I try to shoot only mature deer, but a 3.5 yr old deer is mature around here. If a nice two and a half comes by then i will most likely take him. I do like to take does for meat though

Where I hunt I don't see any choice but to be an opportunist..........sure you hope to see a nice one come out but you must also be realistic about your goals. I worked ultra hard and had more then my share of good fortune this season in NY...........I couldn't be happier with the way it went but I am also experienced enough around here to know not to set unrealistic goals.
Atlas and I come from the same general area and I relate to his post...... now if I came into money and was able to purchase a good chunk of land, I would love to play around with BBM (aka. QDM).... filling the freezer is job 1 with me ..... - 6 month olds

A little word of advice for you people who say you 'cant" really hunt mature deer cause theres very few around need to try something else. Even on public land, which is what I hunt in Va., has more than you think. WV Hunter is right alot of people around here consider a 110" buck a stud. I see your from WV/Va line which is about where I hunt (Bland and Tazewell county) and I see at least a couple of studs each year, that would go above 130", and get trail cam pics of several more. There here you just have to work for them. They dont get big by being dumb around here. Its a 2 and half hour walk to where I hunt and almost 4 miles in. I pretty much have it to my self except for the occasional buddy that goes with me. I see several small bucks and I know that if I let them walk they will survive so its kinda of my "own" land even though its public.
Nate...great job, that is doing what it takes. I agree with you....if you are willing to go and do that, you can reach some wilderness like areas. I knew a guy a long while back that did the same thing and had tremendous success as well, but with a gun. The problem with the average guys hunting land...they don't have that option. If I went 4 miles, I'd be in another state! LOL [8D]400yds is more like it where I am.
I completely agree with what you are saying though, change tactics if they aren't where you are. I'm sure there are more around than I think...but they certainly don't show themselves very often. I did a searchin the P&Y book2 years ago and there were 5 total entries in my county EVER! Now I know there are more that have been taken, but that is pretty pathetic.(btw, I am a long ways north of you...up near the top of Va. 3-4hrs north probably).

Interesting you posted this....I was actually looking at some National Forest land in my area 2 days ago...thinking I really need to explore it one of these days!
