Whats everyones' batting average?

I just wanted to see how my pathetic .500 avg. stacked up against some of the heavy hitters on here. I will be the first to say that in this "business" ,.500 ,(for my own standards) is not acceptable. All my misses were pilot error, and am just thankful I did not wound anything. I will attribute some of it to first year shooting with 3 pins instead of 1, but unacceptable non the less. Here goes:
1. Shot a button buck at 20 yds. steep down hill quartering away. Harvested.
2. Shot a doe at 15yds. Harvested.
3. Shot at a doe at 20yds. broadside but heavy angle around tree. All bunched up on shot, string hit arm, missed wide. Should not have shot.
4.Shot at 130+ buck. Mis-ranged his lane at 40, shot over him. Actual distance was 35yds.
5. Shot a doe at 25yds. quartering away, double lung, harvested.
6. Shot a doe broadside 22yds. harvested.
The last 2 were in the last 2 days,
7. After holding at full draw for 3-4 minutes, I finally shot at a doe at 20yds broadside. Jerked trigger and shot over.
8. Shot at a doe at 30yds. actual distance was 25. Shot over. She was semi alert. If I had shot for the actual distance though, she would have been down.

There it is. My season in a nut shell. 4 opportunities missed due to issues in my control.
Anyone care to share their shot history? Criticism? Season re-cap?

Just the 07 season or all my 26 seasons cause I really wouldn't have a clue.

RE: Whats everyones' batting average?

shot a doe 20 yards
shot a squirrel 15 yards
shot a doe 9 yards
(i dunno if this counts i was just messing around ) shot at a rabbit on a dead sprint(missed by a few inches)

so for '07 so far .750 but tomorrow im hoping to up the average and connect with a buck . Got my fingers crossed!

RE: Whats everyones' batting average?

Okay then....:)

2 for 4 on turkeys in KS, killed first one at 31 yards, nicked one at 41 yards, missed a head shot at 16 yards then killed the same bird at 19 yards. (ALL caught on film for River Valley Game Calls Head Hunters vol IV): http://www.huntingnet.com/fieldjournal/fieldjournal_detail.aspx?nID=645

and 2 for 2 on whitetails, doe and buck. The doe at 41 yards, the buck at 26 yards.

That would be 4 for 6 or .667 % .

- mis-ranged a 40yd broadside shot at a doe fawn to below 30'sthus just giving it a haircut

- hit too far forward on another doeat a 10yd steep quartering away angle... lost

- 30yd steep broadside at a nubby... dropped on the spot

- 35yd almost severe quartering away at a nearly P&Y andanatomically 10 point... recovered

batting avg is .500 shooting for 100% next year.

Two bucks and two does doubled lunged all within 20 yards and dead in a another 30 yards. They went DOWN quickly.
AND one nice buck at under 20 shot square in the shoulder and never recovered. Hanging head in shame but such is hunting.

How do you count multiple arrows in the same animal? Does that count as one?

Nebraska turkey: 20 yards, blind
Nebraska turkey: 6 yards, flew away with arrow, not recovered, blind
Nebraska turkey: 30 yards, spot and stalk
Nebraska turkey fall: 20 yards, spot and stalk
New Zealand tahr 3 of 4 from 27 out to 50 yards, spot and stalk
New Zealand chamois 2 of 4 from 30 out to 60 yards, spot and stalk
New Zealand red deer: 40 yards, spot and stalk
New Zealand Arapawa sheep: 6 yards, spot and stalk
New Zealand turkey: 20 yards, spot and stalk
New Zealand turkey: 15 yards, spot and stalk
New Zealand Turkey: 35 yards, spot and stalk
New Zealand Feral Boar: 6 yards, spot and stalk
Texas blackbuck: 45 yards, spot and stalk
Texas blackbuck doe: 20 yards, spot and stalk
Texas aoudad: 22 yards, spot and stalk
Texas ibex: 27 yards, blind
Colorado elk: 45 yards, spot and stalk
Colorado mule deer: 54 yards, good hit-pass through-not recovered, spot and stalk
Colorado mt. goat: 38 yards, bad hit-finished with a rifle, spot and stalk
Colorado mule deer: 35 yards, spot and stalk
South Dakota whitetail buck: 35 yards, high hit-not recovered, tree stand
South Dakota whitetail buck: 20 yards, tree stand
Illinois whitetail buck: 27 yards, tree stand
Illinois whitetail doe: 20 yards, shot late in the evening, devoured by coyotes by sunup
Quebec caribou: 40 yards, spot and stalk
Quebec caribou: 20 yards, spot and stalk
Nebraska Whitetail buck: 20 yards, spot and stalk
Nebraska whitetail doe: 30 yards, good hit, not recovered, tree stand
Texas whitetail doe: miss, blind
Texas whitetail doe: 23 yards, blind

