Mule Kicking Bucks??
I've shot a lot of deer in my life. But I can never remember a buck, or doe for that matter doing the famous "Mule Kick" like I have been seeing on TV today.
Do the deer you shoot mule kick? Or do they train the ones on TV to do that?:DJust curious. Mine just seem to crouch and take off. |

RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
I've had them do it. Usually the result of a good heart/lung shot.

RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
I have had a few mule kick, Some jump then look as if to see what stung them and then fall over, had one that did not know an arrow had just went through him till blood started pouring out the low hole in his side then staggered a short ways and just laid down and died, but the majority of them have died on their feet running as hard as they could!

RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
Once with a bow - and several times with a gun. The bow show was a 5 yd double lung shot - blow through.
With a gun - once I had one "Mule kick" into a head 1st summersault - it never got back up. I shot my 1st elk last fall at 45 yds - and it mule kicked into a headstand - just kind of "hung there" a second - then crumpled......dead. FH |

I had a doe do it this year for the first time, and I've killed about 30 with a bow. I've never had one do it with a gunshot.

Almost every deer I have shot has done a mule kick, especially during rifle season :)

RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
All of the deer that I've shot never "mule kicked". They just ran a shortdistance and died.
|
RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
I've had several bucks I've shot give a good kick and all of those were shot right through the heart.
|
RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
Liver shots they will " Mule kick" heart shots they jump straight up with all 4s. gut shots they normally just crouch up and ease off. Spine shots....well, they don't jump at all.

Thanks Team Va for the input.

RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
I have never had a deer do it with a gun or bow even when shot in the heart, but I am sure they do it sometimes. Usually they tear out of there on a sprint, or if it is a 'perfect' (to me)shot they trot/walk a little ways and then fall over.

None that I remember with a bow. A few with the gun.

I've had a few deer do it as well. It happens more then we all think. When they have this stuff on video and slow it down, its easier to see this stuff.

RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
The buck I shot this year did the famous mule kick! Then ran 50 yards stood there for 30 seconds and tried to run sideways did a flip and he was dead!
|
RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
I've had 'em go down in 0 yds.....all the way out to an overnight recovery.....and I've never had one mule kick. I've spine shot 'em. I've liver shot 'em. I've double-lunged 'em and I've heart shot 'em.
Never had one mule kick. |
RE: Mule Kicking Bucks??
I have had both instances. My Uncle shot a buck this year that did that, no blood, no nothing, it was a miss. I missed a doe a few years ago like that. Both of these are with a gun. I believe they do it when we shoot just under them, as well as a good, solid hit.
