what state would you pick

if you were going to buy land for hunting fishing so on
what state would you pick if you could go any where and your job family where not a issue where would it be and lets say Mexico and Canada are options as well
what would make your choice for you like gun laws season length weather what factors would you look at

say for rifle
bow
shotgun
and muzzle loader
if any of them would be different then another

Well I don't know how you can take Family and School systems and friends and other things out of that equation.

So having said that I would choose to have land right here in NE Ohio or at least within a 30 minute or so drive.

Probably one of Idaho, Montana, Colorado, Wyoming.

Much more variety, got two species of deer, elk, pronghorn, turkey, upland/waterfowl, sheep and lots of fishing.

RE: what state would you pick

Well since you included fishing…..That makes it a bit more difficult.

The main things I would look at are:
species diversity
quality of their wildlife management system (which includes seasons & bag limits)
Quality of the trout & smallmouth bass fishing

Some states in the running would be

Idaho-incredible species diversity & absolutely beautiful
Montana-self explanatory
Ohio-great deer and close to home but not sure about the fishing
Missouri- good deer/turkeys & smallmouth
PA- lacking in deer quality, but if I had enough land to manage I could deal with it. Excellent trout & smallmouth fishing

Wisconsin for whitetails. Montana for everything else! Minnesota does treat me ok, so hunting whitetails here isn't so bad either!

i would stay in Illinois

well i do not mean to take family and friends out of the equation but if you had to move out of state for what ever reason and you picked you place on hunting where would it be

Montana, without a doubt. Good whitetails, and an abundance of other big game as well.

BINGO! My brother currently lives there, it's just amazing. Everything from deer, elk, pheasants, ducks.......merriam turkeys....What kind of fishing are you after? They've got it.

SevenMag 12-27-2007 01:37 PM

RE: what state would you pick

depends, am I going to live on that land or just use it for hunting/fishing/etc.???

if its not where i'd live, out west somewhere, MT, WY, ID, dakota's... but most likely it would end up being in west central IL some where in the Peoria/Quincy/RockIsland triangle cuz it is close enough to home so I can hunt frequently and still be able to manage the land myself...

cooter144 12-27-2007 01:39 PM

RE: what state would you pick

For hunting AND fishing...Minnesota is a great choice.

MN hasover 3 million acres of public hunting land and over 10,000 lakes.

Although rarely mentioned as one of the big buck states for whitetails...there are only2 or 3that have entered more P&Y and B&C animals all time.

We also have bears, turkeys, grouse, geese, ducks, pheasant, etc.

GMMAT 12-27-2007 01:42 PM

RE: what state would you pick

I think I have it all......right here in the state I'm in. Ignorance is bliss, they say;)

I can be in the mountains in less than an hour. I can be at the coast in less than 4. I can hunt whitetails and turkeys out my back door......but the deer here won't get many people's hearts racing. The world record black bear was taken in this state....if one were so inclined.

I love the state I'm in. I'm fine, right here.

Wow Rybo I cant believe you said that, I honestly do not have an idea because i do not hunt in PA... but im looking for PA to be the new Illinois, Ohio, etc.... in about 4-6 years IMO!

I am just saying this based on all the good I have heard from numerous people from the state!!

As far as where I would move to, I have not a clue??? It would take some research, all I know is I need big trout!! Oh and big bucks would be nice as well!!

Montana with out a doubt.

Trophy whitetails, Mule deer, elk, moose, sheep, mountain goats, pronghorn, bears, all kinds of small game, predators, upland birds, ducks and geese, trout fishing.

RE: what state would you pick

I forgot to mention the best bird hunting in the world...

But the best reason of all....

PLENTY OF ROOM FOR EVERYONE!! Dont have to pay to rent a small chunk of land to hunt...Dont have to be rich as there is sooo much crown (government) land that we all have access to. And that aint all bad!

I really think Ohio has all I would ever need....

The only places that would tempt me is other mid-west statesthat allow two buck tags.

I wouldn't mind however relocating to south-central to south-east Ohio.

Much better hunting opportunities in those areas.

for length of seasons, bag limits, license costs, number and varietyof species for big game small game upland game, amount of land and water to hunt and fish, for fishing, bow, muzzlelaoder, rifle and handgun, it has to be new york. no question.

for big game only, ie elk, sheep, moose, pronghorn, muleys, it has to be wyoming.

Probably a big hunk on a riverbottom in eastern Montana(especially if there was a local farmer that would want some extra farmland to work;))....hard to beat the variety there!

RE: what state would you pick

i think there are great places everywhere for me i would look at season lenth bag limits tag cost use of weapons ie if rifle is ok

then go from there to area i sen anice 1200 acre area in burkesville ky had cleared farm land for plotswoods was on a riverand for ky was mainly flat nice area but it also had those ky hills that are 50 foot high of a clearing that would make a great blind sight

but then here in sullivan indiana they just sold 1400 acres of mine land that had like 150 little lakes onit some 20 acrespine stands and clearing for plot some area already planted for year so no weed issues sold it for 2000 a acre and they had it split up if you did not wont all of it

Texas Hill Country. Lots of deer, turkey and hogs, good bird hunting and big bass. Fishing and something to hunt year round.

Wow, so many states to pick and it really depends on the species. I'd love a spot with plenty of elk, whitetail, mule deer, pronghorn, black bear, turkeys etc...sorta narrows it. :D
