"Cost" of a new bow????
When factoring in the cost of a new bow.....and deciding which one to purchase....do you factor in the RESALE VALUE of the bows in question?
Let's say (for the sake of this hypothetical) that you pay $500 for a Bear Element......and the Allegiance would cost you an additional $200. Wouldn't you recoup your initial extra investment when you went to sell the Ally? In the end.....what did they both "cost" you?? Remember, too....that you had the use of these bows for the time in question, too. Which one would you rather be hunting with? |
RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I do not factor resale, as I tend to keep them longer than would allow for a reasonable resale value.

RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
jeff Bows are long term investments, I still have my MQ1 from 1997 for god's sake:D
I see your point, but no matter what i think you end up losing IMO. Plus a guy looking to save some $ to buy a bow is not going to resale in a year or two. |
RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I see your point, but I think....Proportionately speaking, it's the same. Yes, the Bear may have a lower resale value, but it had a lower monitary value from the beginning. Putting it in terms of ratio's, I believe it to be the same.
But, fortunately in my particular case, I just trade even up every year...:D |
RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I agree with Rybo hunter. I am looking for a new bow (with a very reasonable price tag), but I am replacing a 20+ year old bow, so I would not take resale into account.
|
RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I don't factor in resale value when buying a new bow. I look at buying a new bow as just an expense because honestly I have never sold one of my old bows. I have given a couple away to friends wanting to get into bow hunting and have successfully converted two:D. But if I were to sell a bow then I would factor in the resale value somewhat. I am still going to go with the one I want but as you know you can get more money for an Ally than you can a PSE Nova.

Jeff Plus being LH, really bones me[:@]

RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
Have you seen the resale on LH bows on Ebay?????
I "Think" you'd be surprised;) |
RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
Ebay turn its back on Gun owners, sorry do not even log on anymore. For what i paid for my Bow, losing 30% right of the bat is not worth it to me.
If I see a LH kid who needs a bow I give them the bow. Where do you think my Bowtech went;) |
RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I'm guessing I'm the minority here, but I heavily factor in resale value when it comes to a hunting bow. I like a new hunting bow every year, not because I think something new will give me an advantage but because I like new toys and simply enjoy changing things up. Resale value compared to my initial cost is a large consideration for me personally, because honestly there is very little else out there in terms of features that seperates the top end hunting bows in a hunting situation.Every one of the bows out there by any of the top brand names will get it done every time when it comes to putting an arrow in a grapefruit size spot under hunting conditions.
Now for a competition bow resale value doesn't matter to me much. If I like the bow, I'm likely to keep it and NOT change things up. There are many other things that fall MUCH higher on the priority list of "must haves" on a competition bow that I need to have at just about any expense. The competition bow I'm using now is a 2005 model and honestly I don't see myself getting rid of it anytime soon. Depending on the results of a few others I plan to test drive this year it may not be my #1 selection for certain types of competition but I will not get rid of it.......it simply shoots too good and I have 100% confidence in it when it comes to hitting dime sized X's. |
RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I don't think I'll ever buy a NEW bow again, that's for sure. For me, the best bet for your money is to buy a quality used bow, especially if it's not a Hoyt, Bowtech, or Mathews.
For example, I picked up a 06 Pearson Stealth, shot less than 50 times, for about $300. This bow was basically brand new. It's a parallel limb, hybrid cam bow with pivoting limb pockets, a 316 IBO and a 7.5" Brace Height. It's very quiet, shock free, and fast. It shoots very much like the Hoyt Vectrix XL that I shot. That bow retails for $769 and I got it for less than half that. I plan on shooting it for at least 4 or 5 years so resale value isn't important to me. It's just like buying a car. The worst investment you can make is a NEW car, unless you are going to drive it until it dies. |
RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
Don't you make new cars:D

RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I have learned that if it isnt a yop brand bow you cant hardly give it away. I just sold a 02' Alpine Impact Extreme for $125 completely set up. Had it in a bow shop for over 2 years. My 03' Outback went in 2 days, the Ol' Ladys Q2 went in a week and the kids Parker is still for sale.

RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I pretty much only buy used bows. Most of the time, I can sell for what I bought for or sometimes even more. One of the last new bows I bought (ordered in 2001) has appreciated in value.

RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I've sold quite a few bows on ebay and have watched alot of them. You almost certainly will lose 200.00 a year selling your 1 year old bow. A 2 year old bow loses quite a bit more value. Hoyt and Mathews resale values are the best, atleast on ebay. Bowtech does OK too, but other brands aren't doing that well.

RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I don't factor in anything. If I think I need it or I want it, I buy it.

RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I bought A PSE X force this summer brand new. I paid 750$ for it bare, nothing on it. After all was said and done for arrows, new release, sights, rest, stablizer, peep, kisser, and broadheads I walked out of the shop with a hole in my pocket, 1,250$!!!!!!!!!! ouch!!!!!!!! However, it was the first newbow I bought in over 5yrs. I wanted it, and Ilove it, and I will sell it in a few years, but I don't about resale, It has already paid for it self with the memories from this season.

RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
I would agree with you to some extent, however there are certain brands that you definitely will not lose $200 on. Maybe $200 under the MSRP, but not $200 under a normal selling price when bought new. _____________________________ I'm basing my post on MY experience with ebay and selling used bows. Theres an exception here and there for sure. Mathews sometimes sell for more than retail. Mostly in areas that lack alot of bowshops,in themountains and real rural areas mostly. |

I really don't worry about resale. I don 't sell them for a long time usually. I like to get what I like regardless of resale.

RE: "Cost" of a new bow????
Bow values are terrible. They are almost as bad as computers or cars. My last bow ('01 Patriot) I bought on ebay, new in box, with full accessories (pretty good, new in box as well)as a package deal from a dealer clearing out inventory. $410 shipped, one year old -brand new. I gotover $200 worth of accessories alone. No way I am ever buying a new (from a dealer) again. It's just not worth it to me. I'd rather spend that $ on something else.
The way some people buy and change equipment, you could be owning or leasing your own hunting land with that same $, or at least paying for a great hunt each year. But to each his own. Bottom line, bows don't change enough for me to buythem that often. I'll probably keep this one another 5yrs I bet. It's a nice bow, that many folks paid a pile of $ for in '01 and it was the greatest thing since sliced bread at that time. Its interesting to see the comments each year about the new hotitems. It's the same comments as the year before, but about a differentset of bows. |
