So I'm Crotchetty TODAY......

I just got through flaming Tammy or Bambi or whatever her name was on another thread. It might be some residual from my hunt this morning. I'm perched high atop this ridge looking down the hill. I see about 20 deer traversing the ridge 125 yards down the hill. I'm watching them with the binos and they're wired. They are staring up the hill at a point probably 100 yards to my right. I can see nothing in over there against the snow. I can see a small buck or two in the crowd. They finally turn down the hill and go out of sight. About 10 minutes later I see more movement coming up the hill. It's a button. He comes right up to my level about 60 yards to my right front. I'm on a big double tree about 20 feet up.

He wanders around,,, I see another coming...3 point. They come up and feed away from me. Just about the time they disappear they come back into view. Then I see several more coming up the hill. IN all there are 5 bucks and 2 does. They are wired something awful. They take a step, jump, look and stare forever. Finally the button turns and come right at me... stopping at 10 yards. He passes by and gets a little wiff of me I figure because he's straight downwind now. And he gets MORE WIRED. Then he spots the blob in the tree and starts a stare down. He comes closer for a look. OK, he's 7 or 8 yards. Then all the bucks decide it's time to follow. They all come head on. One is a nice 8 point that I decide I'm going to shoot. Of course he's last. I end up with 7 deer spread around me from my right to my left front....all at less than 20 yards. For what seemed like at least 15 minutes they take a step, stop, sniff, step, sniff, etc etc. For the next 15 minutes at any given time there are at least 2 sets and sometimes 3 sets of eyes burning holes in me. When they're not they're playing the bobble head game. I'm comfortable with the bow in my holster, leaning against the tree so no problem. I'll wait them out.

Finally there's only one looking, then they get nervous, please turn your heads I'm praying. One 3 point and a 4 point start to turn and leave. They get 25 yards out and stop and look back. One by one they take turns watching me and guarding me while the others ease further away. So I go from having 5 bucks within 20 yards to only having a button and a 4 point at 7 or 8. The 8 point is behind a tree at 20. I glance down, the button has looked away. The 4 point turns, the two bucks watching me from 25 turn to leave. It looks good. I raise the bow just in time for the button to catch the movement as he looks back. He bolts and they all bolt a couple hops. The 8 point freezes(half behind a tree at 25). I have a 4 point dead to rights at 10 yards. 2 bucks are at 30 glaring at me. CRAPOOLA. The rest are blocked by trees. The 8 turns and walks straight away. The 4 point close up bolts after him and passes him. Finally I said to heck with it, find a hole. I found a hole, a 4 point walks in it at what I called a long 30 between two trees. I have to squeeze the arrow through a 5 inch crack at 20 yards. It sails perfectly through and slides right under his belly. 38 yards.<img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle>

So, I passed up a couple slam dunks trying to get a whack at the 8. Then I took a long shot and missed. Of course I'm crotchetty. My THUNDERHEAD buried in an oak past the end of the arrow. I unscrew it and leave a calling card buried at ground level in an oak. Of course I'm crotchetty. I don't want to talk about it.
