Does your state allow???
tBaiting. We can't even mention that here in VA. Why do some states see it as ok and others not?? Is it mostly northern states that allow it??
|
RE: Does your state allow???
NO! Thank God.
I think it is really more prevalent in the south. |
RE: Does your state allow???
Really?? I don't want to star an ethics war on here.. I was just wondering why some states allow and others don't, what the rational for both??
|
RE: Does your state allow???
NC allows it for deer.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
In WI, the lower half of the state you can't bait because of CDW but the upper half you can but there is restrictions on how much you can put out.
You can only have 2 gallons out per 40 acres. You are allowed multiple baiting sites but it cannot total over 2 gallons for the 40 acres. I only bait during late season when there is snow. |
RE: Does your state allow???
You can in Oklahoma, it is a common practice, and it is not looked down upon.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
Mich Yes You can have a 1/2 of a 5gal bucket on the ground. Anymore and you will get a ticket.Have herd of people being busted from the air with truck loads on the ground. Im not a fan but it is good for first timers and kids.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
ok, I guess the weather plays a part in some places that allow it.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
In NJ you can. I hear that that's going to change soon though for fears of CWD. I've baited, and I feel that it's more of a hinderance than an advantage. It seemed to just sit during the day and get hammered at night. I stopped baiting altogether.

RE: Does your state allow???
You can bait in VA it just has to be up 30 days before season opens and you can't hunt over any active sites such as mineral licks.
From VDGIF: • Chase with dogs or hunt with dogs or to attempt to chase or hunt with dogs any wild animal from a baited site or to train dogs on any wild animal from a baited site. Furthermore, it shall be unlawful to place, distribute or maintain bait or salt for any wild animal for the purpose of chasing with dogs, hunting with dogs or the training of dogs. Bait shall mean any food, grain, or other consumable substance that could serve as a lure or attractant; however, crops grown for normal or accepted agriculture or wildlife management purposes shall not be considered as bait. A baited site will be considered to be baited for 30 days following the complete removal of all such bait or salt.Unlawful to Feed Deer September 1, 2007 – January 5, 2008: It is unlawful for any person to place or distribute food, salt, minerals or similar substances, to feed or attract deer from September 1 through the first Saturday in January, both dates inclusive. Nor, upon written notification by Department personnel, shall any person continue to place or distribute any food, salt, mineral or similar substances for any purpose if the placement of these materials results in the attraction of and/or feeding of deer. No part of this regulation shall be construed to restrict bona fide agronomic plantings (including wildlife food plots) or distribution of food to livestock. |

RE: Does your state allow???
Quite simply.....NC allows it because we have too many deer.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
All has to do with population density.

ORIGINAL: bawanajim NO! Thank God. I think it is really more prevalent in the south. Guys will put out PB Pumkins Corn Beats Pie Snickers Anything they think will bring a deer in. I have seen bait piles that could feed a village in Africa:D What I am amazed at is how some are against it when deer hunting, but when it comes to bear hunting it is "Accepted" practice. I can tell you, it's way harder to shoot a deer over bait pile, then on a trail. Just what I think, but a old doe coming to bait pile, looks like a 8 year old a Micheal Jackson Party, it's targeted and knows it;) |

I know I just find it funny. I accept both pratices. Yes I have killed a deer over a bait pile. She was eating an apple as I recall;)

That was many years ago and that's how my grandpa used to do it when I was younger......so I followed. I guess that's why Germ says what he does about the youth in Michigan. Times have changed and I know a thing or two about deer now. |

RE: Does your state allow???
NYS dont allow it because of the fear of a CWD outbreak, old timers say that is used to be legal, but not that i can recall.

RE: Does your state allow???
How many people have really shot a big buck off a bait pile anyways? I dont think i have ever heard of anyone doing it. Yo uknow why? Because the bucks arent interested in food during most of the hunting season. They are after that split tail. I use to hunt off a bait pile when i was younger. But like it was said its more of a hastle than anything. Yea i have seen deer come in and eat the bait. But most of the time they come in at night to eat it. Its kind of a waste of money. I dont use bait anymore but i dont see the big deal with using it. So what if you take a deer off of bait. Its part of the game in bagging one. If you say bait is wrong then how is using a call any different? Or puting false scraps out? Theres no difference.

I have nothing against it.....and if I thought I needed to do this to aid in my doe mgmt.....I'd bait 'em up in a minute. I've found it EASIER to kill deer when I don't employ the practice, though. |

RE: Does your state allow???
Baiting is legal and practically standard operating procedure on private land here in Texas. It's illegal on most public land though.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
They made it legal here in Ohio somewhere around 12-15 years ago (I think). I don't think it has made one bit of difference to the # of deer killed or anything.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
I live in...take a guess...and it is legal here and I do bait at some of my spots, not all though. I shot a descent buck last year over an empty bait spot.....does that count? Actually, Ishot a piebald yesterday evening 2 yards from a corn pile....glad I had it out or maybe I would have never seen him.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
I would have no interest in sitting over a bait pile.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
Louisiana allows us to Plant food plots and bait with corn and rice bran and soy beans and all sorts of things. Then on top of that our rifle season goes from the end of Oct. till the first weekend of January, and our bow season in my part of the state goes from Sept. 15 to Jan 15. Also we can kill 6 deer, 3 does and 3 bucks no matter what size they are aslong as they have horns.
|
RE: Does your state allow???
I feel like aggressive baiting often turns deer nocturnal. I have seen more deer in the last couple years when we haven't used corn, apples, rye, wheat, beans, etc.in feeders where we hunt. I'll still put a few mineral blocksout and maybe a pile of corn on the ground in August or September, but deer know unknown food source = HUNTER

RE: Does your state allow???
I don't see a problem with corning roads for hogs but hunting over bait for deer or bear doesn't seem as fun. I'm not saying I wouldn't do it if it was legal but not a prefered method. ( The hog method just brings them into the road and then you stalk them, which doesn't seem as pedestrian ) I think my biggest problem with it is spreading of CWD and it being a waste of good food if overdone. From what I hear the best method is to have it on a timer and only release enough for a few deer so that the bucks, if they want the food, can't wait until dark to eat because it will be gone by then. I can see using hay in Canada and other sparse population/extreme weather areas. Any baiting has to be done with overall herd health in mind (ie spread of disease).

RE: Does your state allow???
My observations on bait so far. This is the first year that I have had a private spot where it seemed worth giving corn a try. Preseason and earlyseason it seemed to attract does and fawns regularly. I have been using trail cameras to see what is going on. I had three feeders out, one feeder deer stopped going by the 2nd day of bow seasonfor some unknown reason.I took it away, the spot has gone cold even 2 months later. The second spot gets mostly does and fawns regularly. Some very small bucks visit the area on occasion but don't seem to go to the feeder. I have caught one shooter buck on the camera once but not at the feeder. The third feeder is about a quarter mile away up the power line and seems to get the same deer as the second feeder. I also keep a nice pile going right in the center of the property in a thick wooded area. Here I have some regular pictures of the same small bucks feeding mostly at night. I amusing these feeders to keep deer on the property and hold them over for years to come. I will be adding a nice food plot for next year. We have taken a few does on the property but no shooter bucks. Does the corn help? To some extent I suppose, but this is sure no bucks of Tecamote.

RE: Does your state allow???
