Default What's your best method of getting permission?

I found an area or two where I want to try to get permission to hunt. I was wondering what's worked best for you'ns? It seems like if I just go up to the door they'll be so put off by a stranger asking to hunt on their land that they won't hear what I'm saying. So I was wondering if I should shoot them a phone call or a letter first to give them a bit of a heads up. On the other hand, should I risk being nipped in the bud before I can get a chance to make an impression in person? What would you'ns suggest?

Dress nicely...not a suit, but not in camo or jeans.

Clean shaven, NOT right after work...unless your work is very clean work....still, shave again.

Obey any "No Trespassing" or "Keep Away" signs....and look very well for dogs in the area. Drive a car if possible, and not your hunting 4x4.

Knock on the door, when the owner answers..."Hello, my name is (your name here), are you the owner of (said land)?" Wait for answer. "Well, I was wondering if it would be possible for me to go hunting there (on said property) next season (whatever season you are interested in)?"

If the owner says YES, then possibly offer to help with some work around his house, or a cash payment, or even some of the game harvested. Most folks, unless a past situation has soured them, will simply say YES or NO.

It's that simple.

The first thing I do is wait until dark and then sneak around the land owners house with my camcorder peeking into the windows and waiting till I find the owners in an embrassing and comprimising position and film away, I then present the owner with a copy of this footage telling him that unless I am allowed to hunt on his property I will go public. Just Kidding, please dont do this. One thing Ive found to be very helpful is to present people with my business card. That way they know who I am and how they can get ahold of me. This seems to work very well in my neck of the woods.

I was faced with this issue for the first time this last season, and here's what I did. First and foremost it's harder to say no to someone face to face. Don't ever call. I found for me it was easiest just to be myself and not try to shine someone into thinking you're someone that your not. Bring your equipment and be prepared to show it, and how well you use it. I found people were very interested in my bow. Be cordial and if they say no, don't push the issue, just ask that if they are ever going to reconsider, keep you inmind. I also give them a business card with my name and telephone. Two farms that I hunted this year I also gave venison, some folks will want some and some won't, dosen't hurt to ask. This worked for me on three different properties this year. Just my .02 for what it's worth.

IL,
Catfish and mshane have given you some great info. I would add that you were looking for the owner of the property in question and you were wanting to know if they owned it or knew who did. This shows you want to do it right. Also if you have a young son or daughter take them and explain that you would like to find a place where you can hunt SAFELY and teach her/him to be a safe hunter. If you have a hunters ed card you could tell them that you have completed the course. I also would keep in contact with them and at the end of the season let them have some meat or somthing. I raise bees and would give 4-6 qts of honey. This sure did not hurt things. Helping with projects also is a + for the next year.
Well good luck.
Rick

I've only been denied once and ive asked 7 diff. places. here how i did it. first when they open the door you introduce yourself and ask if theyre haveing a good day(if they say yes say something like well thats great but if they say no say something like oh im sorry to here that) next you ask if they would allow you to hunt there land. the one time i've ben denied was because the old man said i was too young to be going around bothering people(i think there was something wrong with him) well good luck on getting permission.

All the people that I hunt on, know me. They know that if they let me hunt, then I'll be happy to help them out whenever they ask. The most important thing is to be nice, be real, most of the people you'll run into are gonna be farmers, and your better off just being nice, and talking to them like a real person, rather than being real formal. Let them know you'll keep an eye on they're ground for them, and take good care of it.