Four out of 36 arrows missed their mark, four animals were not recovered after being shot (intensive searching), and one animal was hit/recovered but finished with a rifle.

I took a fallow deer and red deer in New Zealand with a rifle

Respect!

The sad thing is.....there are people who will take the high and mighty stance that you didn't recover all of your animals. I've been saying that there are 3 types of people. 1) Those who will admit to hitting but not recovering an animal. 2. Those who will NOT admit to it. and 3. Those who haven't had enough shot opportunities.

I want to commend you on one helluva GREAT season. I am in awe.

RE: Whats everyones' batting average?

Thanks Jeff,

There isn't one shot that I regret taking. As someone said, "it's hunting". The turkey which flew away was hit just about as perfectly as one could be hit. We went back with dogs after searching for several hours. The dogs couldn't even find the bird. We weren't sure if a coyote sweep through and found the gobbler before us, or...? One doe in Illinois was eaten by coyotes after we decided to look for her in the morning-again, the shot was spot on. The doe in Nebraska collapsed within sight of me. I really thought she was down for the count. The shot was right through the boiler room. I got up a little early...her head was down and I thought she was dead. When I approached, she got up and ran...never to be seen again (my fault, I pushed to soon). The buck in South Dakota...I do not know what happened there. The buck may have ducked. Had my arrow hit him one inch lower...lights out.I spent two days looking for him.

Here's a photo of the doe I shot in Texas.

2007 has been a rough one for me.....mostly as far as sightings go.....

0/2 wolves with bow[:@]
1/1 doe with bow
2/2 bucks with rifle

The wolf misses bother me more than any deer I have ever missed. I overestimated the yardage......they were shots I've been dreaming of for 5 years.... I only have myself to blame.

a brain shot will kill her right then and a lung shot could take 15-30 seconds of her squirming around in pain

This year
2/2compund
0/1 longbow, the doe ducked
2/3handgun (all shots at the same deer though) 1st shot knocked her down, she got up & ran (miss as she ran) she stopped and the 3rd shot put her down for good.
1/1 shotgun

all shots were does.

I did go thru an 11 year period with 26 consecutive bowkills without missing/losing a deer.

3 Squirrels, one took arrow in tree, so I shot it with .22; oone, my arrow shot its arm together, pinning it to a tree
Shot one pheasant, killed on impact

RE: Whats everyones' batting average?

My kills number in the3 digits over the span of my bowhunting career. Have I missed some you bet, have I hit some and not found them? Unfortunately, yes. Most of my mishaps occurred in the 1st few years I Bowhunted. Murphy didn't just visit me, he stayed in my pack. I still have a visit from him once in a while, but it seems to happen farther, and farther apart. Batting 1000 is something I doubt can be done, but your average will improve as your experience grows. You get less rattled on game, shot selection becomes much better, and youbecome more skilled attracking andanimal recovery.
Shooting practice is good and we all should practice as much as possible, but no amount of practice can exactly simulate taking a live animal. Therefore Bowhunting and killing is the best teacher and average improver there is;)

Not always! I've seen arrows sticking out of a deers head a day later still running around. Always shoot for the lungs if you can. In your case maybe that was your only shot, if you have options always take the lung shot.;)
