. he showed me his bow said i could shoot it but didnt want to wreak his bow. Stores have insurance lol. He just basically went through the basics of the bow. When i got to the store. They were really helpful. We first started out with him checking my draw length. He was very understanding about this being the first time i shot a bow. You have to start somewhere. Most stores will have display bows that you can shoot. Some smaller ones will have to set the bow up that you are wanting to shoot. Most will give you really crappy rests and no sights. I had to eye my shot. If you dont do that it can be a rather lengthy process of switching gear on different bows. Also he helped guide my arrows. I didnt know how to shoot insticts so he kind of helped out there. Just take your time and really think about the bow you want. RESEARCH!!!! I cant stress this point enough. You have to study. I went and bought a PSE. And to be honest they are ok bows, they are just not ME if you will. What i meant buy that is i could not get consistant shots at all! Had a real hard time with it. Really noisy too! Which ads to a a problem that some people might have. Which is flinching. I went and bought an upper class bow. Dont regret it one bit. Very smooth quiet and forgiving. Well my friend i hope i supplied you with some good info. let me know if you have any more questions.

Mauser everyone has to start sometime and most archery shops I have been in will try to help you all they can .If you tell them you are a beginner they we more than likely start you on a light bow to see what you know and work from there. Leave the macho thing at home nobody started knowing it all .

My husband stated me really into archery. A friend can be a wealth of info and first hand and hands on experience. Even a little wanna be bow has alot to teach a beginner. If you still have access to a friend with a bow I would try to abtain as much hands on experience with them and their bow as posssible. As for looking like an Idiot, dont worry about that,Ive been shooting for years and I can still look like an Idiot on a occasion.<img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>

How do you learn? You could do this all by reading and by asking questions of the net.

There are always used bow sets for sale on Ebay - you can get a complete set for less than $100. It will be a mere shadow of the high tech beauties that are being sold now, but almost as good for killing deer for a 10th the money.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=20838

This is a PSE Polaris ( the auction has a reserve, unfortunately) - similar auctions have gone as low as $51.

We'd have to guess at your draw length and what draw weight you would need, but these old bows are usually adjustable.

Then you could shoot and see how you like bow hunting and reward yourself with a new setup once you, say, can keep you arrows in a 6 inch circle at 30 yards.

It might depend on how handy you and your friend are.

Just walk in there like you absolutely do not know a thing!! lol. That's the way I put it to the bow shop I went to buy my bow and have the guy set me up. He was excellent with me. I didn't even know how to put the strap to my release around my wrist at first. I agree to leave the machoisms at home and be honest with whoever you choose to go to. Everyone has been there. You'll be surprised how much fun it is and how quick you pick it up by the time you leave though!!

Genesis 27:3 Now then, get your weapons-your quiver and bow-and go out to the open country to hunt some wild game for me.
