this season i shot a doe at 25 yards and she went down in about 45-50 yards.
i also shot a doe on monday at 40 yards i hit her spine so i ran as fast as i could to her and put an arrow in her head
Why not in the lungs?
i aimed for the lungs but i moved as i let my arrow fly
I meant your finishing shot.

a brain shot will kill her right then and a lung shot could take 15-30 seconds of her squirming around in pain

This year
2/2compund
0/1 longbow, the doe ducked
2/3handgun (all shots at the same deer though) 1st shot knocked her down, she got up & ran (miss as she ran) she stopped and the 3rd shot put her down for good.
1/1 shotgun

all shots were does.

I did go thru an 11 year period with 26 consecutive bowkills without missing/losing a deer.

130" Buck-Double Lung, went 60 yards
Small 11 point-Spined him, went 0 yards.
5 rabbits, 4 killed on impact, 1 took arrow under bulding, recovered (missed like 4)
3 Squirrels, one took arrow in tree, so I shot it with .22; oone, my arrow shot its arm together, pinning it to a tree
Shot one pheasant, killed on impact

My kills number in the3 digits over the span of my bowhunting career. Have I missed some you bet, have I hit some and not found them? Unfortunately, yes. Most of my mishaps occurred in the 1st few years I Bowhunted. Murphy didn't just visit me, he stayed in my pack. I still have a visit from him once in a while, but it seems to happen farther, and farther apart. Batting 1000 is something I doubt can be done, but your average will improve as your experience grows. You get less rattled on game, shot selection becomes much better, and youbecome more skilled attracking andanimal recovery.
Shooting practice is good and we all should practice as much as possible, but no amount of practice can exactly simulate taking a live animal. Therefore Bowhunting and killing is the best teacher and average improver there is

Not always! I've seen arrows sticking out of a deers head a day later still running around. Always shoot for the lungs if you can. In your case maybe that was your only shot, if you have options always take the lung shot.
