Red oaks are all they had around here this year and they tore them up. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Fertilize some of each. They really like the Shingle Oaks in my woods.

I can pretty much tell one from another every time. Years of practice helps.

With foliage... Red Oak have pointed leaf tips while White Oak have rounded lobes.

All I have on my property are black jack oaks. When they drop acorns, the deer eat the heck out of them. If I had some white oaks, I'm sure the deer would prefer them, though.

Also, the spikes are expensive... Go to your local co-op and buy a 50#bag of fertilizer (they will recommend the proper balance 12-12-12, 15-15-15 etc.) and put it around the drip edge of the tree..... Much more cost effective.

You will get a few trees out of one 50# bag.

I will do so, thank you.

Ive never done it so I didnt realize there would be a cost difference.

Is this common practice ?
I have fertilized a few select oaks for a few years.... I do not know how common it is though.... Guess it depends on ones motivation.
