RE: All this location talk got me thinking
No argument, Atlas....just a question. Given MY situation....do you think I'm doing the right thing.....eliminating "so many" does? I can see both sides.....but I feel like I'm doing the right thing. Interested in your thoughts If you have highly pressured the deer and he has not, he's gonna have more deer visit him, at least in shooting light. |

ORIGINAL: Charlie P Ok both have 200 acres both have ample bedding, there is a wide river at the back of both of the properties, the surronding area's,hmm, some pratice QDM some don't. Hunting pressure is low on both properties. |
RE: All this location talk got me thinking
Do you think my location will improve, pre-rut,Peak Rut, and post rut? |
RE: All this location talk got me thinking
ORIGINAL: GMMAT If your land holds does then the bucks will show up sooner or later..........why guys want to eliminate so many does is questionable logic to me at best. Interested in your thoughts. 1. You are improving the buck to doe ratio by shooting more does. 2. By thinning the doe population you are thinning your future deer population but making conditions better... A. More food is available for the remaining deerby havingless deer. meaning healthy deer with less stress. B. Bucks will compete more with less does. That is always a good thing. The toughest and most agressivebucks should do more breeding in this senerio. Those genes will be passed on making a better quality deer population in future years. There are many more but don't have the time to list them all. Tim |

RE: All this location talk got me thinking
Make it 2000 acres then you both have 2000 acres.
A buck could be on the other 200 acres and you won't see him come on yours, happens all the time btw. Until the rut kicks in.;) |
RE: All this location talk got me thinking
I've never had the experience of hunting "different" herds......but if you're not practicing QDM and your neighbor is......it would stand to reason you're gonna reap some of thebenefits of his efforts.....especially when the bucks expand their home range (during the rut).
And I agree with you Charlie (in that some bucks don't "travel"). I've yet to see a "traveler" buck wander through the area I hunt (and I understand I'm 'sharing' a herd with several other landowners/lease holders). I'm sure they come through. I just haven't seen them. With as many does as I/we have.....they don't have to travel, much. It would be like leaving bar "A" where there's 30 hot women......to go to bar "B" where there's simply a different 30. What's the point (if you're a deer.....and looks don't factor in to the equation)? Without knowing it (or intending to).....he's helping you (adjacent landowner). Germ nailed that. |

RE: All this location talk got me thinking
GMMAT, We're not talking about your hunting area, this is just a scenario I thought up. Unless your hunting area is like the one I mentioned why bring it up? Everyone knows exactly what your hunting situation is ok?
|
RE: All this location talk got me thinking
Yes, given equal hunting pressure on both properties.
