I would have to probably take a shot if I was in that situation but I dont think I would mount even though I would stick consider it a trophy. I might consider mounting it but I would have to shoot one first to see what I would realy do.

You guys are mean, I've never shot a half rack. A half rack would be missing his other side right. I have however shot broken racks and don't regret a single one of them. They meant/mean the world to me for the hunt that they were.

First one, 3.5 year old shot the last week of our reason. I thought it was a 4 X Spike, turned out he broke his right side right at the base and that "spike" was his brow point, 10.5" long. Great buck. He would have gone 130 with both matching sides. His left side nearly measure 60".

Second one fell because it was two days before our season close and it was on my birthday. My first and only birthday deer. This one was truly a 4 x spike. The spike measures 12.5" long. 2.5 year old and he really wouldn't get much better.

And number 3 was this years buck. He is/was a broken rack 8 piont, 3.5 year old and the best buck in range this past year.

To Answer the question, Would you shoot a mature half rack buck? NO, I would not shoot a half rack, ie one totally missing his second side. No, I would not.

two years ago in rifle season i shot an old buck that was a beautiful 4 on one side and the other side was a 8 inch nub! both bases i couldn't get my hands around. :( the buck was on its down slope and way past it's prime. i didn't know about the nub until after i shot it. i only saw the big four points on the one side. i still would have shot it even if a saw the nub before the shot. the body of the deer was huge!!

Yes I would shoot and at least plaque mount it.

This one was all broke up but he had some character, notice the buckshot in the beam. The right side looked to be an old break possibly from fighting or a car but the left side brow looked fresh at the timeI killed himand probably was due to the buckshot someone sent his way(not mine I shoot #1copper coated and only shot him once at about 30 yards and dropped him). He was old and grey andIam sure he was close to if not a tad over 200#. Pretty cool buckto me.

Here's a big Iowa buck I shot in 2001. The carbon was a complete passed through the exit hole you can see on his shoulder blade. He would of been about 320 to 325 on the hoof. The locker weighted him in and told me his weight.

I am not a trophy hunter - but I would not shoot.

I know I wouldn't mount it - and I don't thinkI could ever look at the 1/2 rack on the wall without thinking it was a shame.

It happened a couple years ago to me - except it was the last weekend of Blackpowder (late december) - and a 1/2 rack with a 20"+ Main beam came almost under me. I passed - and it wasn't that hard to do knowing that it wasn't likely he was going to get shot with only 2 days left.

Note: The first two are being plague mounted beside each other. Two skull mounts. I think it's going to look cool side by side.

The third is at the taxidermist.
